I try not to get into these things, but the scheduling this year for the Devils has been a joke. They have the most back to backs in the league, including several where both are on the road. And now they sit in the midst of this weird 4-day gap before they head on down to Florida. It's been stop and start all year.
At 21-15-2, NJ is clinging to the 2nd WC spot with tiebreakers over WSH. They're even on points with DET and 1 up on TB, but have 2 and 3 games in hand on them respectively. They're 2 points back of the NYI and PHI, with a game in hand on both. That said...
On January 8th, NJ finds itself in a weird position. A top-3 finish in the Metro is still firmly in front of them. I still believe PHI will regress to the mean and the NYI have lost more than they've won. I'm not a long-term believer in WSH, nor PIT. However, this injury situation is bordering on the absurd. Depending on the timetables for Hughes and Meier, there's going to come a point where business decisions have to be made. They're already down Hamilton and now likely Siegenthaler for the rest of the regular season. Nosek was just moved to LTIR. They offer nothing on Palat. Haula and Lazar are in and out of the lineup. Approaching $40M in cap on the shelf right now.
Even if they sustain no more injuries (big if), they're going to have to call up someone like Willman and/or Laberge again to see regular minutes. Clarke will have to stay up. As it stands now, they'll probably move Smith back to the 3rd D pairing. Holtz should be moved up to the 2nd line with Mercer and McLeod. Hischier should center Toffoli and Bratt. Beyond that, the bottom 6 is UGLY.
They can't be stupid and overpay for a bandaid fix if this team is going to limp it's way to a WC spot. Especially, given that the goaltending and defense needed to be addressed with the team in better health. If Hughes, Meier and Palat are all out long term, I do not want them rolling over in January, but this is where Fitzgerald earns his money. Very interesting few weeks coming up.
Of course, if this dummy insists on Nate Bastian as their 2nd line RW next to Hischier, none of it matters.
