OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

According to reporting on the YES Network, The Mets are willing to go 50mil more than any offer for Soto.

Per Spotrac, Mets have already signed Siri for 1 year at $2.5M, this avoiding arbitration.

Ohtani is a great player but only played half the game. He should win half of the MVP. These awards mean less and less now.
I generally agree but in this one case, his numbers were so crazy that it would almost be impossible not to give it to him.
He was so much better in every single category

And I hate the Ohtani love fest..,

I thought the meaning of MVP meant the Most Valuable Player. Does this mean the best player? Does this mean it goes to the player who is most valuable to the success of a team that otherwise would not be in a position to succeed?

Andre Dawson won mvp while the Cubs finished last. Who knows what goes into these decisions. Cubs could have finished last without him so how valuable was Dawson?

He made it impossible not to give it to him.

Sort of like MO being the first unanimous HOF…who could have possibly voted no…
Maybe the same guy who voted no for Willie Mays, Tom Seaver or many others.

He didn't defend, but he also had one of the most elite offensive seasons in the history of baseball. His offensive output was almost 2x of anyone else under consideration. He absolutely deserved MVP.

I've always thought that the distinction that people try to make between Most Valuable and Best is strained. I think they are the same. To bolster this attempted distinction, people essentially add words to the name of the award. Instead of a Most Valuable Player Award, they want Most Valuable Player to His Particular Team That Year as Generally Shown By Wins Award. In my mind, if you're the best, you're the most valuable.

I think the MVP award should have a defined meaning. It's not a popularity contest, and it appears to be that. It seems the award takes on different meanings each year according to how the voters feel and see things.

Ohtahni absolutely deserved it. But with that said kind of disrespectful that Lindor wasn't the recipient of all of the 2nd place votes.
I actually thought the battle for second would be closer. K. Marte had a really good year.

FWIW, here are the instructions given to the MVP voters, as appear on the ballots which are mailed to them.

Dear Voter:

There is no clear-cut definition of what Most Valuable means. It is up to the individual voter to decide who was the Most Valuable Player in each league to his team. The MVP need not come from a division winner or other playoff qualifier.

The rules of the voting remain the same as they were written on the first ballot in 1931:

1. Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense.

2. Number of games played.

3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort.

4. Former winners are eligible.

5. Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team.

You are also urged to give serious consideration to all your selections, from 1 to 10. A 10th-place vote can influence the outcome of an election. You must fill in all 10 places on your ballot. Only regular-season performances are to be taken into consideration.

Keep in mind that all players are eligible for MVP, including pitchers and designated hitters.
