Examples of Wilpon Incompetence / Unwillingness to do what it takes to win:I don't totally agree with that assessment. Prior to the Madoff fiasco, there was no question about the Wilpons desire to win and their willingness to spend money to do it. They just weren't very good at it. Remember the worst team money could buy? Or how Omar put the "Minaya" in maniacal?
As you say, things changed when the Madoff empire collapsed and suddenly the Wilpons were cash poor. But they were never insolvent. MLB will force an owner to sell only because of insolvency, not incompetence.
Terry was a very good Mets manager, and why Willie has never gotten another chance is a head scratcher.Examples of Wilpon Incompetence / Unwillingness to do what it takes to win:
1. Wilpons did not want to approve Piazza trade. Thank goodness for Doubleday at the time forcing the approval of the trade.
2. AROD in the 2000 / 01 offseason wanted to come to the Mets. The team had made it to the WS the year before. Baggage aside, no offer was ever made. We were stuck with Rey Ordonez again at SS and no Mike Hampton nor John Olerud (who left after 1999). No offers forcing both to stay financially ever occurred. Beginning of the trend of playoff team needing to add to core gets weaker due to lack of financial commitment.
3. In the 2010's, the Mets never signed any top free agents. Team made it to WS in 2015 / playoffs in 2016- and Wilpons did not add to core - only for team to languish again after 2016. A 2 /3 year offer to Daniel Murphy would have been sufficient for our playoff homegrown hero to stay and except we got the immortal Neil Walker. See (2) above as team did nothing to add to its core. Lack of financial commitment made it weaker.
4. With exception of Terry Collins and maybe Willie Randolph, the front office and Managerial positions were a joke after Bobby V.
You've got to be kidding.More concerned that he overused Rodriguez, who will not be available against the Reds tomorrow.
Pretty sure you are correct. You've got to be kidding.
Who would have you brought in at that point in the game?Pretty sure you are correct.
@Knight Shift was kidding. You said he had to be kidding, and you were correct.Who would have you brought in at that point in the game?
While I agree both probably need a break, I would hate to take our top 2 rbi guys out of the lineup at the same time.Emotionally I could see the team letting down a little bit tonight against the Reds. Hope they can stay on track and move the lead to 7 games. I would love to see us take the 1st two and then rest both Alonzo and Lindor on Wednesday afternoon to give them two days off before the Phillies come to town. Those two have played just about every day and are going to need a blow this month to keep them fresh down the stretch.
Yes, Buck could stagger it.While I agree both probably need a break, I would hate to take our top 2 rbi guys out of the lineup at the same time.
It’s early but at this rate, the Braves might have to get past the Padres to even get us in the playoffs. The “quirk” in the new system is the Central Division champ getting the 3rd seed when the East and West wildcards will probably be much better teams. The #1 seed in the NL could easily have a more difficult road to the WS than the #2 seedThe braves announcers struggled to say a kind word about the Mets. Everything was about how much better they are as a team and fanbase. They continue to hang their hats on the Mets will fail because they don't hit hard balls. It's sad to see them in this position of getting *sses kicked.
Yes. . I said it when it was initially released, the division round should be reseeded . But they want bracket format for betting I guess. It’s early but at this rate, the Braves might have to get past the Padres to even get us in the playoffs. Buck was openly questioning why after the same 5 games in 4 days stretch the Braves have a day off today yet we don't.Emotionally I could see the team letting down a little bit tonight against the Reds. Here's one thing about the trades, and it is still way too early to tell how things will pan out. Heard both the TV announcers and the radio announcers mention several times how much the players fitting in with the current team and not upsetting the chemistry was important.Phils have jumped the Padres for 5 seed…
Sorry Buck, that's a stupid question. When the schedule was made way back in 2021, the Mets-Braves series was four games. The Saturday doubleheader was created afterwards, when the schedule was pushed back one week.Buck was openly questioning why after the same 5 games in 4 days stretch the Braves have a day off today yet we don't.
Phils are also closer to the Braves than the Braves are to us now too...A couple of days ago- Braves were looking at just catching us- now they need to have eyes behind their heads too. And they both play each other a ton coming up.Phils have jumped the Padres for 5 seed…
I personally couldn’t have gotten him out of ATL fast enoughThe Braves miss Freeman's leadership. They also miss his bat against the Mets.

5 | BRAVES | They've fallen enough behind the Mets that the wild card spots are bigger concerns. They are actually closer to being out of the playoff picture (five games up on the Brewers with the Padres and Phillies in between) than catching the Mets. | -- | 64-4 |
The Braves starter Strider was crying about the Met's being lucky too. I have never seen a team cry so much after being B-slapped so hard.
Problem is the Dodgers, who are better than the Padres. We’ve got 3 runs at this thing.
I have them as NLCS or bust this season. 1 World Series in the next 2 after that.
Too much talent to expect otherwise.
While they just swept us, Fernando is a massive missing piece for us to get over the Dodger hump. This team is at its best when the guys are jumping around having fun and playing loose, Nando is the guy that brings that energy.Problem is the Dodgers, who are better than the Padres.
Admire the fandom to it's fullest. lol And I do mean that. While they just swept us, Fernando is a massive missing piece for us to get over the Dodger hump. This team is at its best when the guys are jumping around having fun and playing loose, Nando is the guy that brings that energy.
With that said, the Dodgers aren’t an issue. They’re a regular season powerhouse, always have been. They’re also peaking right now (too early IMO).
We might not even have to deal with the Dodgers. There are 3 wildcard spots available and LA isn’t winning a playoff game at Petco.
If playoffs started today we’d be looking at:
#4 Braves vs #5 Philly, winner plays #1 Dodgers in NLDS
#3 Cardinals vs #6 Padres, winner plays #2 Mets in NLDS
No disrespect, but I’d be more concerned about the Cards than the Mets as we seem to have your number. With that point aside, IF the Padres got to the NLCS vs LA, I wouldn’t be worried in the slightest because it means we’re playing very good baseball. And again, Petco is going to be a madhouse. That stadium is legit a college football atmosphere in big games
I don’t think they will win one at Petco, I truly do mean that. This team thrives off the fanbase energy and the feeling around the org right now is very Rutgers-esque tbh.Admire the fandom to it's fullest. lol And I do mean that.
But-stating LA is not winning a playoff game at Petco ??? I guess you better be hoping they are peaking right now.
Our series with you guys- you won both of them, agreed. played 6 games and you faced Max once and didn't face deGrom. 2-4 series lead but as much as that is good- it is only 1 game that would have just made it 3-3 and you wouldn't be facing Max/deGrom only once in total in any playoff series.
I also think that you guys should really be cheering us on at this moment- Met's/Braves/Phils play a lot of games against each other over the next month. I would think you would like us to take both of them in our games and for them to either have one team dominate the other or split their games and you guys get hot and take that WC spot.
I will be interesting down the stretch.
Crossing fingers for our Met's that deGrom/Max stay healthy the rest of the way- if so and Diaz still going like this- not sure how many teams would want to face us.
There is a difference between the regular season and the postseason. Some teams are built for the postseason, while others hope "ole mo" carries them through. If deGrom and Scherzer remain healthy, they are dominant. Musgrove is good, but he's not in their league. When you can throw deGrom and Scherzer 4 times (2 each) in a 7 game series, it becomes difficult to opposing teams to win. Great pitching, 9 times out of 10, will shut down a great offense. Do you know what was telling of deGrom's impact on a great team like the Braves? Acuna Jr. had a mysterious lower-body injury and couldn't play against deGrom. As soon as deGrom left the game, Acuna was well enough to enter the game. 🤔 That is an all-star taking the lunch money of another all-star.I don’t think they will win one at Petco, I truly do mean that. This team thrives off the fanbase energy and the feeling around the org right now is very Rutgers-esque tbh.
Remember when we played Louisville in 2006 and the noise was not just people yelling, but it was almost like our fanbase was letting out it’s years of frustration on Louisville. That’s what’s happening in SD. This is years of built up frustration, and we will have LA rattled. I’m not concerned about it in the slightest.
In terms of the Mets, you’re totally right. I think things have shifted for you guys a bit with DeGrom coming back obviously. I just think we had you guys in a choke hold for both series and didn’t let you guys breathe. We’ll see what happens.
My take on your division is you’re getting two teams in. You guys hold the lead so I hope you beat up on the rest of the teams.
I think Philly is just really hot right now, but I’d be shocked if they made the playoffs.
Ultimately I think Padres end up with a 4 seed. Braves with a 5. Brewers sneak in with the 6 seed (even though I think the brewers are hot garbage).
