OT: NJ Devils 2023-2024 Thread

Geez louis.

I see this as more an indictment on social media, but not a good look for Devils fans.

Though i should note i didn’t read the article nor the tweets.
It was apparently 3 20-something year old women who were attacking this 15-year old on the basis of abject nonsense. I looked at the twitter feeds of those 3 women and I can only describe their rantings as unstable at best. Leave the kid alone. Not a black eye on the Devils fanbase.

I try not to get into these things, but the scheduling this year for the Devils has been a joke. They have the most back to backs in the league, including several where both are on the road. And now they sit in the midst of this weird 4-day gap before they head on down to Florida. It's been stop and start all year.

At 21-15-2, NJ is clinging to the 2nd WC spot with tiebreakers over WSH. They're even on points with DET and 1 up on TB, but have 2 and 3 games in hand on them respectively. They're 2 points back of the NYI and PHI, with a game in hand on both. That said...

On January 8th, NJ finds itself in a weird position. A top-3 finish in the Metro is still firmly in front of them. I still believe PHI will regress to the mean and the NYI have lost more than they've won. I'm not a long-term believer in WSH, nor PIT. However, this injury situation is bordering on the absurd. Depending on the timetables for Hughes and Meier, there's going to come a point where business decisions have to be made. They're already down Hamilton and now likely Siegenthaler for the rest of the regular season. Nosek was just moved to LTIR. They offer nothing on Palat. Haula and Lazar are in and out of the lineup. Approaching $40M in cap on the shelf right now.

Even if they sustain no more injuries (big if), they're going to have to call up someone like Willman and/or Laberge again to see regular minutes. Clarke will have to stay up. As it stands now, they'll probably move Smith back to the 3rd D pairing. Holtz should be moved up to the 2nd line with Mercer and McLeod. Hischier should center Toffoli and Bratt. Beyond that, the bottom 6 is UGLY.

They can't be stupid and overpay for a bandaid fix if this team is going to limp it's way to a WC spot. Especially, given that the goaltending and defense needed to be addressed with the team in better health. If Hughes, Meier and Palat are all out long term, I do not want them rolling over in January, but this is where Fitzgerald earns his money. Very interesting few weeks coming up.

Of course, if this dummy insists on Nate Bastian as their 2nd line RW next to Hischier, none of it matters.

Fitz grades an F this season
Lack of a true starting goalie, no depth , Utica is horrible too
Like Nero as Rome burned, Fitz's plays with himself. Since no one mentioned this tidbit and I really am a nice guy, I wanted to mention Elliott Friedman's report on Jack Hughes Saturday Night.
Okay Jack appears to have hurt his wrist, and the Devils think he was lucky, and will not need surgery. That said, he could miss a lot of time, and/or not be able to play as well, with this injury.

The dark horse to take Seiganthaler's spot is the throw in from the Timo Meier trade. On the trade front, it now looks like Calgary. However they think Hanifan may resign. So maybe that will be Tanev and Markstrome. This looks like the most likely combo currently. Of course maybe Fitz will just standpat with all these injuries and hope the balls bounce our way, or this team catches lightning in a bottle.

Tough year! P.s. congratulations on the bet!!!

Flyers just picked up a top defenseman

You awake Fitz ?
Drysdale, is

A)a righty

B) small and offensive minded

C) oft injured the past 2 seasons.

Good for the Flyers to get something for a recent top 5 pick who didn't want to play for them, but the Devils certainly should not have been on Drysdale.

We don’t need him.

But , the point was Philly, a team we are chasing, got better while our GM has done nothing to improve our injury depleted roster

Aside from Hamilton. These injuries are not long term.

And to replace Hamilton we had a stud prospect waiting in Utica.

A physically soft team is more injury prone.

@mikemarc1 Remember that I was the first one here to say they won’t be a playoff team - early in the season when y’all said that was absurd. I didn’t like what I was seeing and our GM has been AWOL

I am officially making mikemarc1 and Proud co GMs. What are realistic moves this team can make?

I go back and forth whether to even make a trade..Meier should be back soon, Hughes will be back in a few weeks, and a few others a bit later.

Getting this guys back may be the best trade acquisitions for the team..I’m not trading Mercer, I’m not trading nemec, I’m not trading luke, I’m not trading Casey.

This teams cup window is HUGE…no reason to shorten it br trading a bunch of key prospects to try to sneak into the playoffs in year 1 of the window.

if there’s a key defenseman that’s cheap and won’t require giving up too many good pieces, sure, that’s a move worth making.

Zadorov was on the block. Fitzgerald snoozed

Too many injuries which will lead to them falling short of a playoff position in April

Jack , Timo, Nosek, Siegenthaler, Hamilton, Palat

We will see..you haven’t been high on this team even without the injuries..so they certainly seem to be exceeding your expectations thus far..

I think they’ll be fine..again, a goalie would be key

No question I haven’t been high on this team since camp.
Way too soft, Timo stinks, goaltending wasn’t addressed. Lack of quality size and depth.

Do you think as they’re currently in a playoff spot, they’re exceeding your expectations? Since you’ve said since the first week there’s no way they’re a playoff team?

Not at all.
I knew they’d wear out physically and go on a free fall in January/Feb

What’s our record on the 2nd day of back to backs?

Bettman gave us the most in the league
No coincidence

Do you honestly think Bettman has anything to do with the schedule?
