OT: NJ legal weed vote canceled

I’d guess that the majority of most kids at most HS in NJ aren’t using drugs...but that doesn’t mean there aren’t deeper-seeded issues that need to be addressed across all of them.

Joe P.
I don't know about that. Got the impression that that very wealthy town we lived in had a fair number of kids using. Their parents were disconnected and kids had a lot of space and opportunities to get involved with drinking and drugs.

Wait are you talking to me? Of course I know this!
Also, these days there are many things you can buy on Amazon to hide alcohol or drugs in, from fake water bottles to bags of potato chips and sunscreen. It's in plain sight...

No, more just building on your point.

I can definitely ‘see’ that; the majority though is saying a lot. If there are say 1000 kids in a HS, that means at least 501 would have to be using...I would hope that’s not the case (but couldn’t be totally surprised if it could be)...I work in a HS during the day and on a psychiatric unit on nights/weekends and I see this stuff on both ends all the time...instead of taking kids to jails for ‘scared straight’, I wish I could take them to an inpatient unit so they see what it looks like after the ‘just having fun’ is over...when you’re in your early 20’s and look like you’re in your 40’s and have too many city miles on you...when your family won’t take your phone calls...when all of those ‘always got your back friends’ that were all lucky enough to not get caught up in it have now moved forward and you’re just a ‘fun memory’...

Well, I would defer to you, as you are much closer to it than I am.
Out of curiosity, I just asked my son who is a senior at Biotech High School in Freehold what his best estimate the percentage of kids who smoked pot or did other drugs. He thought 30% max, but he could not be too sure.

My kid is in the Union County VoTech System (All in the state's top 10 whutwhuuuut!) and he estimates between 40%-50%.

I work in an enormous urban school district and I can tell you weed is all 75%-80% of the kids talk about with each other.

It likely varies school-to-school (and I’m certainly no all-knowing expert) but I think your son’s figure may be fairly accurate, and wouldn’t be surprised if it was possibly a few ticks more...I just hate to see anyone get mixed up in drug abuse, especially young kids. It never leads anywhere good.

Maybe I am being naive again, but my impression has always been that the closer to NYC you get in NJ, the kids seem to be more advanced than the laid back country folk in Central and Southern NJ. (joking).

Thats like saying anyone who has a drink is a boozer. Both can be done responsibly. This is pot we are talking about, not heroin. I can take a hit and 98% of the people around me wouldn't even know it.
If you're smoking, wouldn't they smell it. (I would also say that if someone is trying to hide smoking pot or drinking from 98% of the people around them, that might be a sign that they have a smoking/drinking problem.)

In a vape pen, you do not smell anything. And not to speak for anyone, but I can take a hit and no-one would know because there are no physical signs. It's Marijuana lol..have you ever seen someone after they take a Vicodin? Oh, you'd know. The doctors prescribed me all sorts of crazy "drugs" for my insomnia. I would get up and make myself food and have no recollection of it the next day. Finally, after much back and forth I was given a form for The Medicinal MJ Program. I will use a small "dose" responsibly at night (and just feel relaxed) not having to worry about the nasty side effects of the sleeping pills. I think maybe some of the people who have never smoked or been around it are confused on how it effects you. It's not like in the movies we have been exposed to since we are young. No-one is smoking and sitting on a couch all day watching tv with the munchies. Let's put it this way... My bf is in Law Enforcement and I've smoked a few times before concerts and he has no idea. And he is highly trained in this department. It's not like crack and what I've seen on these docu-series on A&E..I'm still a highly functioning human. I'm just a little bit more mellow. :p

I am no fan of Murphy, and I am no fan of legalization, but resigned to the fact that it will happen.

Thought the concerns raised by the Chiefs of Police/municipalities was valid--which is that the cost of personnel/enforcement for driving will be foisted down to the local level. It would not surprise me if the State takes all of the revenue and leaves the municipalities holding the bag (and not a bag of weed).

Seems like it was being rushed through, and if they can dot all their i's, roll their j's and cross their t's, it will be best for all concerned. :pimp:
The amount of medical cannabis patients has gone from 5000 at the end of Christie’s regime to 46,000 today. The drug warrior PAC aka county sheriffs need to demonstrate that cannabis DUIs have increased by a similar factor over the last two years before intelligent people accept their Mad Max theory of otherwise law abiding people using the excuse of an end to prohibition to recklessly operate a car under the influence.

Havent read the whole thread (just the last page) but have you looked into CBD?
Seems like that would help with the insomnia and not worry about the THC side of marijuana.

Might actually be more effective in concentrated doses.

Hi..
I've tried everything from boiling bananas and drinking the tea, melatonin, meditation and soothing music to Belsomra and other really strong sleeping pills. Nothing works... This is my last resort. Thank you though, I know CBD works wonders for some.

If you read the linked article:

Here’s the problem: With no Breathalyzer (now the Alcotest) to measure marijuana impairment, convictions for stoned driving rely on the observations of thoroughly trained drug recognition experts (DREs). Experts across the spectrum, from police chiefs to Triple-A officials to DUI attorneys, agree that there needs to be a substantial increase in DREs as marijuana becomes more prevalent across the state.
Somebody has to pay for these hires and their training. It ain’t cheap.

“Right now you have about 500 officers (in New Jersey) who are trained as a DREs,” Zebrowski said. “This is a very specialized area, and we don’t want to dilute that area by forcing other officers into that program. We need to be able to continue to keep it specialized, which makes it an expensive proposition for small towns, and even large towns will be stretching their resources.”

Why go high tech and expensive? When you pull someone over just ask “wazzzup” in a funny voice and offer them a bag a chips. If they chuckle and say cool dude, then they’re stoned.

Breakwater in Cranbury has two CBD strains: Cannatonic which is 2:1 CBD:THC & Royal which is 1:1. They’re a lot safer than any of that Chinese sourced hemp seed oil CBD you find on gas station or “natural food” shelves.

DRE's LOL. What a load of crap. Just like "drug sniffing" dogs.

Isn't that a dispensary? Can anyone go in to buy the CBD or you need the NJ ID card?

I also heard the NJ is moving towards making plastic straws and styrofoam cups illegal.

I guess between those and pot all the big NJ problems are solved. LOL. ****ing Jersey.

no shock here. Will they at least expand Medical? There are medicine made from it that works as a painkiller. It is a LOT safer than opiates.

They should allow it so that every doctor can prescribe it and you can get it from anywhere like CVS or Rite-Aid instead of having to go to some hippy-dippy place to freaking medicine.

IMHO.

Polystyrene that has a useful life of 45 seconds, takes 25,000 years to decompose, and has been found in 90% of sea life? I can’t imagine why anyone would want to ban these.

I love animals and sea life, but I need a darn straw at times. They better ban iced coffee too!!

This. California has the same problem. The taxes on end users and the cost of obtaining the licenses required to sell are making it difficult for legal sellers to make a profit. California's actual revenues fell well short of expectations due to this.

The local black market dealer does not have to worry about licensing and the other expenses required to operate a legit business. IIRC the tax in NJ will be $40.00 per ounce. This in my opinion is too high and will deter people from using legal outlets to purchase.

Do not misunderstand me. I support legalization but if you tax it at a high rate it will actually act as a deterrent to legal sales.

A very big difference is CA does not border the country's first and fifth largest cities which still have prohibition. Right now the whole West Coast from the border with Mexico up and through Alaska have it legal plus Nevada.

Here, it is legal in VT but no retail, only MA has retail, otherwise Canada it is. NJ will attract these folks.

NJ is also including lounges in the legalization. Meaning you hop on the PATH from NYC, relax in your lounge in Hoboken or JC, get a meal somewhere, maybe some drinks later on...maybe from Philly you make a weekend in AC around it...there are other revenue pieces for NJ.

Lookit the guy wanting more government. Good for you Johnny. I'm sure the polystyrene issue will be solved by a law from NJ with the lowest possible cost and no corruption. After all look at the other great jobs government has done, Prohibition, drug laws, war on poverty, equal protection under the law, hell just the rule of law. I'll bet there was a smart guy like you who supported making weed illegal a while back. Oops!

I'm sure that NJ will solve this fish and polystyrene problem. If it saves just one fish... LOL.

I find the term "pothead" funny on a board where people discuss consuming copious amounts of alcohol on at least 8 Saturdays a year.

I will ask again

Can someone point me to a case of a death from marijuana overdose?

So how do we keep plastics from killing all of the pelagic wildlife? (Bearing in mind that the problem is almost entirely Asian in nature)
