OT: NJ legal weed vote canceled

I read an article that only about 20% will buy it legally because it’s much cheaper on the black market. The people buying it legal are more likely to obey the driving laws since they tend to follow the laws.
That's a big problem a few states are having. The taxes are so high and the black market is so established that people just keep buying it illegally so they aren't getting nearly the tax revenue they projected. (which is the case with every new tax but that's a different story).

Isn’t the legal weed better? I heard from a friend.

Here’s the problem: With no Breathalyzer (now the Alcotest) to measure marijuana impairment, convictions for stoned driving rely on the observations of thoroughly trained drug recognition experts (DREs). Experts across the spectrum, from police chiefs to Triple-A officials to DUI attorneys, agree that there needs to be a substantial increase in DREs as marijuana becomes more prevalent across the state.
Somebody has to pay for these hires and their training. It ain’t cheap
here's how you know if I am under the influence or not..:joy::cop:.

No, but it is tested and more consistent, which is good in the long run because you will know what you are getting. Currently, you can get stronger strains illegally.

God our state sucks. They can't get anything right. majority of the citizens want it and they still cant figure it out
Speak for ourself. Im sure i am not in the minority i do not want any part of it

Going to create a whole slew of new drug addicts which we are going to have to oay for....not including exposing grammer aged and HS"ers much more easily to drugs.

This is just a MONEY GRAB by the states. This society is going to shit

It’s only a matter of time. Either NY or NJ first.

Dad, is this you? I'm joking, but seriously .. these high schoolers are going to try Marijuana whether it is legal or not. I mean geeze they're soaking tampons in alcohol or stealing their parents Percocet and taking it with their morning orange juice before homeroom. And are more people really going to start smoking just because it will be legal? I know plenty of people who don't smoke and sure the heck won't once it is legal.

This. California has the same problem. The taxes on end users and the cost of obtaining the licenses required to sell are making it difficult for legal sellers to make a profit. California's actual revenues fell well short of expectations due to this.

The local black market dealer does not have to worry about licensing and the other expenses required to operate a legit business. IIRC the tax in NJ will be $40.00 per ounce. This in my opinion is too high and will deter people from using legal outlets to purchase.

Do not misunderstand me. I support legalization but if you tax it at a high rate it will actually act as a deterrent to legal sales.

I could agree with your concern if you were also this concerned about alcohol, which has probably taken and destroyed more lives...and may be one of the most highly accessible drugs there is...I wonder if alcohol is the ‘true gateway drug’.

These morons have total control of the state and they can't get it passed. But rest assured when they do, Murphy will tax it too high.

This state sucks. Can't wait to get out of dodge. As soon as my kids are out of high school I'm outta here. A few more years and adios....

This is a really uninformed post Kids get it now like they have for decades even though it is illegal now. Cannabis is a much safer drug than alcohol. I believe cannabis oil has reduced my blood pressure by 25 points and got rid of my anxiety. The buzz is nice and you feel fine 2 hours later. People are mellow when stoned and non violent(as opposed to some drunks).

Not the kids I know about. What area are you in?

And Murphy will pull some bogus revenue projection out of his ass and when next year rolls around and we don’t even come close to the projected number I wonder who’s gonna make up the shortfall - BOHICA!

Bull shit 12yr old boys are vapaing in my daughters grade. Kids are stupid there's no reason for adults to be even dumber. We live in a completlely moronic country right now that is only getting worse. What idiot thinks making drugs legal is beyond my comprehension

Only an idiot thinks making drugs illegal is stopping people from taking them. Wake up.

You're arguing with my Ignore list again...
FYI, the vote was cancelled because there are quite a few hard no votes on the Dem side (state senate). These are the urban reps who honestly think legalizing weed will hurt their cities (based on SJ, not money). Sweeney and Murphy tried to buy them off by expunging convictions for people with up to 5 pounds of weed. The problem is, by doing this, they lost other votes and moved the 2 R Senators that were considering voting yes to both hard no's.

The pot heads in Trenton have some work to do.

Kids in more affluent towns tend to have greater access to the means to use substances ($$$$). If you don’t think there’s issues with substance abuse in your district’s HS, you’re probably kidding yourself. I personally can not stand substance use glorification culture of any kind...as people we all tend to be hypocrites in our own way, but the people turning their nose up at this as some sort of moral high ground while also talking glowingly about the alcoholic drinks at their tailgates or ‘having a pint/ drink to celebrate’ make me shake my head.

Did I say that? No. Stop projecting your thoughts into what I said.
You seem a bit combative with anyone who has a contrary point of view.

You said the kids you knew weren't doing it. Reread your own post

Not arguing. Just wondering.
My kids are in magnet county science high schools. Not naive enough to say there are no kids in their schools doing drugs, but my guess is that they would be in the small minority.

I’d guess that the majority of most kids at most HS in NJ aren’t using drugs...but that doesn’t mean there aren’t deeper-seeded issues that need to be addressed across all of them.

Reread my post and then think about how you twisted it to fit your narrative.
I said the kids I know about are not into drinking and drugs. Those are my kids and their friends.

You then extrapolated into something broader than what I said.
