West Orange, NJ native Joe Dooley is the head coach at FGCU, after a long stint as an assistant at Kansas. He has had a successful run so far. His current roster includes transfers from Tulane, UNLV, UCF, Pittsburgh, Central Connecticut State, Providence, Texas Tech, Michigan, and VCU (2). And an import from Latvia.

Results in a mature roster, a roster where the coach sort of knows what he has coming in when they arrive and after a year of practicing with the team and learning his system, and a roster of primarily well-defined role players.
And BTW ...
One point losers at Michigan State earlier this season without FGCU having its best player.
Much-traveled, ex-Rutgers assistant Tom Abatemarco is on Dooley's staff.

Here are somethings most of the kids who transfer to FGCU have in common:

1. They're Florida kids who came "home"
2. FGCU offered the kids early in their recruitment long before HM & MM programs jumped into the kids recruitment.
3. They monitor those kids freshman season & tells the key person in their recruitment that FGCU is interested if the kid decides to transfer

FGCU has a beautiful campus on the beach and Florida kids have had much success there -- whether they transfer there or enrolled there as Freshmen.

Dooley has taken good care of what Andy Enfield built and is ready to move on.

Tom Abatemarco...Bob Wenzel's recruiter at RU. Who would believe that he is still in coaching ?

I live nearby. I go to FGCU games. Rutgers might be helped adopting some of FGCU's roster building tact. Of course transfers would need to be higher caliber to compete in Big Ten.

Thats the issue. Many of the FGCU transfers thought they were better than FGCU. So when they were offered by B1G, BE, Big 12 & ACC schools they were like "See, the people who said I was low major were haters and Rivals was wrong for not ranking me a Top 100 four-star."

Then they got to those schools and didn't get the playing time they expected and transferred to the level they should have been at all along.

Is this legal?? and/or ethical??
Absolutely if you are talking to their old HS Coach or AAU Coach and letting them know that you'd be interested if the kid decides to transfer.

Absolutely not if you are contacting the kid or his family.

You might be surprised how many kids sitting on the bench regularly reach out to the assistant coaches of other schools that recruited them.

Thanks for the clarification.

Every time I hear Tom Abatamarco's name, I think of the old Knightline host from WCTC (Neal Solanz, I think) saying that he used to call into the show as "Mike from Milltown".

Sat in the first row behind the FGCU bench. A familiar name as the head coach of Kennesaw State -- Al Skinner. Skinner played at UMass with Julius Erving and Westwood, NJ's John Betancourt. FGCU's Brandon Goodwin, a UCF transfer, had a heck of a game last night. Middletown, NY's Kendrick Ray, a Quinnipiac transfer, at Kennesaw State was very solid, too. Both teams had St. Benedict's players on their roster -- James Scott at Kennesaw State, Kevin Mickle at FGCU.

The AD at BC couldn't wait to fire Skinner and they have been awful ever since.
