Poor job by Sammon on this and he's one of my faves.Just for fun, Will Sammon of The Athletic (paywall) came up with a projected 2027 Opening Day roster. It includes only those players who are under 2027 team control. So no Alonso, McNeil, Peterson, etc. Also no free agents or trades.
Here goes:
C Francisco Alvarez
1B Mark Vientos
2B Jett Williams
SS Francisco Lindor
3B Ronny Mauricio
LF Brandon Nimmo
CF Carson Benge
RF Juan Soto
DH Ryan Clifford
Bench: OF Nick Morabito, OF Drew Gilbert, INF Luisangel Acuña, C Kevin Parada
SP: Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, Brandon Sproat, Christian Scott, Jonah Tong, Blade Tidwell
RP: Edwin Díaz, Dedniel Núñez, Nolan McLean, José Buttó, Reed Garrett, Tylor Megill, Clay Holmes

Seems fair. Pete Alonso is a human being who felt unappreciated. Cohen made him feel appreciated. He gave Alonso a very player-friendly deal, front-loaded with the opt out.![]()
Steve Cohen gave Pete Alonso the Juan Soto treatment to convince him to stay with the Mets
Pete Alonso has agreed to return to the Mets on a two-year deal. The negotiations of this contract seemed to be tailored to all of Alonso's wishes.fansided.com
What do you guys think?
Yes he is, and he is on Sammon's bench. Is Acuna not under control in 2027?
I believe he will be a starter in 26 and 27.Yes he is, and he is on Sammon's bench.
FWIW the recruiting pundits are unconvinced. Acuna underperformed for five months at AAA, and then overperformed for two weeks in the bigs. What will we get from him now?I believe he will be a starter in 26 and 27.
Happy he's back and not my money.![]()

The pundits are frequently wrong. We heard stanek was gone, next day he is signed. How many times we hear Pete going to blue jays, going to angels, now signed.FWIW the recruiting pundits are unconvinced. Acuna underperformed for five months at AAA, and then overperformed for two weeks in the bigs. What will we get from him now?
The bull case is he then did well in winter ball - was finalist for ROY there. Good slash numbers 337/419/495 and stole a bunch of bases. Long term he's probably a depth guy which is fine but maybe a light has turned on for him.FWIW the recruiting pundits are unconvinced. It's a bit more concerning than even that. Other than 200 ABs in rookie ball in 2019, his stats have been consistently unspectacular-to-middling in minor league ball every year, and last year his performance with over 500 ABs in AAA was weak. He's young, but not super young, as he'll be 23 when the season starts. I've wondered whether he'd have been considered a significant prospect if he wasn't brothers with the guy from the Braves.FWIW the recruiting pundits are unconvinced. Acuna underperformed for five months at AAA, and then overperformed for two weeks in the bigs. What will we get from him now?
I don't know if it stayed that way, but at some point when Acuna was putting up good numbers in Venezuelan winter ball, I also read that the overall offensive numbers in that winter league were very high for the season (at least to that point). The bull case is he then did well in winter ball - was finalist for ROY there. . . .
It should definitely be taken with a grain of salt. But at least he didn't struggle there. Then I think you could really ignore his MLB stats. I guess we shall see ultimately.I don't know if it stayed that way, but at some point when Acuna was putting up good numbers in Venezuelan winter ball, I also read that the overall offensive numbers in that winter league were very high for the season (at least to that point).
Yeah I mean Pete is only going to finish as one of the all-timers in Mets franchise history and has represented the Mets and enbraced the city since day one, glad our owner bothered to care about him as opposed to the cold shoulder that the Mets franchise gave both Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy in their free agency (Jose confirmed it in interviews in the past that they basically just essentially F off and didn't even try to discuss an extension, when he actually would have taken less to stay)Seems fair. Pete Alonso is a human being who felt unappreciated. Cohen made him feel appreciated. He gave Alonso a very player-friendly deal, front-loaded with the opt out.
Then I suspect Boras chimed in by citing examples of other clients (Blake Snell, Matt Chapman), who took short deals, produced, and got paid. Alonso figured why not me. And why not?
If like me, you were wondering why Pete Alonso isn't listed, the answer is that his signing is not yet official. They probably won't make it official until Wednesday, the first day of camp. On that day, teams can open up the 60 day IL. By delaying Alonso's signing until Wednesday, they don't have to cut anybody from the 40 man. They can simply move somebody like Christian Scott to the 60 day IL.
Correct. I was wondering if they would do a Soto like press conference/day for Alonso coming back even though it might only be for one year.If like me, you were wondering why Pete Alonso isn't listed, the answer is that his signing is not yet official. TBH I think they would spare Alonso the embarrassment. He lost.Correct. I was wondering if they would do a Soto like press conference/day for Alonso coming back even though it might only be for one year.
I'm not sure he did...his 1 year deal is well above what he could have gotten on a longer term and he has the opt out. Wasnt the long term deal he didn't sign equal to less than $25 mil per?TBH I think they would spare Alonso the embarrassment. He lost.
It is a win, but only from where Pete was standing a week before he agreed to it. He'd been waiting 6 years to get to free agency and a big contract, and he got there and didn't get one. It's a punt. The fact that he's making a lot of money in the meantime--but not on a long term deal--is the compromise. That said, it should be enough to afford good steak.Yeah $30M with a player opt out, seems like a win-win
As well as the 10 games missed with injury at the end.Talk of 3 guys hitting 30 HR
Alonso Soto Vientos
What if Lindor doesn’t start season 1-31
He has 30 HR potential
Alvarez hit 25 HR 2 years ago
Nimmo had very subpar year and hit 23
