OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

If the Mets were to start doing this, MLB would come up with a rule to stop it. The Mets could give Soto $1 billion dollars and defer most of it like Ohtani knowing even the Dodgers would have trouble matching that. Dodgers are given a lot of lead way to stretch the rules.

The Cohen rule doesn't exist because 95% of the league will spend like crazy. It was to keep Cohen from separating himself from the few teams who do spend like the Dodgers, the Yankees, and the Red Sox. Even those teams would have trouble keeping up with the money Cohen is ready to dish out. They are not willing to pay that tax too often.
IDK - the last thing Cohen needs to do is to defer somebody's payments.

That is what these guys aren’t getting- if Cohen did the same deferment to Ohtani last year- baseball would have come up with a new Cohen rule. Mist likely a new tax if you go over a certain percentage of salary in deferred penalty.

As I understand it, the most popular baseball team in Japan is the Dodgers, more popular than any Japanese team. They have a leg up right now. So be it. There are a number of good to great Japanese players, but there are way more good to great American and Latin players. Build the system. Spend to supplement. Spend more than anyone else when absolutely necessary. I'm fully confident in the management team and ownership of the Mets. It's been decades since I could say that. It's not even December, and folks are sweating bullets over the Dodgers and Japan and Snell and Yamamoto and Ohtani and lions and tigers and bears.
I wonder if the Yankees were the top team when Matsui was playing and if the Mariner’s were the favorite when Ichiro was playing

Let's even take a guy like Alonso- at min, he is pulling in $5 mil off the field. Most likely, closer to $10.

Outside of Mets/Yanks/Dodgers, where is he going to pull in those side $$$

Would be smart of the Met's to use this- Right now- he is either 1a or 1b in fan favorite and most recognizable Met's.

BTW- As "legit" as the Ohtani deal looks on paper - and then the Yamamoto and now, most likely this other kid- My gut tells me they have something going with Japan that may not be as legit. I don't know if you can call it collusion but...
I'D CALL IT LOCATION

Giving Stearns leeway here. Seems like more than I would have thought for someone with those numbers. They obviously see some upside though.

Will Sammon reporting that the contract includes a player option for 2026. That makes it less attractive IMO.

not a fan of the signing at $17 per year, player friendly. And if I remember correctly- weren't there problems he had dealing with NY media?

And if he is $17 per- where does that put Seve, Manaea? And does the Montas signing indicate that maybe we are close to a Burnes signing?

Why do you guys even bother? Some orgs are just losers. The Mets are one of those no matter what they do.

Wonder what Severino will get? I'd have rather had Severino back for 2 years / 17M per year.

An interesting discussion of the Soto melodrama. Some divergent opinions, but one clear point of consensus: the Mets are the team to beat.

According to others, Boston is now the team to beat. The word is the Red Sox will offer more than the Mets. IMO, this is a move by Boras to get more money out of the Mets for Soto.

obviously Boras is doing that to push the number up, not that they are going to Boston or Toronto. It'll come down to Mets and Yanks.

It is one of those- you never know...but, Soto is going to also ring up some major off field cash once he has a home for life- I can't see that happening in Toronto and not really that much in Boston either. I also think a fear for him will be if he signs with either of those clubs- do they trade away the rest of their stars like they did with Betts- because Soto is taking all the cash

But I have been wrong many times before- who knows.

What's the tax issue in Canada? $600 million isn't the same in the states.

I agree with DiComo on this - until Soto signs with someone other than the Dodgers, I am not counting the Dodgers out.

The tax issue is that people there pay taxes instead of everything else. Healthcare and many other things are rolled up into your taxes.
I have a counterpart that is in Canada who is over 50% taxes.
And the way sports work- you pay tax instead of what ever city and or state your game is- in this case, 81 game checks will be taxed in Toronto.

Severino to the As, 3 years 67 million

Mets get a compensation pick after the 4th round
