OT: New York Mets 2022-2023 Off Season Thread

Here's a good Met trivia question about Justin Turner.

Justin Turner got his first Met hit in 2010, as a pinch-hitter. For whom was he pinch-hitting?

I promise you that the answer is relevant. If it were not, it wouldn't be a good trivia question, and it is!
Wild ass guess, without looking:
David Wright.

Had to look it up. Can't see how anyone would get this without cheating!
You could check the 2010 Met roster, and make an educated guess based on my promise that it was a good trivia question! And it is, amirite?

2 years, $15 million. Should have kept him for that….but I think he might start for the Padres.
Def a loss for us. Lugo when he is locked in is nasty and had the second best stuff of anyone in the bullpen.

OK let me slightly amend the trivia question. It should refer to Justin Turner's first Met at-bat (he drew a walk), not his first hit.

Turner's first Met at-bat came on July 16, 2010. Turner was hitting for a journeyman utility infielder nearing the end of his career. His name is Alex Cora - and he is now Justin Turner's manager!

Pretty cool, huh! (Well I think so, and that's all that matters.)

Mychal Givens to Orioles. $3MM for 2023, $6MM mutual option with a $2MM buyout if Orioles decline. In other words, $5MM guaranteed.

We opened up a 40 man spot for Narvaez by selling Yan Lopez contract to a Japanese team.

Eppler suggested some more moves to come this week during the PC for Verlander.

Ottavino back. 2 year $14.5 million deal with an opt out after first year.

Also hired Dom Chiti as the new bullpen coach.
Ottavino, Robertson, Diaz - can't hate it too much

Now, gets us a god hitting DH that can play some outfield and move McCann - and if that is done- I'm ready for the season

Added Raley as well. He'll be an important piece. Seems like they go after pen guys with the big sweeping horizontal break.

I think they'll stay put at DH with the older guys and rooks on the team already.

Need another outfielder, even if a Jankowski type.

My hunch is that with JD gone and relatively cheaply, the righty DH spot is for Alvarez to earn.

Mets need some OF depth so hopefully that translates to Conforto or Brantley or AJ Pollock or Will Myers types etc.
Brantley off the board. Re-signed with Astros.

Drury to Angels.

Holy 💩 if you can get a 135 healthy games , use Louie to play 3rd to give him off/DH. Day after night , DH before or after a team day off ect ect.

Cohen said he didn’t care if he made a penny on the Mets. Mets revenue is around 500 million and going up !

So- Nimmo, Marte, Lindor, Alonso, Correa, McNeil, Escobar, Canha, catcher
Or do Correa and Marte switch?

But that is an insane lineup and imagine if Alvarez come up and hits

When other fans complain
Wouldn’t you want your owner , boss, company spend all its profits on its employees ???

Rays revenue was 252 million
Rays payroll was 100 million
Team took all of its competitive balance money and put it right in their owners pocket

Will be interesting to see if the Correa contract includes opt-outs, and if so, when.

If Cohen was serious about following the Dodgers model, an opt-out might actually be desirable. However, it sure looks like he doesn't give a damn. He's got the FU money, and he's saying FU.

Not sure I like that the Mets have become the George S. Yankees on steroids. But my approval is not required.

Amazing! But they wouldnt sign kumar rocker.....

I wonder what this means for baty/vientos

They'll sign Ohtani next year for $500 million over 10 years.
The lines on some of their games this season may reach-500.

The Mets decision to pass on Rocker was solely a baseball decision, not financial. When they saw his meds, they decided they'd rather have the 2022 compensatory pick.

I don't think it means anything. They'll shift Baty to LF in AAA so he can get acclimated there. Vientos can still DH and play backup 1B to give Alonso a breather. C still open for Alvarez when he is ready as well. It means we don't have to rush them up to be an important bat in the lineup. They can come up when the FO determines they're ready.

Mayer said team still isn't done. They want to add another bullpen arm and bat. I'm guessing that's the 4th/5th OF. Escobar a bench bat now and one of the best unless they deal him.

From NY Post article:

"Cohen’s Mets are in record territory in terms of payroll and tax. His tax will come to close to $100M now after a bonanza of a winter in which the Mets added Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana, and David Robertson and brought back Brandon Nimmo and Edwin Diaz. But Cohen seems unfazed by the astounding outlay.

'What the heck’s the difference? If you’re going to make the move make the move,' Cohen said."

The AAV is the same as Nimmo's deal at 26.5. By the time it's halfway through, superstars will be making 40+ AAV.

This is Cohen's way to make up to Mets fans for doing Hal Steinbrenner a favor and leaving Judge alone.

No, Nimmo's AAV is $20.25MM.

All these winter moves and no top prospects were lost.Amazing post season and living on the back pages of every major newspaper in the country. Great time to be a Mets fan.
