According to the SL Hobbs and Stringer are working on a new four year contract extension. Hobbs realizes her current contract is killed her in recruiting.

Not thrilled, but too focused on other things to really worry about it too much. But that program is the biggest financial drain we have, and rewarding both that and an extended period of barely-above-mediocre performance is the first thing I have to complain about vis-a-vis Hobbs.

Until there is public pressure to can her she will stay. If the ledger wrote an article about her salary and losing money and success passing her by, only then, would Hobbs have room to maneuver.

Otherwise all you would here is outrage that a scandalous Rutgers Athletics Department is firing a persecuted minority female HOF head coach with more success of any coach in recent memory.

I posted this on the w. hoops board a couple of weeks. I've had an about face on Stringer.

She is a HoF coach, winner (not as big as we'd like), well respected in her industry. If not for our financial situation, which is getting resolved, she'd be held up as something to aspire to.

She is engaged and wants to win. Hitting 3,000 at RU needs to happen.

Let's see ... First coach in NCAA history to lead three different women's programs to the NCAA Final Four (Rutgers twice -- 2000 and 2007). 3rd winning-est coach in women's basketball history. Member of Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and Basketball Hall of Fame. Rutgers often hires coaches without Div-1 head coaching credentials. You may not like the terms of her contract, but you can't say she isn't qualified and hasn't won more than her share of games. And one of the great parts of her program -- they don't duck anyone (2015-16 SOS was 13).

I think we have seen that RU handles the media much different now.

Can't question her credentials and she deserves a lot of respect for all she has accomplished. Can question her ability to adjust her style to the new generation and/or the talent she recruits. I more wonder if the game has passed her by. But I suppose she's earned the right to leave when she's ready to go.

It will be interesting to see the contact figures on the extension as she was likely too high before, but I am on board with this decision as long as it does not kill us financially. She is our most decorated coach at Rutgers by far, and we should want to have her linked to RU. In my opinion, the floor at the RAC should eventually be named after her as well.

I have no problem with this. It is what it is. We just replaced mens hoops and football, and are spending money on facitlities and other upgrades. No need to spend here right now. Just maintain status quo with the HOF coach.

Wouldn't a replacement coach actually be cheaper than Stringer? She does make a healthy salary.

No, no , no.......2 year contract at most with incentives. Come on already with the hemorrhaging of $$. Why a four year deal?

if the financials are favorable based on recent performance (with incentives to increase if she is more successful) than I am ok with this. However at some point soon we will need to replace CVS due to retirement or termination etc.

What top recruits is going to commit to coach with a 2 year contract, even if the coach is a WBB royalty/legend?

The uncertainties on CVS's contract dating back to Pernetti has been slowly bleeding our proud WBB program to death in recent years, like I said, it's about time someone gets it.

Can't deny any of that. Might as well bring Hank Iba back.

He put the coach above the program. Which should not happen. Especially when she has been on a downward spiral for several years. When were we last a top 20 team for most of the season????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong:

a) she just finished year 2 of a 4-year deal
b) recruiting began to slide more than 2 years ago

- So if A and B then how will another 4-year deal cure her recruiting issues?

They just need to advertise the program and games more. That's their problem.

Before some of you jump off the edge because you think the sky is falling, wait till you see the wording of that extension and not jump to the usual end of world scenario that is the favorite of many posters that look for reasons to be upset.

The extension CVS and Hermann signed was very RU friendly after the second year of that 4 year contract. Expect Hobbs to do the same while planning to have Vivian going for # 3000 be used as a major event that Rutgers will be getting positive publicity from the national press and great exposure for all of RU Athletics.
Rutgers shot itself in the foot to often when given a chance to get positive press and it looks like some in this thread are willing to load the bullets so RU loses another toe instead of being applauded for a major accomplishment

Hobbs has done a terrible job with football and men's basketball. Now he is screwing up women's basketball, too.

At least that is what the amateur athletic directors say. They want him fired so they can apply for the job. NOT.

I have no problem extending her as long as she isn't getting a raise. Her last few years have been subpar so her new contract should reflect that. Either make it incentive laden or she should take a pay cut. She is a HOF coach and has had some amazing years here. It would be nice to see her make another run before she goes, for a few years womens hoops was the only sport that was successful and that was due to her.

Because her current contract is really a series of one year contracts that allows RU to fire her without owing Her much. Hobbs also feels the new facilities will help her a lot.

Her name is too strong to fire, she can still coach and hopefully retires at the end of the new deal ( while grooming the next coach)

Facilities, fine, but a "series of 1-year deals" - which I'm well aware of - isn't the reason her recruiting has suffered. it's an excuse. Now if he signs here for another 4 years, at a rate which she has EARNED the past 4 - not a decade ago - then I'm all for it but we'll see if recruiting gets better, or not, I'm not sold that it will (but hope it does).

I get that the arguments both pro and con are very compelling, so I won't attempt to address them.

What I will say is that, in the morass of editorialization about "The Subsidy" and Rutgers athletics allegedly (but not really) soaking students and taxpayers, women's basketball is the darkest black hole, by a lot.
