OT: New York Mets 2022-2023 Off Season Thread

Picked up the option on Carrasco.

Extended QO to deGrom, Nimmo, Bassitt. Walker did not get the QO.

Picked up club option on RP Curtiss also who I mentioned earlier this week.

Walker and his agent are likely very pleased with this development.

Maybe...he most likely gets something like 5/60 with a contract. maybe up to 70 mil...Instead of gambling on himself- take the almost 20 mil this year and then go bigger on a new contract.

But, it went pretty much as expected. Walker would not have been worth the QO-All the others will be getting more than the QO so the Met's knew they werent going to take it and hoped for 2 things- it may keep the price down a little as other teams may not want to sign a guy with a QO and lose a draft pick. Gives the Met's at least a slight advantage if they want to keep him.
If someone does sign them, they do at least get some sort of compensation.
Carasco was just a now brainer - it is a net 11 mil contract for a guy that has had a solid career and they know he can handle NY

Phase 1 of this Hot Stove Season comes to an end in less than two hours. For the Mets, it was a success with the signing of Diaz. We now move on to Phase 2 - let the games begin!

In addition to the opening of the Free Agent Bazaar, there are three key dates to keep an eye on this month:

November 15 - Deadline to set 40 man roster prior to Rule 5 Draft. - Mets are currently at 30 (all free agents have come off). They will need to add certain prospects, most notably Mauricio and Allan. Probably a few others. They will also of course need to reserve some space for the acquisitions they will inevitably make.

November 18 - Deadline to make tender offer to arbitration-eligible players. The big question mark here is Dom Smith. There are a couple of others.

November 20 - Deadline for free agents to accept QO - A non-issue for Mets as no one will accept. Walker might have, but he didn't get it.

Terrance Gore has been dropped from the Mets roster. Website says he was outrighted to Syracuse, so he must have cleared waivers.

Ronny Mauricio added to roster. Other additions will no doubt follow. Mets roster currently at 31.

And the Nats are paying Mad Max for the next 50 years or so.
And there are about 50 active deferred contracts being paid out.
I often wonder why baseball fans cannot understand the benefits of deferred payments.
This contract helps the Mets.
It was a joke. We know it’s for the CBT, competitive balance tax. We fans understand what the reasoning is for deferring payments.

The problem with Bonilla's contract was that the deferral was calculated using at 8% interest rate. While this financial obligation might have seemed unsustainable, the Wilpons were confident that it would be no problem. They had a guy...

Good to know!!!!!! I wasn't sure because there are way too many idiots that make it out like The Met's were complete idiots and the only club that would ever do something so stupid.

I often wonder how much the Wilpons knew about the scheme or if they were complete patsies

Mets reportedly in advanced negotiations with the Rays on a trade for pitching prior to tomorrow's 40 man roster deadline.

The Rays are the model of a small market organization. They have more young talent coming up than they can protect on the 40 man, and have to make room for it. Otherwise they could lose it in the Rule 5 draft. Mets are very interested in some of their expendable pitching

The cost, I assume, would be younger prospects that the Rays do not yet need to protect.

Thanks. Hope we’re not trading Kazmir for Zambrano again. 🤕

The only guy on their current team that would be trade for them would be Springs. Most their starters that had really good seasons look to still be under control.

I read on line the Mets were looking seriously at Carlos Rodon. As a lefty, he is something the Mets lacked at SP last season. If they sign him, I think it means the end of Jake's time here in NY. Rodon is younger by 6 years and will probably come cheaper than what Jake will be demanding. It will be interesting to see if the Mets move in that direction.

Rodon will come cheaper in terms of AAV, but not in terms of total contract value.

Baseball should have allowed the Rays to move into the now torn down Giants Stadium.
In 1957,the area supported three teams as is now the case for hockey.

Jake Mangum not protected and will be eligible to be taken in the Rule V.

That's a surprise. Mangum fits the profile of a player who would be taken in that draft. He is probably MLB ready, albeit with a perceived low ceiling. But then, Jeff McNeil was once perceived the same way.

On my news feed on my phone, it said deGrom is likely to accept the Braves' offer of 2 years for $90 million. The second year allows for deGrom to opt-out. That seems more team-friendly than a 3-year deal. I don't see why the Mets can't match this.

Also, another news feed has Nimmo going to San Fran along with Judge. Some in MLB believe that the Mets are moving too slowly to retain their guys and may rely on the youngster to fill the gaps next year. IMO, there seems to be a lot of hate directed at the Mets, hoping they fail.

I feel the same way, Cohen has been the villain in the eyes of the owners from before he even got the team. There has been a target on his back on all moves. We've seen this before in politics. 💩
