And so the off-season officially begins. May it be a good one…
Yep. Phase 1 of the off-season, which lasts for five days, officially begins at 9 AM. Key aspects:

1) Modified Free Agency begins - Teams can talk with free agents, but cannot formally negotiate terms. The original team retains exclusive signing rights for five days. There's a chance that the Mets may re-sign Diaz during this time period, but I think it's a longshot, although I do believe he will re-sign eventually.

2) All Options (Player, Club, and Mutual) must be exercised - Not too much drama here. We know deGrom will opt out, and we know that Bassitt and Walker will decline their options. The major question is whether the Mets exercise their option on Carrasco. My guess is yes. They also hold club-friendly options on Vogelbach and Curtiss, which I assume they will exercise. Givens, who has mutual option, is probably gone.

3) Make Qualifying Offers on their Free Agents -- Again, little drama. They will certainly offer the QO to deGrom, Nimmo, Diaz, and Bassitt. The only question mark is Walker. Who, not coincidentally, is the only one who might possibly accept it.

Other notes on the Diaz deal ( 5 years, $102MM)
  • Full no-trade clause
  • Opt-out clause (didn't say when)
  • Sixth year option (didn't say whose option)
EDIT: The opt-out is after three years. So Diaz is here through 2025. The sixth year option is a club option. If it is exercised, the deal becomes 6 years $122MM.

Seems like another overpay to retain Diaz. Where else was he getting such a contract in free agency? He was the priority amongst their free agents, but you still need to be smart about it given all the other open roster spots that need to be addressed.

Seeing a team who’s a$$ you thoroughly beat all year long make it to the world series looks to have Mr Cohen and team motivated from the jump this offseason

My thoughts:

1) Not that egregious an overpay. The benchmark was Chapman's 5 year $86M contract in 2017. Maybe that translates to 5 and 95 today.

2) But let's say it was an overpay. Remember, Diaz was five days away from free agency. Five freaking days. Free agency has value. Diaz gave that value up. He has to be compensated for it.

3) Where else was Diaz getting that contract? We will never know. More importantly, HE will never know - which is exactly what the Mets wanted.

4) As far as being smart about it, if you have an unlimited checkbook and are willing to use it, you don't have to be smart about anything. You can make all the frivolous purchases you want. Cohen has the checkbook. The degree that he is willing to use it remains to be seen.

I’d never give a reliever 5 yrs. then again, it ain’t my money so 👍👍👍
He was the key piece to this team on this off season - 5 years, I get it, but if he gives us 3 years of this level stuff- well worth it.

Diaz re sign was a must ! Glad it occurred prior to free agency as well ! Now lets bag degrom / nimmo / Walker etc.

Hmm, 2 awful seasons vs 1 great one. We see this with relievers all the time. Be careful.

Got a secret for you-He has played for 7 years
He has had 1 bad season. - 2019
He has had 1 average season -2021 if 3.45 and 32 saves is average. but we will give that to you
He has had a season that was 3.27 but he did have 34 saves. So- that would be a good season
He has had 3 seasons that were lights out. ERA between 1.31 - 1.96

If you guys had that over the time you had your 86 mil guy, you may have won a WS or two.

The way they talk, I thought they did. Hours after getting sweep and embarrassed, they were on here busting balls.

What about Turner in CF?

Nope, Yankees want him and will over pay just by having us in the hunt. I love this new ownership and how they can play Poker upping prices and taking suitors out of the picture of who they really want. Big George did it to the Mets for decades in between his suspensions of course. 😎

We had plenty of guys like that. Good seasons and bad seasons (and yes, 2021 was bad). Also, how will he pitch in the big spot? No idea yet.

Not a lot of Mo's out there. Even closer #2 didn't man up in the playoffs (Hoffman).

Be careful.

What is the Yankee argument for the team that will be surrounding him next year. Yes, Turner would be able to stay at SS but I would guess, if they make a 30 mil push for Turner, it would mean no Judge in that lineup.

Exactly.Raise the rent and see how many apartments the Yankees could afford, lol.

Who you kidding, you wanted him. Tell me your Holmes is who you want to go to war with over Diaz. You even posted he was a target you wanted, please already. LFGM
Actually, I posted about a stupid article I read that claimed the Yankees had four moves they needed to make.....resign Judge and sign Verlander, Correa, and Diaz. The whole article was absurd and devoid from reality. I thought everyone could easily figure out it was just so much nonsense. I forgot about you. You didn't see my upside down smiley face at the end of the post ?
In fact, over the weekend I read an article that maintained that the Yankees shouldn't spend big bucks on a reliever, as that was one area where they were in pretty good shape.
