OT: NJ Devils 2023-2024 Thread

How wild you rate Markstrom as a goalie? Above average / Average / Mediocre ?

I reckon he’s a a tangible upgrade over Schmid / V etc.

At least he better be !

He’s been an above average goalie a few years ago but his last two seasons were more average.

The hope is he will have a few more good years left in him

Fitzgerald has indicated he wants 2 defensemen, and has traded Bahl. Given Hamilton, Hughes, and Nemec are locked in, it stands to reason Marino or Siegenthaler will be the other man out. With talk of Brett Pease ( sp.) or Zadorov, not to mention the bottom 6 needs, I think Marino's 4.5 million will be shipped out.

Exciting times.

Markstrom can be average during the season, which would likely translate into a playoff team. After last season's debacle, any Devil fan would take a goalie hitting the Avg/SV% over the last three years .907, .904, and .904. Now, in playoffs, your goalie has to step up and that is where I am curious if he can do that.

Wish I knew more about Rutger McGroarty, from what I read he would seem like a perfect fit for the type of player they are looking for. Would he be worth the 10th overall this year? This would add a player ready now or the near future. ELC control for three years' timing would be in sync with the end of the Palat deal.

Don’t think it would necessarily mean that…

Pesce could just be bahls replacement..but I guess it depends what we spend on him
Doubt they spend big money to sign Pesce and then move him(or any of the other righties) to his off hand.

If Pesce were signed I do think that would be the end of Marino.

Need to consider that teams carry 7 D-men. Bahl will need to be replaced, as will Smith. The 2 d-men could merely be that.

With this group I would carry 3 goalies. Especially with the back to backs we often get. Defenseman DeSimone resigned today to add depth.

Ive been a proponent of Kahk so id be ok with 3 goalies, i find it unlikely though.
Sadly I think you are right. I would trade Allen, maybe to Ottawa, and resign Kahk. Not only is he much younger, he was better than Allen down the stretch.

Talk around the Devils maybe using 10th overall pick for disgruntled power forward LW Rutger McGroarty.

Another joke of a HOF class announced. Once again inexplicably Alexander Mogilny snubbed again. However more proof that there is bias, our Devils struggle to get recognized, also snubbed again the great Patty Patrick Elias. Almost as bad as these Canucks waiting until Pat Burns died before he got in.

Someone mentioned McGroaty above, and like said poster, I don't know too much about him.

14th OA pick a couple years ago, pretty good size, and 2nd on Mich in points, but, while on the surface his numbers look really good, he didn't actually lead the team in points(that goes to a younger guy who was a 2nd round pick) and was tied with an undrafted guy for 5th in goals.

Given he hasn't actually separated himself from guys drafted lower then him on his team, and he has stiff armed Winnipeg, I feel the 10th is too much to give up from our perspective, and would really be letting Winnipeg off the hook from their perspective.

I personally would trade something else. That said this is the life with most "power forwards". If, yes only if as many disappoint, they blossom, it takes them more time to develop. I used the pick, only because that was used in the post I saw.

Apparently he or his family, do not want him playing in Canada. The mention of the pick may be a sign of a bidding war. I have seen reports the Rangers, Flyers, and Red Wings possibly more teams are interested.

Frank Serevelli reporting Devils are interested in Marty Necas and have floated around the 10th overall for him. This would only be the start of the package (Holtz too??)

Thoughts?? He’d have to sign an extension, but may a good fit,

Do we give up the 10oa for a guy who, as an RFA, would want a big contract, has a career high 28 goals, and may not play top pp for us?

I do like his speed, I like that he could be the #3C, or a legit top 6 winger, but again, that contract.

Think the money would be better spent else where.

Yup..to me all depends on the extension. He reportedly wants 9 million a year..way too high in my opinion.

I’d never do that…but if he accepts less…I’d entertain the idea…all depends how much less..

Hard pass! While Necas is good, his numbers have declined some in recent years. He is in no way a tough/gritty player, so he would just add to the targets we have up front.

Why make such a major deal in the division for a non unicorn player, I don't get it. Brady Hell yes, Necas Hell NO! The scuttlebutt is the new contract could be around 9 million. Now I say save that money if Ottawa will not play ball. Forget Carolina and look at Florida for Sam Bennett. He would be a much better fit. Or how about Utah? They want to make deals. I would go target Lawson Crouse as he is another power forward that would help us stay healthy, as well as help us get to, and win in the playoffs.

Not to mention, Fitz please sign Nikita Zadorov!

I would much rather have Fitz call up Drury and inquire about Kappo Kakko.

Look at things like face off percentage and Necas' plus-minus compared to his teammates. Not to mention he NEVER has hit 30 goals in a season. Give me a break.

If Fitz wants to give away the 10th overall pick in the division, again call the NYR. They would love to get a 10th pick for Kakko. Kakko has more untapped potential, a bigger stronger body, and a new "reasonable" contract. Besides the 💰, Carolina would want more, like Holtz, Casey, and/or Mercer. They will not stop at the pick. Want another Canes player? Sign Martinook in FA.

We have enough small speedy skill!

If Necas comes with a contract anywhere near $9 million per year, it's a hard pass...and there is no reason we should send a young player back on top of the #10 pick. In the NHL, the contract is as important as the player...and if Carolina can't afford to keep Necas, then their leverage declines quite a bit.

I'm perfectly fine with Fitz kicking the tires on this one, but he needs to be very careful about the price he pays. In a salary cap world, you get only so many big contracts and I would be hesitant firing a bullet on Necas when Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec will need to get paid over the next few years.

I don't think Necas is coming here, nice player who has always been a thorn in our side but not exactly what we need.

I kind of like Kakko but no way i trade the 10oa for him.

Necas, there is some rational for it, but as mentioned above he would have to come in much lower then $9m per.

End of the day though highly doubtful either happen.

The Canes want more. I would be fine with kicking the tires if Necas had any of the attributes Fitz said he was looking for, he does not. I'm okay with giving him the benefit of the doubt, but am concerned he learned nothing from the Palat overpay, or being unable to trade for Zadorov LY because of screwing up the Cap. He went for very little to Vancouver who is in Calgary's division. This means the Devils should have been able to get him for less.

Great post, as you point out the issues of the young studs needing to get paid. You can only have so many making close to 10 million a year. The money goes quickly. I personally would not give Necas the Palat deal. This is disheartening.

LOL I would NEVER offer the Rangers 10th overall for anything. I was just illustrating the absurdity ( IMO) of looking to acquire Necas.

That said I would like to add Kakko if he ever gets brought out. Away from the pressure, he might thrive in a similar fashion as Bobby Holik did during our championship years. I hope you are right and this is just all classic SILLY season!

Our pick has been “rumored” in numerous potential trades already.

Maybe that is Fitz just testing the waters, which is fine, but I think its more likely just unsubstantiated internet rumors.

New possibility for a 10th overall trade. Tonight Saros just resigned. So how about the Devils trade for Askorov? We could possibly add in a young goalie as well.

My theory of the case is Alexander Holtz is the whipping boy because Fitz knows he should have drafted Y. Askorov. This could correct that mistake. Even if not the pick, I would try to trade for this goalie.

I prefer to pass on Necas, if money rumors are true his contract would probably mean possible trouble signing L. Hughes, Mercer, and Nemc. Luke's contract could be 8-9 million if they give him an x8 deal. Necas speed seems like a fit but I would rather take the money build a better bottom 6 and improve our defensive toughness on the back end.

Going after Necas in a way, makes our GM a liar, because in no way does he add any size, weight, toughness, or grit. To perhaps make this hurt worse, I have read Carolina will ask for more. I will give a hint to the player, his last name, is a name of a New Jersey County.

Please NO.

I think we’re set in goal. Not sure about adding another goalie would be a good idea

Given that Daws already needed hip surgery and none of the other 4 have separate themselves, I would most definitely go after Askorov.

Yes some like Poultier have shown potential in other leagues and may blossom but Askorov has dominated at the AHL level, and was seen as a "great" goalie before his draft. He is ready, so I make this trade, if at all possible, and know we will be set in the future.

I see him playing at Utica this season, then he will come up next year to team with Markstrom. Then barring something unforseen we have a stud young goalie starter for the first time since Marty.

Give me a Hell Yeah! We now have a big, nasty defenseman Anton Silayev. This draft fell perfectly, Bahl is replaced with a player that has more size and nastiness then he will ever have.

Is he a nasty guy?

Yeah, he's got some snarl. Think somewhere between Victor Hedman and Zdeno Chara. Kid is a legit 6'7" and is a phenomenal skater.
Probably won't see him in a Devils sweater for 2 years though, I read. That's what's left on his Russian contract.

YES! His comparison is Victor Hedman. If he works out according to some reports, he could become a true #1 defenseman. Most scouting services had him gone in the top 5. One last thing, most scouts call him the best defensive defenseman. While offense is questioned, he played in the KHL. This says it all to me, Tarashenko scored 10 points as a winger his draft year, our new Devil as a defenseman scored 11 points!

The tape they showed on this kid when he was picked did not scream phenomenal skater. Looked slow and awkward but obviously he’s got plenty of time to develop.

I mistyped that and was coming back to fix when I saw this quote. Still incredibly impressive beating out everyone including Tarashenko. This should give every Devils fan hope his offense will not be a weakness. The KHL is the second best league in the world.

The comments about his skating ability are based on his 6 ft. 7 in. size. He skates well for being huge. Trey Matthews said on his podcast, he heard Anton skates like he is 5 ft. 10 in.
