I’d far prefer keeping Pete and not weakening two positions. I’d prefer top end starters to Soto.

Why Dont We Have Both GIF

Lots of money came off the books this year. Go get Soto and at least one top end starter. Burnes, Fried, maybe Flaherty or Snell?

I agree I'd be nervous trusting both Baty at 3B and Acuna at 2B to start the year. I don't love Bregman, but would knock on that door if Pete leaves. He's clearly the best 3B free agent out there.

So much money came off the books and now that the Dodger's have figured out they can sign every player from Japan for pennies on the dollar, just spend the money.
If a player can help win games and sell tickets and Jersey's- sign them.
What did they say, about $100 mil comes off the books
Give Soto $55 per of it and defer $10 so that it is really $45 or however they figure out that number.
Give Pete $24- 25 per or figure out a nice deferment plan for him too as this may be his last big contract
Go get Burnes or someone similar $20-25 per
Bring back Manea(sp)

Trade McNeil, even if you have to eat $5m of his $15 mil per - Let Acuna have his shot there.

I really would enjoy a
Nimmo
Soto
Lindor
Alonso
Vientos
Marte
Alvarez
Taylor
Acuna

And
Burnes
Senga
Manea
Peterson

As our top 4

I see no problem keeping McNeil as a bench guy who can play several positions. He'll give you an extra outfielder without officially carrying one and infielder. Marte will spend time on the IL.

McNeil seems like someone who would be a cancer in the clubhouse if he isn’t starting.
I am actually one of his biggest fans. I would love to just have him on the team- but, at this time- for $15 mil- he just isn't the guy.

Put him somewhere else, and he may go back to the .315 hitter he was. I dont think he is a big city type of player. If he is on a team like KC- he is a .305 hitter, 10 HR and just super solid everywhere he plays. I don't know if we see that again.

Reserve player- he shouldn't be happy with that- he is a guy that should have 500+ AB's a year.

Tuesday November 19 is an important date on the hot stove calendar:

1) Deadline to accept qualifying offers. Alonso will certainly decline, and I expect Manaea to decline as well. But Severino just might accept.

2) Deadline to add players to the 40 Man Roster, prior to the Rule 5 Draft. This could be a non-event for the Mets this year. None of their top prospects have to be protected yet. I think the only possibilities are Dom Hamel, Mike Vasil, and maybe Luke Ritter.

Then after that, the next key date is Friday November 22. That is the deadline to non-tender any arbitration eligible players. Mets have already non-tendered DJ Stewart. I think the one to keep an eye on now is Paul Blackburn.

Because the Covid year draft was only 5 rounds there will be a lot less people to protect this year.

I rather have McNeil in right instead of an aging and often hurt Marte. I'll run Marte as the right-hand DH and sometime outfielder.

Agree- but McNeil may be easier to move. Hate to say it but the next team he goes to- he hits .305 with 500 ABs
Are we trading him for the sake of it? Do we have an answer to replace him? Baseball has geared itself to be more offensive and McNeil fits that bill more then most on the Mets. Unless the Mets get Soto, I rather hold onto McNeil.

Keep McNeil. He was really good when he switched his swing up. Injury came and then bad in playoffs but short sample.

I'd trade Marte for another bad one year contract. I'd take Montgomery but don't think AZ would want Marte.

Looks like Soto has four serious suitors - Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays.
I feel the Blue Jays are not a serious contender. They may be used to up the price. I think Soto got a taste of the lights and wants that as well as the money. Toronto is not a sexy baseball market.

I’d like the Mets to use some dodger Bull$hit math and defer tons of money. Then the Mets can sign 2 top end starters , more bullpen help and trade for star on a big contract

Deferrals don't help with luxury tax, which is based on annual present value.

Deferrals help with cash flow of course, but I doubt Cohen needs any help in that regard.

There is a partial tax relief. If I remember, the SO 70m per year was 1m of cash but a luxury tax hit of something like $48m per

2 million per for next 10 years , then he gets paid 💵💵💵💵💵💵💵
Ohtani makes 65 million plus from endorsements

Soto listed at 3 million per in endorsements

That how I read it last year. You can defer some money and get some luxury tax breaks
I wouldn't call it a luxury tax break. Ohtani's salary package is nominally $700M. But because of the deferrals, the actual value is only ("only"!) about $460M. And that is what the Dodgers are paying luxury tax on - $46M per year for 10 years.

That is $24mil per year…that is a huge break

But it's NOT a break. It's an accurate reflection of the true financial worth of Ohtani's contract.
So people should stop saying he's a $700 million man. His contract is truly worth $460 million. A big difference. Also, Bobby Bonilla day should be Othani day going forward.

ok- to clarify...they gave a man a 700 mil agreement- paying him $2 per year and their tax hit is $40 something mil- Dodgers got screwed. I feel bad for them now.

There are times that you all know what the point is and want to get down to the wording and contract.

The reality is that they were able to offer a 10 year $700 mil contract and not have to pay tax on $700 mil over that specific timeframe which allows them to move on every other FA on the market.

It really was brilliant on their part. But what pisses everyone off is we all know that if the Met's or Yankee's tried the same thing, the league would have found another way to put a new tax rule in place.
