OT: Electric vehicles

It was laughed out of the room when he signed it as impossible to achieve. He needed to raise the company’s value from $50 billion to $650 billion, amongst other measures. He was mocked at the time for signing such a deal.
Ah, ok. I see now.

When two worlds of idiots collide...

There’s so many of these stupid Apple videos out there right now. The majority, like this, are fake.

Update 10:17 AM EST: When contacted by Gizmodo, Dante Lentini confirmed that the video was a “skit” that he made with friends and that he wasn’t arrested.

EV industry is in trouble and if it doesn’t rebound soon I’m not sure what’s going to save it short of gov’t intervention or a massive infrastructure investment. Volvo just said F-U to Polestar. Rivian is sucking wind. Tesla sales are looking almost ordinary. Lucid is toast. Audi and BMW are basically giving away EVs for less than Hybrid models. Ford is cutting back on Lightning. The list goes on. Total sh!t-show yet people want to pretend like there is an actual market shift from ICE to EVs.

Do you have any sources for any of your assertions? Rivian significantly cut it's yoy loss per vehicle. And there's this:

Volvo's parent company is taking control of Polestar. And Ford is giving EV owners free adapters to charge at Tesla supercharger, hardly an indication of problems for Ford. The EV market continues to grow, according to article linked below.

This doesn’t happen if things are good at Polestar…

Rivian sales went down from Q3 to Q4 signaling a demand issue because production was actually way up YOY. I happen to like Rivian trucks but the more I think about it there is a fundamental problem - outdoor enthusiasts don’t want to spend a week camping up in the Adirondacks worrying about their battery charge. Even fishing for a day or two out in PA presents challenges because there are no chargers next to a nature trail. So, basically, Rivian is a luxury street SUV that pretends to be outdoorsy. And that also means Rivian is competing against established luxury SUVs like the BMW X5.

Whenever an auto manufacturer gives ANYTHING away for free that’s not a good sign…not to mention the production cuts.

Rivian is supposed to be a great off road SUV. It’s not a street SUV.

Just admit it. You hate EVs. That's OK too. Some of your predictions and negative views may turn out to be correct. EV is a nascent industry. Along the way there will be winners and losers. There is a large number of car companies, brands and styles that went out of business, particularly in the early years. This is part of the natural evolution of a new product and technology.

As for Ford and the charging adapters, this is a smart business move. Over on the Lightning forums, people are quite excited by the move and the wider access to a reliable charging network. To see that as a negative is an odd take. Your emphasis on the word anything speaks volumes. You are prone to hyperbole on ANYTHING EV.

I’m sure it’s great off-road but how many charging stations exist where people go off-roading? If I’m going camping/fishing this weekend in the Poconos where am I charging my Rivian? Don’t get me wrong I love the Rivian but I’m starting to think there are some serious practicality/utilitarian issues.

Most likely answer is you wouldn’t need to charge. But if you did, you’d probably be back in NJ by the time you did with ample options. If you were really hard up and absolutely needed an asap charge, you’d go to the Rivian slow charger in Lake Harmony or one of the fast chargers in Stroudsberg.

Rivian is supposed to be getting access to the Tesla network soon, that would be a huge pickup for them. Plenty of charging options along 80.

Not really. I see Rivians regularly at trailheads and ski resorts. Actually surprised by how many have popped up.

Their vehicles have plenty of range for average trips. Maybe not ready to overland backcountry AK just yet but think they can handle a fishing trip.

320 miles to 400 miles of range seems sufficient for most camping trips. Most of the way is on hwys. It’s not like you are driving 100 miles into the woods.

The problem is the industry went from 1 or 2 players to 20 something in a 3 year span. Production growth, as well as sales was WAY up. Will some of those players go under or get out of the space? Probably, but there isn't much right now to suggest the industry is in trouble. Got ahead of itself? Needed a breather after that monster growth spurt? Sure, but flat, at this point, is not very concerning.

Toyota just announced a new $1.3B battery facility in Kentucky. I found that to be very interesting news.

I don’t know enough about battery technology or Toyota’s strategy but I’d be willing to bet they are an EV winner when all is said and done.

Ya, largest car company in the world, well run, was and is at the forefront of hybrid vehicles.

I found it interesting they were fairly late to the EV game. Find it interesting they are building out their EV growth strategy while so many are pulling back.

They are desperate. No one wants to drive those crap machines.

That's ok, Toyota doesn't know much about their future strategy either, or they're just flat out lying. Hydrogen, ICE, hybrids, EVs, solid state batteries.... Take your pick. There's a recycled press release about their latest "strategy" every few months. Toyota is pushing the anti-EV propaganda very hard in Japan; even to children. Their real strategy is to hope auto tech remains stagnant so they can just continue to do what they're good at without having to change course.
Based on your track record of predicting the future EV space, you just signed Toyota's execution warrant.

They are in the game.

Great company, I wouldn't bet against them.
