OT: New York Mets 2022-2023 Off Season Thread

Given that the Mets have reached the cap level at which each additional salary dollar is almost completely matched by a penalty dollar, I wonder how the cap would apply if the Mets were to trade, say, McCann and eat some of his salary. Would McCann's entire entire salary come off the cap and along with it the almost dollar-for-dollar penalty? I have no idea but, if it does, it creates some interesting incentives.

My guess is that it would not. I say that because the Mets are "only" charged $20.25MM for Cano. Seattle is charged for the $3.75MM that they are responsible for.

Narveaz had real good year 2 years ago. He was awful last year and overweight.

Strange signing.

Have my concerns especially given his age and weight.

I would guess McCann is gone and team goes with lefty / right platoon with Narvaez and Nido.

Need a righty DH - like a JD Martinez or Drury - unless Alvarez will be the righty DH.

I’d be careful about Drury in a big park like citi

Nimmo contract is way better signing than Rodon. So glad Hal has to over spend because of Uncle Stevie.
Amazing how much a year makes. If both players were FA’s last year, Nimmo most likely gets something similar to Marte, maybe less(and Marte now looks like a steal)
And Rodon most likely gets no more that 3-4 years at much less.
I’m not going to bust on anyone for any single signing this year. Almost every player has injury concerns.
But, at least no one should still be busting Cohen’s balls over spending this year. He is no longer top spender.

Just looked at his stats, wow. Very mediocre. Kind of like the Mets version of Aaron Hicks.
You know how to read stats???

.269 .385 .441 .827
.231 .330 .387 .717

Hicks has batted over .269 how many seasons hmmmm still looking
Over .385 OBP how many seasons? Still looking
He did get over .441 slg 3 times in his 10 years
and 2 years of 10 over a .827 OPS

Nimmo is quite a bit over average in every one of these offensive stats.

It's the length of these contracts that stun me, crazy really.

The 3 Amigos will be invited to a math stats class during winter break. Clueless isn't the proper word to describe them.

I am still trying to figure out if the Mets are definitively better than last years edition. Do we know that Verlander, Senga and Quintana are better than DeGrom, Bassitt and Walker? Diaz and Nimmo are retains but human nature suggests neither will be as hungry as their contract year. The bullpen is TBD depending on how the guys they got from the Rays and Marlins turn out plus any other signings to come. Robertson should help but not a young guy. Is any of Baty, Vientos or Alvarez ready and or capable of providing an upgrade at least as a DH? I am sure some who get paid to make the assessments will have us 3rd in the East behind the Braves and Phils. They might be right.

all good questions. The good news, is that we should be at least as good. I would still like one more good BP arm and to either bring in a bat with a trade of Ruf/McCann...hell, to be honest, even just minor league bodies...and give the kids a shot, such as Baty/Alvarez as DH.
The key, will be staying healthy. We need Marte to be ready all year so we have to find a way to DH him at times which makes a good 4th outfielder very important. I do expect Escobar to be better too. His first 2/3 of a season was horrible. And we can't rely on Louis G playing so much.
But overall- I think there is a better chance of Verlander pitching all year then there was of deGrom. And if Carrasco is your 5th starter- that is actually a hell of a rotation.

This year, Phils actually worry me more than the Braves. Braves have a great team but it took one hell of a historic run to catch us this year.
Tough damn division

Trevor May to A's - 1 year, $7MM.

As things stand now, this would make May - a middle reliever - the A's highest paid player. Weird.

Mets sign Jose Peraza, a key member of the 2021 bench mob, to a minor league contract. Also veteran journeyman OF Abraham Almonte.

Also, Sean Reid-Foley, who had previously been non-tendered, was re-signed a minor league contract.

Simple Stupid, what's a successful Yankees season? That's all I'm asking and you can't provide an answer. Get back in the box moron. It's a ring or it's a failure, admit
I've provided the answer to everyone in the last years from the day sitting in the parking lot at the Army Navy game when I heard that Cashmen traded for Stanton. Look it up. You are stupid, lazy and irrelevant.
Back to what box?? My God you've lost it

I like much of the Met moves, including the minor league contracts to a bunch of experienced arms.
Still need a true 4th OF who can also DH. And we need to move McCann
Swanson off the Braves is huge.

JD Martinez to the Dodgers. Got to target Conforto now for sure
JD would have only made sense for us if we moved Ruf and Vogey. Curious if Brantley may be a better deal than Conforto- but if they did bring MC back- I would love it. I actually think his best years are ahead of him and he performs in NYC…

Only if Conforto gets rid of his agent.

Why? Scott Boras is the best in the world at what he does. You got something against good?
I would assume cuff meant Boras is not going to make a good deal anywhere.
But, a great MC season back with the Mets would be his best case..,

Senga signing officially announced. Five years, $75MM. Full no-trade. Player opt-out after three years. Presser scheduled Monday 11:00 AM. Verlander presser Tuesday 10:00 AM.

What I don't know is how the payments are staggered over the five years. If heavily front-loaded, Senga would clearly be incented to exercise the opt-out. Regardless of the actual payment schedule, for Luxury Tax purposes the payments are straight-lined, $15MM per year over the next five.

With the Senga signing, the Mets 40 man roster is now maxed out at 40. So when the Narvaez signing is announced, and for any subsequent signings, someone will have to go.

'Zat you, Darin Ruf?

My hunch is that with JD gone and relatively cheaply, the righty DH spot is for Alvarez to earn.

Mets need some OF depth so hopefully that translates to Conforto or Brantley or AJ Pollock or Will Myers types etc.

Must read:

This article has to scare the $hit out of baseball in general. Fork them, the Mets have operated on a Walmart budget far too long. It's been a long time coming but finally we're playing in the deep end of the pool.

I would love to have Conforto back in uniform but now having had the other shoulder operated on also scares me. Years ago when he dislocated his left shoulder on a check swing was gruesome to watch and now the throwing shoulder, tough. When he plays if both Nimmo and Conforto are out there, that's 2 average arms at best defensively. With all that said, on a 2 year contract, he's worth bringing back. He's been nothing but a class act to the organization, fans and himself. Get it done Uncle Stevie.
