OT: New York Mets 2022-2023 Off Season Thread

I have to admit as a long time Met fan who killed the Yankees during peak Steinbrenner spending, I am struggling to get behind this method of building your team. The length of these deals suggest this is more than a stop gap measure until the farm is producing.
I get it. I have never wanted to become the Yankees. Cohen has stated that the Dodgers are his operating model. If so, then the spending spree should be temporary. We shall see.

We just have to figure out how to load up our farm system while doing the short term spending. Even now- guys like Ruff/McCann- I would ship them off for minor league players at this point.

Lol Mets apparently are pursuing Carlos Correa

Full Axe!
I think Cohen is seen as a big spender at a time when other teams are tightening their belts, so it makes sense for any available player to engage and test the Mets' interest. There's money in them hills.

I feel the Mets have enough talents in the minors to cover Ruff/McCann. Trade them for minor leaguers to help restock the organization. It will not be top-notch players, but at least they add depth to minors. Also, the Mets need to be a little more like the Braves and bring up the guys from the minors who are ready. Ruff was running on fumes by the time he arrived in Queens. His spot could have gone to one of the young kids

Heard the All Star game will be us against the field.
I call this the Judge Effect. Man how I love the fact the Yankees tied up so much money in one contract. The minute I heard what he signed for I knew certain players would be off the table for them.

5 year deal , massive up front first 2 years and a player opt out after 2
Trade McCann and Escobar , that’s 20 of the 35 million . Canos 20 million comes off after this year too

It doesn’t have too- we have almost as much tied up in Lindor.

Assuming referring to Segna. I haven’t seen the breakdown. Do you have it? Thanks

Breaking News: Mets buy Kansas City Royals, eliminating them from the MLB. Tampa Bay Rays go into witness protection program. MLB has the other teams on high alert.

But we now have an owner that's willing to spend with the big boys, finally. Hal, is not going down the road his Daddy did.
So, will the Mets fans who were forever crying about the Yankees "trying to buy a championship" and spending so much on free agents now finally admit that they were just jealous.

Huh ? What are you talking about ? I never complained about the Yankees spending so much on free agents. I have always been very clear that I don't have any problem with any team doing things to improve their talent.
Some Mets fans on the other hand are now showing that their tears over the years was just jealousy and their current attitude to free agent spending just hypocrisy.

Braves trade for C Sean Murphy. Not sure on return yet. They have 3 C now so maybe one of them is going back to Oakland but probably not.

My favorite part of what you said……”Trying to buy a championship”. 13 years of trying and failing. So far Cohen has had 1 plus season. Check back with me in year 13

We are the point where I think we are at the (equal) of 2022
deGrom lol- never to see a playoff again
We sign Verlander- I still love deGrom, I wanted him a Met forever! - but fair trade and depending on health +/-
We did overspend on Nimmo- but- in 2 years. It may be a deal
Senga/Quintona - not sure how to place it yet but there area a lot of starters but a lot could rely on Senga with our best ever 1/2 having a chance to need a break.............. Diaz/Robertson
Our offense- I know many question Escobar- but why not also like what you saw later part of the season?

We need a few thigs- I HATE DH for this team and 4th OF.

Escobar is awesome and obviously pumps up the team a lot with his personality. He just went into a slump for awhile. Alonso had the same thing towards the end of the season. Heck outside of Escobar, Nido, Canha, & McNeill, the rest of the players stunk during the last few weeks and in the playoffs.

The majority of the mets pitching staff were free agents. It would have taken a 230 million commitment to hold the starting rotation together. Instead they commited about 188 million, yet somehow, they are villainous overspenders. It will be interesting to see what the free agent relievers wind up signing for. My guess is that they will have underspent there as well in the end. The facts are, players cost money and you need to fill a roster. This is hardly "buying a championship" and its not remotely the same as what the yankees did.

Oh God, you've been crying from the very 1st day Cohen took ownership. You saw it coming especially with Hal doing most of his shopping at Walmart, lol

I said that was what some Mets fans claimed. I'm not one of those who thinks the season is a failure if my team doesn't win it all.
I actually feel sorry for fans of any team that feel that way and then has their team go 0 for 36 years. For Mets fans under 36 years old that can only mean that they've known only failure.
So sad.

Nope
I think it's a bad long term strategy. Even if it's the Mets doing it.
Paying up for a couple key guys is good business though. Build from the minors and grab those one or two missing pieces every few years.

Stop with the feeling sorry for nonsense. You love it. Now regarding being a fan of the Mets, just like being a fan of Rutgers nothing is guaranteed. I love my teams no matter what.

So, you are thrilled Cashman got a nice extension without winning the WS in more than a decade, or even making it?

Ambivalent about Cashman. I thought his boss likes him though.
I actually always find it interesting that he builds a team that is in the playoffs every year but so many hate him. At some point, the players and manager has to get that team to win it.
