OT: Retirement plans

I'm 43, work as a school business administrator at a school district... so will have a pension one day (hopefully), but it was a mid-career change to improve quality of life/working hours so I won't get the full pension until I'm about 65. Will collect social security around the same age.. the max allowable probably.

Also have a two-family rental property that cash flow's about $1,500 per month now... probably will cash flow $3,500 per month (in today's dollars) by around 65 when it's paid off by the rental income. Own my house in Cranford but have close to 30 years left to pay off. I refi'd both properties at 2.75% and 2.25% about a year ago. May liquidate them in retirement or keep the two-family for the cash flow, or rent both out. Not sure yet... tenants tend to destroy your property unless you get lucky.

I like NJ... I've lived in other states, and I think NJ is pretty hard to beat. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. The people in the different states make all the difference in my experience, and I like NYC metro area people the best. Not a fan of ultra-liberal obnoxious Californians.. or slow-moving slow-talking, slow-everything southern people. Chicago area is colder than here, Florida is too humid. So I dunno... I loved living in Manhattan and my current plan is to try to retire back to the upper east side. But most buildings are co-ops and the maint fees are ludicrous... and you don't get much space. So, perhaps a brownstone in uptown Hoboken. Not sure yet.

My kids are 5 and 8 so that's part of the calculus too, grandkids one day etc. Was divorced about 3 years ago, and got out clean with zero financial burdens.. which I'm thankful for. Just dating chicks with the apps now... so not sure where life will take me. May get re-married, but may not. Marriage is a high risk proposal, especially if you have moderate to significant assets you bring to the table, and they do not.

Also, I like to joke that I have ants in my pants. I like to stay busy... and love the energy of cities. I can enjoy a tranquil setting, but for a vacation only to decompress. Need stimulation... so, for the same reason I'm not sure what I'd do in retirement. Travel of course, but probably I'll continue to do school business administrator work on an interim basis while collecting my pension. Another reason to stay in NJ.
Ants in your pants but want to live in a city? What do you do in spare time for recreation and entertainment?

For me, have to be near trails, water, rivers or beaches for outdoor activities, hiking, mountain biking, boating, etc.

My advice--- vote for people that are good for your investments--we have plenty of $ and 3 high end real estate properties .We spent a year trying to protect our assets/ inheritance so as to leave our kids plenty. Now??? With high inflation and a messed up economy , you " youngsters "should start worrying and we have traditional pension plans. Serps and 401ks that pay us very significant annual incomes. If you've got future years to recover ( like 10 to 20) less to be concerned about.
Individual Politicians have little to no impact on the economy and stock market. It’s been proven throughout history. The market conditions, global events and innovation are what drive those things.

Divorced and no financial burden? That’s like an oxymoron. Do share you divorce attorney.
I found this read interesting for those considering a second marriage. But as I read the article, I thought to myself- where is the love in love and marriage?

Retiring in September at 59. Already purchased our 2nd home in Hilton Head SC back in 2017 (a mile from the Ocean in one of the gated communities; property backs up to hole 3, and the clubhouse is 1/4 mile away). Glad we bought when we did as we would be priced out at this point as prices are up about 80%.

Our goal is to exercise year round and not sit in NJ from November to March staring out our picture window waiting for the weather to get better.

We will still have our home base in NJ, as our 3 adult kids are still here and we also plan to attend most RU games. It will probably be 1/3 SC and 2/3 NJ, but it could end up 50/50. HHI is great for golf, biking, kayaking, and the island is dog friendly (our dogs love the beach). Just watch out for the alligators. We bike everywhere, including my home course, food stores, home center, pickleball and tennis courts, shopping, beach, happy hours and dinner.

Maybe 7 yrs. or sooner. Wife wants for me sooner.

Will have no debt by then, we'll stay here in NJ on our farm. I completely melt in the heat, my people were built for the mountains, so no southern movement for me. All home renovations and farm projects will be done by then as well. So, it'll just be maintenance and grounds.

Like where I live, plenty of lakes around for fishing, 20 minutes to the beach, 40 mins. to Rutgers, NY and Philly day trips doable. Convenience of all the stores I need within 10 minutes. I'm someone who always forgets that one item so that's a big plus.

I really just want to putz around my farm that I built. If I want to do something for a couple hours, go right ahead, if I don't, tomorrows another day. Thinking about a motor home to see the country take off for a couple trips a year. Would really like to see the USA in person before I die.

We're expecting to retire in 4.5 years. Probably to the Carolinas, prob near the ocean because @MrsScrew needs to live within 40 minutes of an ocean for some reason. Maybe she was a whale in an earlier life.

I don't expect to never work again. I'd like to keep busy if I find something interesting to do. Not software or IT related. I'm D O N E with that crap.

I expect we'd travel and I'll play golf as long as my back holds out.
I live 10 minutes from downtown Wilmington, NC and 25 minutes to Wrightsville Beach. Been here 6 years and really like the area. Wilmington is a pretty cool little city and growing, good restaurants, bars, and music venues. Wrightsville is one of the nicer beaches south of OBX, sort of an LBI vibe.

Isn't inflation up all over the world?

I am sure there are all different kinds of political leaders with all kinds of economic policies but have any of them controlled inflation?

There are no free rides in life. NJ is expensive because people want to live here. It's also why the population keeps increasing.

If you want to live in bumblefudge where the schools are terrible, Chinese food is Panda Express, and the summer means constant hurricanes and 110 degrees, by all means.

I'll always take half the year here and maybe do a place like Costa Rica for the winter. That would be a rare example of more for less.

Plus it's Delaware. The place just seems soulless and has no identity.
+1
I know DE looks good on paper.....low taxes, close to NJ/family, but.....

You may want to consider SC for 6 months and 1 day. :)

Been thinking lately about retirement. If things pan out I have ~10-12 more years, if not it could be 18-20. What are everyone’s plans for retirement? Target age, destination, to do list, places you want to see/go, etc?

In a perfect world, I'd move out of NJ and down to Florida (Tallahassee), and also have a summer place in New England (coastal CT/RI, or Mass). From September - May, I'd really like to be active with FSU boosters, volunteer for worthy causes (Ukraine supplies, etc.), and attend many different sporting events (football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball for sure, and lacrosse, wrestling and men's soccer if they were ever added).

From June - August, I'd love to live up in New England on or near the coast, or on one of the lakes in Central Mass. Having a boat/wave runner would be great, and going to Red Sox games, eating quality seafood and grilling out / relaxing would be on the docuet.

I've been thinking about retirement since I was a kid as my grandparents moved down to Florida to retire, and we'd go down there for the summer. I don't really enjoy working, but wouldn't mind doing some consulting work or a low stress sales position while in retirement/semi-retirement.

What say you? What are everyone's plans? I always like to get input from this board, as many good ideas come across and it's interesting to see and hear everyone's perspectives.
My plan was to get out at 55. Retired 5 years ago at 58 . Stayed a few more years cause I got a new awesome Boss and really enjoyed my time until a sweet package came my way.

Spending winters down south. Different spots each year to determine where we will buy the condo to rent 1/2 year minus 1 day to establish residency in a zero tax state when RMDs kick in.

I always thought of doing something like this. Going to a warm weather location for the month of February.

Social Security tax free definitely, But isn't there a threshold based on other income where the 401k, rollover IRA etc. gets folded back in?
Nj tax law changed for 2021 where if you make under $100k retirement income is tax free. Under $125k you get 50% deduction. Under $150k is 25%. SS is not taxable in NJ so 2 people on SS could be making pretty good income with low taxes.
That was a pretty good play to help incent older folks to stay.

And who do you think create the those things? When a President created policy and law via EO he sure as hell impacts such. Your history is happening right in front of you.
Members of the house and Senate? No. Presidents, Fed. chair, Attorney general? 100% impactful.

She contributed heavily to her 401k while we were married while I plowed tons of money into renovating our home, that she still lives in. We split the equity in the house.

We made a deal where I wouldn't touch her 401k that she contributed to during the marriage, in return for me never paying child support. We split the monthly bills for the kiddos 50/50 instead. It still comes up to about $800 a month for 1/2 of daycare and aftercare, and haircuts, new shoes, sports fees etc etc. But it's fair, and not based on some BS child support calc that screws me if make money as I progress in my career.

And we made similar salaries at that time so there is no alimony.

The film industry is quite active in Wilmington, aka "Hollywood East" or "Willmywood." The largest production facility is Screen Gems, but many others. Your second career awaits....

I was in a Hollywood film back when I was in my 20s. I'm not interested in acting but maybe directing...

Yeah but prices in NJ are higher than average.

And property taxes are stupid. Especially if your kids are grown.

I like being able to walk out the front door and have tons of options within walking distance (or taxi). Some things that come to mind would be going to restaurants for dinner and drinks with family and friends, museums, central park, just exploring and people watching, sporting events, music shows... stuff like that. Could rent a car to hit the mountains for a hike or camping/fishing/canoeing, or beach/boardwalk for that experience. Airports nearby for distant travel.

City living is good exercise too... walking everywhere. I gained weight/fat when I moved out of the city years ago.

If I had started work a few months earlier, I would be looking at retiring at 55 after 25 years. But because I started work when I did, I’m looking at a 62/30. In other words, I’ll either have no pension or I’ll be dead by then.

Better have replacement income that's way up there-' 80% or more

I have a friend who just moved to Leland....any thoughts? Any towns to recommend in that area? We were originally thinking of SC but, with my first grandchild (in Lancaster, pa) on the way this summer being 14 hours away vs. 8 hours away in NC is much more appealing.

Not knocking ANYONE, but I read these forums…and sometimes wonder if people are really considering how much $$$ they will need for life , especially with people living much longer

A different take …and maybe this is the people I’m around and not what is true of the total populace

1People I see the healthiest and happiest in their senior ages are still living their same life they did as an adult, with a tapered professional schedule. And conversely, the people I know that retired earlier , weren’t so happy in retirement, and that affected their health , mentally and physically

For me…I’m going to life my life. That means keeping my professional going in full

I’ll know when The Time is here to back off … and to slow down

Until then …life , save for the future , and keep living some more ….

I’m 64 and planning to retire probably by year’s end. I’ve.been grinding a long time but retiring is a big decision for me. Financial security is one thing, but your identity in many ways becomes connected to your job. I’m about ready to do it. It’s expensive to live in NJ but there are good things as well. The worst thing for me is the horrific traffic and inconsiderate driving. Our family lives a rather modest life. I don’t have 2 houses and don’t need a new car every 3 years. Give me a bottle of wine and my guitars and I’m a happy camper.

I like having Morristown Memorial Hospital thirty minutes from my house and world class specialized health facilities in NYC. $$$$

Just a "head's up" regarding towns (including Leland) in and around the Cape Fear River Basin. "Google" Dupont/Chemours/Corteva and PFAS , Forever Chemicals, GenX. Lots of ongoing contamination of wells, groundwater, municipal systems, etc. Development continues despite this.

See:. https://ncpolicywatch.com/2021/10/2...s-pollution-but-task-is-massive-and-daunting/

Edit: I was just reminded of the LCP-Holtrachem Superfund Site adjacent to the Cape Fear River, Riegelwood, NC. From 1963 to 2000, the plant made chemicals such as sodium hydroxide, liquid chlorine, hydrogen gas, liquid bleach and hydrochloric acid using a mercury cell process, with discharges of metals, including mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The Riegelwood International Paper site is there as well.

Most transplants turn a blind eye to all this. Developers ignore it.

We’re in Leland as well, in Brunswick Forest, where is your friend? Places other than Leland to consider are Southport, really cool little town at the mouth of the Cape Fear river, but not much going on outside the town; Porters Neck, Hampstead which are north of Wilmington; several golf communities between Leland and Myrtle Beach.

I’d avoid MB, crowded and imo pretty Red Neck Riviera. Further south towards Hilton Head is Bluffton, lots of northerners there as well though obviously further away from NJ.

ILM, the Wilmington airport now has non stops to EWR, if that helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I'm not planning to sit on the couch in 5 years. I plan to stay active and continue to work - just at something more interesting and less time consuming. Maybe a golf course Ranger.

Also, we're planned out to 95 years old each.

Now we can't predict how life will go for the next 40 years but the odds of us both making that long are slim. If we were in a more "normal" financial environment we might be getting out earlier.
