OT: Electric vehicles

Tesla can build ten new gigafactories but that doesn’t mean they will out-run the competition forever. The idea that Tesla’s growth will continue without any impact from competitors is just plain silly. Yes, Tesla will sell a bunch of EVs no doubt. But every time I see a Ford, Polestar, etc. EV on the road that is an EV customer that Tesla lost.

This interior is far superior to the Model S.

Who said Tesla has a permanent competitive edge? Tesla has an edge now, and probably for the next few years.

I see things differently. Every EV is one less polluting ICE vehicle on the road.

I'm quickly reminded why I stopped looking in on this thread for a while. The half-dozen EV and Tesla haters can never get enough shots in. Happy holidays to the grumpy grandpas on this thread. Out.

No Tesla hater here. Tesla realist perhaps. Great company but the cult following is so over the top that God forbid anyone doesn’t think the stock is going to $3000 tomorrow or the company won’t own the road and we are branded “haters”.

By the way, feel free to prove me wrong, but have you ever posted anything positive about any other EV manufacturer other than Tesla? I seem to recall you are a cog in the Tesla propaganda machine.

Damn Teslas can't even take a hit.

That would suck.

I was out driving a bit on a warm day last week. A dump truck was trying to pull out in front of me, from a quarry, loaded with what looked like stones or gravel or something. I was like nope, not happening and wouldn't let him out ahead of me.

I normally let people merge in and try to be a solid driving citizen that way. But there's no chance at all I'm riding up a one lane curvy road right behind an overloaded dump truck full of small rocks.

It's an interesting idea. I'd like it better if they'd provide free hookers and blow in the hub, though.
I know this was already posted elsewhere in relationship to you but I still can't believe this book for kids exists (and I didn't want anyone in this car-related thread to miss it)....

Watched a documentary on Prime this afternoon and came to the conclusion that I'm pro-hybrid. I just can't decide between a 918 or a P1.

Roadster price removed from site, likely price increase if it ever becomes a real product.

The photos show a yoke. I don’t recall seeing one in earlier photos, and the yoke turns the otherwise nice design into pure crap. No chance whatsoever I’d consider a car intended to be a performance super car with a yoke steering wheel, unless it was a track focused car with track appropriate steering ratio (which this road going car won’t have). So incredibly stupid.

This thread generally sucks and wish it could stay on track

Got an email from Ford today that F150 Lightning orders open at the beginning of 2022.
Me too. My power went out for 1.5 hr today. Can’t wait to have backup generator that I can drive to the train station.

not loving the part saying many people won’t get one.

300 miles (with the larger pack) is okay. For a pickup, that probably isn't being taken on long road trips (although maybe it will be, what do I know), 300 might be okay.

For me, I'm still waiting for an SUV with double that range.

Well that would suck.

Although delivering new cars with refurbished or slightly used parts might not be an unusual thing for auto-makers. Hard to know, in many cases, I would think.

In an EV, though, a potentially depleted battery in a new car should be discounted, IMO.

If the battery depletion is 12% or whatever, the car should be discounted 12%.

Car dealers are getting stupid now. I priced out special edition X5 and they wanted $20K over invoice. Yeah, “transitory” inflation my ass.

In this case, it is transitory. Supply is the issue. If manufacturers are raising MSRP, than I would consider that inflation.

I keep hearing about “supply” but the dealer has 61 X5s across their dealerships, although this particular one that I like is a limited edition model. But even a standard model is priced off the charts.

They can ask all they want. First rule of economics is "something is worth only as much as someone is willing to pay for it". Let those BMWs sit in inventory for a few months, the price will come down pretty quick.

Dealerships are paying for cars in inventory. One solid car buying trick is to identify a model and trim level and then search for the one that's been on all the dealer lots the longest. You'll get a better deal on that car.

If it’s limited, that’s a different story. My FIL wanted to buy a M3 convertible when M models were hard to come by (mid 2000). Dealer wanted a premium but he show them by buying a X5 at sticker so he can buy the M3 at sticker.

$20K over invoice for a limited edition X5 blew my mind. I get the impression that a lot of dealerships are playing the supply card so they can justify asking over invoice. But I agree with Bleem re: first rule of economics. You basically get a X3 today for the price of a X5 a year ago. Ouch…
