OT: New York Mets 2022-2023 Off Season Thread

Mets should be past this Wilpon BS and get legit players.
Seriously need to stop with that mentality and stop acting like second rate bitches. Cohen is the owner now.

Re-sign DeGrom. Go get Judge AND Trea Turner AND Rodon. Take full advantage of this WS window.

there is a happy median in here somewhere. lol

The quick Diaz signing already shows how Cohen plays. I do think he throws big $$ at deGrom but not more than 3 years. I think we end up with either Nimmo or Turner on this team next year. But even signing Nimmo- he will make a serious run at someone similar to Turner.
I don't think he goes at Rodon unless deGrom leaves.

Hell, he may even throw a flier at Conforto but it would most likely be very short and less than the QO

My thoughts:
- deGrom: Gone (Bolts for 4 years at $45M AAV - our offer of 3 years at $45M is topped by Texas).
- Nimmo or Turner: I think one of them is on the team, but not both
- Rodon: Added

deGrom is going to be very interesting- will a team really give him 4/180? And if a team will, would it be a team like the Rangers who really suck. And does deGrom take it even with the extra year if it means he never sees the playoffs again?
But, if deGrom does leave- that is when I could see both Turner and Nimmo on the Met's. That is a lot of cash freeing up.

But I think you then need to go heavy on adding quality pitchers, so that's where I think only one of Turner/Nimmo is added.

I am not normally a pessimist, but I am getting a LITTLE troubled that the Mets have not yet formally announced the Diaz signing. The reports on Sunday were that the signing was pending results of physical exam. I do hope that this is not another Kumar Rocker situation.

If it is not announced by Friday I will be more than a little troubled. I mean, the whole point was to get this all wrapped up before the other 29 teams got a shot at him, no?

They've been announcing it all over social media through their official facebook page with trumpet pictures and everything

There are not a lot of quality starters that are any better than the pitchers the Met's had last year. I believe they do retain Carrasc and I hope they are able to sign Bassitt. That will at least give us Max/Bassitt/Carasco/Megill/Peterson - if Bassitt signs elsewhere- that is when I think they may go for Rodon.

There was a lag before they officially announced the option pickup of Vogey so same thing here most likely Probably just getting some of the smaller details ironed out. I'd imagine it's announced tomorrow or Thurs.

Our rotation with all the SPs we lost isn't going to look pretty unless they do major work there. Can't count on Megill one bit due to injury and performance and Peterson was better but I still wouldn't rely on him being anything more than a 5 at most.

Diaz is NOT listed on the Mets official 40 man roster at this time, same as all their other free agents.

On the website, there are third-party reports of the unofficial agreement, but nothing directly from the Mets.

Agreed

They posted it a couple nights ago, deleted it, and just actually reposted just a minute ago lol
Yes! There it is!

That means we're getting Judge and Turner and Rodon. And bringing back DeGrom. Bobby fn Axelrod
My thoughts:
  1. According to "sources" (take for what it's worth), Cohen has no desire to get into a bidding war with Hal S. for Judge. They genuinely like each other and want to maintain a good relationship. Reportedly, the only way Cohen will get in on Judge, is if the Yankees are out. Not Bobby Axelrod's style, but Steve Cohen is not Bobby Axelrod.
  2. Also reportedly, Cohen is not giving Eppler a blank check. Eppler will be expected to work within a budget. It will likely be the largest budget in MLB history, but it is not limitless.
  3. Will Turner leave the Dodgers for the Mets? Which one? Don't be surprised if it's Justin Turner, if the Dodgers decline their club option on him.
  4. But on the other hand... Cohen has frequently cited the Dodgers as his model. What is the Dodgers model, as implemented by Mark Walter? It is this: Overspend initially, until you have built a sustainable organization. Then when you have a steady flow of young inexpensive talent, you can reduce spending to a manageable level. So who knows.

We declined our mutual option on Givens.

We claimed Saucedo off waivers from Jays.
I had no idea who Saucedo was, and looked him up.

Tayler Saucedo is a 29 year old lefty reliever who had some success as a rookie in 2021. 2022 was pretty much a washout due to injury. But he does throw with his left hand. The Mets will be no doubt collecting those guys in the offseason, in hopes of keeping a couple of them.

Which reminds me we have John Curtiss who we signed fully knowing he'd be out all of 2022. Could play a role in pen next season.

The bassit signing will be interesting. A durable innings eater but not a big game pitcher at least based on the end of last season. Not sure he can be trusted in a big spot but he can certainly give you innings and protect your pen from April to August. How much is that worth to the Mets remains to be seen. I also don't know if he is interested in returning should the Mets want him.

Options are $3 million buyout and Carrasco becomes a FA or pickup the $14 million option.

As it stands today, I would exercise the option and keep him for another year.
Since 2014, he really has only had 2 bad years and one of them was 2021 coming back from injury.
$14 mil would actually be a great price for him. Plus, in reality, picking up his contract only costs 11 mil as you owe him 3 anyway

The Qualifying offer deadline is today as well at 5 PM. Players can sign with new teams at 5 also.

Mets will probably extend QO to deGrom, Nimmo, Bassitt, and Walker. Walker is not guaranteed though.

What would be Walker's QO?

My point was discussed earlier in this thread. I watch Corresco and don’t think he’s any good. But the stats state otherwise. So I think you resign him.

And to be honest- all the other guys that would be in this range- kind of suck and you have no idea if they could handle NY...

Compensation the Mets would receive if we QO those players and they sign elsewhere would be:

If the team that loses the player went over the luxury-tax threshold, the compensation pick will be placed after the fourth round has been completed (as with the previous scenario, it doesn't matter how much the player signs for).
Six clubs exceeded the threshold in 2022: Dodgers, Mets, Padres, Phillies, Red Sox and Yankees

The Mets would lose the following if we sign a player who rejected their QO.

A team that exceeded the luxury tax in the preceding season will lose its second- and fifth-highest selections in the following year's Draft, as well as $1 million from its international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. If such a team signs multiple qualifying-offer free agents, it will forfeit its third- and sixth-highest remaining picks as well.
Teams in this group this offseason: Dodgers, Mets, Padres, Phillies, Red Sox, Yankees

That would be WAY to much for him. He isn't going to get 19 mil as a FA.
I think he would reject the offer. He wants multiple years and don't think he would risk pitching on a 1 yr deal and getting hurt. If he did accept a 1 yr deal(albeit overpaid) when we're a little SP starved woulnd't be the worst thing. Would help bridge to 2024 when the minors can start to produce some more SP arms.

As I said though it's probably 50/50 whether the Mets FO extends.

damn- that can be a tough pill- sign a guy and lose a 3rd and 6th but lose a guy and only get a 4th or later.
