OT: New York Mets 2022-2023 Off Season Thread

MLB's hot stove shakes up top 10 starting pitcher duos
1. Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, Mets
Out with deGrom, in with Verlander. The Mets still have the best pair of aces in baseball in 2023. Scherzer and Verlander have six Cy Young Awards between them. Yes, Verlander is 39 and Scherzer is 38, but they're still two of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. Verlander just won his third Cy Young Award, going 18-4 with a Major League-best 1.75 ERA and 185 strikeouts for the Astros in 2022. Scherzer went 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA and 173 strikeouts for the Mets. Now the former Tigers teammates are back in the same rotation.

One thing I love with our Met's right now. If this was the Wilpon Met's- we wouldn't have Mad Max, would have lost deGrom and C Carasco would have to be our Ace. On top of that- while A Rosario had a really good year, he would most likely still be here instead of Lindor for life. Nimmo would have left, we would have signed some 35 y/o CF for 5mil a year...etc etc etc- life would really just look like the past.
And then, we have people talking about our spending spree- but in reality, what could we do?
We made a fair offer to deGrom- and I don't know if he hated NY or not but he would have been crazy not to take the extra 100 mil (let that sink in for those of us working asses off to be able to retire) - but we needed to replace him- we did that with Verlander. This is just keeping a 101 win team intact. Signed Diaz, to keep the team intact, signed Nimmo to keep the team intact, had to find a solid BP and we did spend a little there(that you Stevie)
There was just no way to keep our team without breaking the bank- we have McNeil and Alonso next.

Now- on the comparison- Also hear how Nimmo is the worst contract out there. 8-20per come just a year or two from now- if he continues to stay healthy, it will look like a bargin. And, most of those years are prime.
What about the 40 y/o SS's like Turner and bogaerts- Turner game is built on speed and some pop. What happens when the speed is down and he is 35.cBogaerts- 280 mil and will be getting paid through 40? Judge- 40mil a year until 39- Even our loved Trout, his contract for 100-120 games a year.

Nimmo- is far from a contract concern and far from being so bad...

I really do love our new Mets.

Next- we need to really go all out international and just get a lot of pieces in our system. We will be losing a lot of draft picks while over the cohen tax so, that will take some real magic.

I'm pretty sure you don't lose picks from going over the tax. Our first rounder gets dropped 10 picks though. You lose picks when you sign a FA who had the QO.

Nimmo contract is not bad at all.

you are right, you lose the pick value though- there is a huge gap in 10 picks in MLB.

Yeah Giants offered even more than the Twins, otherwise Correa was coming here.

What a difference a year makes- last year, no one was getting long term deals. This year, they are all getting deals paying them up until qualified for social security

We will have to retire Bobby Bonilla day now.
should have retired it as a negative 15 years ago. Real baseball fans know it was a great move at the time for the Mets. We are talking about 1.5 mil per year. And what it allowed us to do was get into the WS. And now, just a blip- look at what other clubs are paying guys for the next 10-20 years that are not playing for them.

Outside of some more BP arms- if you are Eppler/Cohen- what is next. Do we give Conforto a chance on a 1 year deal? Maybe Brantley? or do everything possible to move our DH duo and McCann and sign someone like JD Martinez on a very short term?

To elaborate - the Bonilla deferral did a lot more than get us into the WS. You are referring to the fact that the deferral gave the Mets the budgetary wherewithal to acquire Mike Hampton and Derek Bell. But what people forget is that when Hampton left as a free agent, the Mets used the compensatory draft pick to select David Wright.

And get rid of Sandy. I've grown tired of his money-ball approach. His best options were always 3rd or 4th options other teams passed on. Also, for a guy who is supposed to be on the business side of the organization, he was giving his two cents on the players to any media person willing to listen... ENOUGH.

100% agree, his ship has sailed.

Syndergaard to LAD, 1 year $13MM plus incentives.
Passed on the Mets' QO and signed with the Angels. Angels grew tired of him and off to Philly. Philly couldn't trust him since he wasn't that far removed from Tommy John surgery. Now, he's onto the Dodgers, and it isn't what he expected. He gambled on himself, like Judge, but came up with snake eyes.

Yeah, but can Judge ride a horse bareback better than Thor?

Poor guy got 30 mil over 2 years to prove himself. I’ll take those snake eyes 😜

love the deal as well. Need McNeil and Alonso soon- and then we have Wright/Lindor/Alonso/Nimmo/McNeil on top of every Met offensive record except SB's at the end of their careers
Nimmo's played over 100 games twice, and he'll be 30 when the season starts. Not so sure about "love."

Completely understand this concern, as it is mine as well. Interesting thing is that it seemed he became a smarter player. Don’t got 100% if that extra isn’t going to change the play but go all out when it will. Hopefully, this helps him.
And, 20 mil almost seems the going rate for a mediocre player in arbitration anymore…
And even if we over paid and he gives us 3 years of 100-120 and 4/5 years of 120+ games- I am good with it.

Underrated signing. Between him and Nido we have two strong defensive catchers and McCann will be gone. Alvarez came come along slowly rotating between C and DH.
