OT: Electric vehicles

I don’t know enough about battery technology or Toyota’s strategy but I’d be willing to bet they are an EV winner when all is said and done.
Toyota does have a way of selling lots and lots of cars. Might take them a little while to get going w/EVs, but I would never bet against them in the long run.

And people think using AI for self-driving cars is a good idea?

Do you blame the AI? If the LLM was simply fed the data from these boards, you could see why they’d want to push the button more often than not.

True. This is what makes AI so dangerous. Humanity is a ticking time bomb of mass insanity.

I love people, individually. But when we start forming groups, it seems the larger the group, the more hateful we become. As a species, we totally suck. 🙂

Interesting concept at the very least. Curious how profitable such an endeavor would be in order for them to catch on.

This type of thing could be a way to convert existing car dealerships into destination spots to keep customers engaged. I think Porsche is taking this type of approach.

If he sold X, then TSLA stock would skyrocket.

If he sold X, then Twitter would skyrocket.

I think both Twitter and Tesla might do better without Musk than with him. He seems like he’s better at program building than game-day coaching. 🙂

Although perhaps a Jobsian situation where he’s forced to leave for a while, then comes back (to Tesla) might work. A large dose of humility is something most can benefit from, Musk more than many.

Picking up some DD this morning and saw 2 brand new R1S on the road. I still think it will be their best seller. Price is the only deterrent. I would trade my lighting in for one if it had a 240v outlet.

The problem is that even if he sold X, he can't undo all the dumb stuff he's said and done on X. That's as much a problem for Tesla as it is his ownership in X IMO.

We have a family friend who has been all in EVs and all in on Tesla. Had a Model 3, then a Model S, dumped that for a Y for his family. He was set to grab another Model 3 for their second car replacing his ICE auto. He ended up getting a Hyundai Ioniq 6 instead because of how unhinged Musk seems to have become (or more likely he was always like this but his platform on Twitter just made it more well known).

Lol. You must be joking. He's the reason many buy@!!

What particular things has he said that makes him unhinged? Not defending him, but I don't follow Musk closely enough to know. I see some stuff he posts and just skip past them, but some of his posts make some valid points.

Overpaying for twitter which had forever been unable to make money is a good start.

Pumping Doge coin was not a good look for a CEO of a trillionisj dollar company.

There’s other stuff too but it could def trigger some people.

Unhinged might be a strong term. But it might not.

Overpaying for Twitter does not make him "unhinged." In the words of "the Dude"--"That's just your opinion, man." But you said unhinged may be too strong.

I'm naive to what Doge coin even is, and I don't care, but will take your word for it there. I live a fairly simple life like a lot of people- I wake up, work all day, take care of things at home with my spouse, try to get some exercise in, go to bed, wake up, repeat 5 days per week. Weekends are filled with home chores, chopping, stacking firewood, doing something fun like mountain bike riding. No time for Doge coin, crytpocurrency stuff.

As far the other stuff, I'm aware he ruffles feathers with some of us political statements and views on social issues that triggers some people. Frankly, I don't give a crap about his politics. He's an interesting character who has done a decent job running several companies. I'm not going like him more or less because I agree or disagree with his politics or views on an contentious social issue. Why should I care?

As a case in this point, I stumbled upon a post from an apparently popular "influencer" on gym etiquette and being positive with others in the gym. He's a big bodybuilder. As of yesterday, I new nothing about this guy, but he has a lot of followers. I don't know anything about his politics, and I don't care to know. Anyway, he posted something under a post from RFK, Jr, who he apparently met at a Gold's Gym and took a picture with him, and posted it. They guy got ripped by a lot of people who apparently don't like RFK Jr. I certainly understand that RFK Jr. makes a lot of people's heads explode, and that is on them. I don't care. But to these people apparently came at Joey Swoll hard.

His post below is perfect and food for thought on how we treat and think about others who don't think the way we do. It used to not be this way, and maybe we should get back to the way we were and accept people who have different beliefs and thoughts than us. This is not meant as a lecture to you, just a point for those who hate Musk because of his purported politics or views. I don't care. If I ran into him, I'd extend my hand, tell him I think what he has done with Tesla and Space X are great, and that would be the end of it. I would not be afraid to post a picture with me and Musk. That in no way my endorsement of his politics and his views.

"A lot of people upset and even unfollowing me because of this. I don’t endorse RFK or anyone. I don’t know anything about the man outside of he’s a presidential candidate as well as he was a very kind person to me. I would have been kind and respectful to both Biden and Trump as well as done the same. I also would NEVER judge or treat someone different based off their politics or who they vote for. It’s none of my business. I am able to have different beliefs and disagree with someone and still be kind and respectful. I also don’t trust media, both right and left. There are way too many lies and agendas. I also want to run for office one day and I hope my message and hard work would be for ALL people, without defining people by what political party they vote for. No one should judge someone or treat them different simply based off who they vote for, or what “party” they belong to.

Do consider that part of the reason he overpaid for Twitter is because he thought it was cool to get it for "420" you know, like the marijuana. But this is a situation where he is just being rich and dumb moreso then unhinged.

He then tried to get out of the deal not long after.

Doge is just some garbage crypto. Literally created as a joke.

I don’t know Musk personally and I have no interest in him in general so don’t seek out Musk news. Given that, I don’t know enough to say if he, as a person, is unhinged. Or if he’s a good or bad person.

Some of his behavior is childish and self-destructive; Musk telling advertisers they can go F themselves on TV for example (doesn’t matter what his reason was). Nearly his entire approach to Twitter has been a weird mixture of childishness, dishonesty, arrogance and stupidity. Not a good look for him.

His approach to parenthood and marriage is extremely non-traditional, and gives the appearance of a certain thoughtlessness or lack of empathy. For example, how would you like to go through childhood with the name: X AE A-XII?

Mostly, I think Musk is lIke all of us: imperfect. His wealth amplifies some of the negative effects of his imperfections. If he was a responsible person he’d realize that and adjust his behavior accordingly.

I don’t know if he’s unhinged but he certainly has some growing up to do.

Will agree that his "alleged/more than alleged?" drug use for being in his position would be problematic. Wouldnot want to work for a person who openly uses drugs.

I don't care that much about smoking weed. Not much different then drinking. The mushrooms? that is pretty extreme.

But buying a company because "420" is something teenage pot head would do........if that pothead was also a billionaire.

I'm not even anti musk per se. Making TSLA what it is today, and maybe more impressively, Spacex, puts him in rarefied air, but a ton of stuff he has done lately, really since the huge stock run into 2021, makes me think he has been corrupted by his riches.

Another knock on Musk was TSLA's recent earning call, which a noted TSLA bull called a trainwreck.
So yeah, a bunch of stuff lately.
I paid no attention to him prior to this thread's inception. And still almost no attention to him until the twitter debacle. So can't really say if it's an entirely new thing. But it sure seems like something's going on with him in recent years.

The "incidents" are piling up or maybe the media's just paying a lot of attention to him. But usually, when the media hyper-focuses on a person, that person is reliably doing stuff that makes a spectacle of themselves, in one way or another.

He's given credibility to various conspiracies. He gave a platform to Alex Jones (not just restoring him to twitter but openly promoting him and having him on one of his X live chats). That interview with Jones was particularly galling because he allowed Jones to lie about a bunch of things without much pushback.

He got caught promoting some Pizzagate conspiracies, that he then quickly tried to delete but the damage was done. He posted conspiracies on the Allen TX shooter. He elevated a conspiracy that Jews hate white people and wanted to overrun the nation with minorities, some of the same stuff that radicalized the guy who shot up the synagogue in Pittsburgh. This particular event ended up with some big companies pulling ads from Twitter.

The question is, does he do this for more eyeballs on Twitter or he really thinks like this?

I'm not questioning whether any of these things happened. I'm questioning where this stuff came to light?

As I said above, I'm so engrossed in my work, family, exercise, leisure stuff, I barely have time to pay attention to such stuff, other than major world and national news events. While Musk has a lot of corporate power, I'm not sure of the significance of Twitter/X in the grand scheme of things. I get a lot of useful, but tightly filtered info from the platform. I block and mute people who are political, controversial, etc., which makes my experience pretty clean and focused.

Not sure what you mean by this but he is one of the richest men in the world, he runs one of the biggest companies in the world, and he is posting on his own social media platform on which he has a ton of followers.

Everything he does is in the spotlight, much of it by design.

Where it came to light? It was all over Twitter and pretty well reported. You can pull up stories on Reuters, CNN, etc. reporting on the various things Musk has done.

I guess I don't pay close attention, as I said I have a focused Twitter feed.

As I said above, I use Twitter for narrow and specific reasons, and I don't get caught up in drama. Reuters, CNN and other left-leaning news outlets seemed a bit triggered by his takeover of Twitter, and they came after him hard. I'm certainly aware of Alex Jones being a questionable character (understatement of the year), and letting him back on was not a good move. But, I have not heard or seen anything about him on X. Ignorance is bliss. None of this is any defense of Musk, I'm indifferent on him.

I believe you. And it will not change my use and enjoyment of X. Similarly, when a musician or actor makes political statements that to don't like or disagree with, that does not change or diminish my enjoyment of the work. I've spent more time learning about Musk in the last day in this thread than I have in the last 20 years.

Traditional media is in freefall. X is the closest thing we have to a free speech platform and it's popularity is skyrocketing. More and more people are waking up to the fact that our government, corporations, and mainstream media have become one giant conglomerate. Controlling the narrative is the objective, not truth. Anyone who disobeys is censored, marginalized, and labeled a "conspiracy theorist". I can tell you don't go into much depth with your research into Musk. Probably just read headlines. Your list above is absurd.

An Independent running for president? He's gaining popularity? That's unacceptable. Propaganda machines for the corporate oligarchs say he's a "conspiracy theorist", just like Musk.

Musk is all over the place and has a dark sense of humor. He's always been that way. Not for everyone.

But to call him a conspiracy theorist is a joke.

X is better than it used to be and I'm glad he bought it since traditional media and most of social media had been captured by the left and was nothing but anti-free speech propaganda.

Free speech and diversity of opinion is important for a healthy society.
