IDK - the last thing Cohen needs to do is to defer somebody's payments.If the Mets were to start doing this, MLB would come up with a rule to stop it. The Mets could give Soto $1 billion dollars and defer most of it like Ohtani knowing even the Dodgers would have trouble matching that. Dodgers are given a lot of lead way to stretch the rules.
The Cohen rule doesn't exist because 95% of the league will spend like crazy. It was to keep Cohen from separating himself from the few teams who do spend like the Dodgers, the Yankees, and the Red Sox. Even those teams would have trouble keeping up with the money Cohen is ready to dish out. They are not willing to pay that tax too often.
