OT: SMU Stanford Cal to the ACC

Another crazy turn of events. Cal and Stanford made the only move available - they had to do this.

Wazzou and Oregon State will join the MWC (or possibly keep the PAC name).

The ACC may gain a new Saturday night time slot and now has a toehold in Texas and California (two top-ten media markets).

College sports got weirder.
At best smu is the 10th most popular team in Texas. At best…far far behind OU, A&M, UT, TT, BU, LSU, TCU, UH, Arkansas. Ou, Arky and LSU have more of their fans in Texas than SMU…not quite the toe-hold the acc would love to think it has here in Texas…not even close

An additional point of fun is that when the idea of Big 12 schools to the PAC was floated, Cal and Stanford were adamant they would not want a religious affiliated school in the mighty PAC…

Well well well, now they’re gonna have to come to Dallas and play Southern Methodist University 🤣🤣🤣🤣 there might even be a prayer at the beginning of the game…gasp!

That is so delicious it has to be fattening.

I posted a Mandel tweet above with more details. It will be likely around 20M and includes money excluding tier 1 media money.

Dallas also seems like it will be a crossroads to reduce travel and hold conference games for some sports.

I saw.
The whole point of conference realignment is to make MORE money per year

Now schools are moving to make LESS money just out of self preservation?
17m budget gap right off the start.

Let’s be honest here. No one in the B1G or SEC is going to be looking at Clemson, FSU, UNC, etc. and the massive grant of rights departure fees from the ACC and doing anything anytime soon. This addition lets the ACC stabilize and see what happens. With revenues going up and conferences consolidating there’s no guarantee the ACC won’t get a deal in proximity to what other leagues have gotten recently by the time the GOR is up.

So schools from either coast will have to uncomfortable meet in Dallas for some sort of “conference” tourney just to reduce travel (actually increase it for some)? I’m sure schools from the actual Atlantic coast will love to lose home games to placate the CA schools.

What a cluster!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

And don't forget the away games in South Bend with Touchdown Jesus blessing the proceedings from beyond the North end zone!

And a bit of irony. Sonny Dykes coached Cal, and he never really wanted to be there. Was he fired, or he left for SMU, where he did well close to home, and moved to TCU, where he got them to the CFP. Now the two ex-Dykes coached schools can duke it out for who's the better ex-Dyke.

Well they were always going to make less regardless because the new PAC deal wasn’t going to get them the same money. Don’t forget they also lost USC and UCLA. So it’s somewhat an apples and oranges comparison right off the bat comparing old tv deal numbers to new tv deal numbers.

At most they would’ve gotten 30M which is about what the B12 got. They turned that down and asked for 50M and that signed their warrant.

20M was what they would’ve got from Apple and that didn’t even subtract production costs. That probably won’t be as much as extra travel costs but they will get more exposure than they would on Apple TV.

Seems like a good portion of the money will go into the performance incentive pool where you will receive a higher share if you succeed on the field. How ironic would it be if SMU comes in and wins the conference every year and collects the extra cash.

The SEC and ACC are exclusively eSPIN Disney…both in significant decline…the brilliance of what the B1G pulled off is diversifying it’s rights across multiple platforms. That was genius. For better or worse the SEC and ACC are stuck with eSPIN. Could this get way better in the future? Maybe…?

Big made a mistake in not getting Cal and Stanford. Would have locked up west coast and the the schools to be associate with.

Oregon blew the academic likeness arguments. Wonder if Delany would have done it differently

SMU taking nothing might just prove the power of booster dollars when
running a college football program !!
I'm expecting to see some big NIL deals given to Mustang recruits once the dust settles.

Last night the UNC BoT came out with strong statements against expansion. Some took that to mean someone changed their vote out of UNC/Clemson/FSU/NC State. The rumor was that NC State changed its vote and so the ACC got the 12 of 15 needed to add SMU, Stanford, Cal
This is the beginning of the end for the ACC. It won't exist by the end of the decade. Look for the big boys to start jumping ship.

ACC will also get more TV sets due to distribution rights in Texas and California. To be honest, it doesn't really matter what SMU's fanbase looks like right now. They will get a pretty serious boost when they play FSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC, etc. at home -- and the TV money will flow to the rest of the ACC. Even playing BC and Wake is going to be a better deal interest wise than FAU and Charlotte, let's be honest here.

unlike the Big Ten Network, the ACC network is fully owned by ESPN so the conference doesn’t benefit from increased carriage the same way the B1G does.

They don’t have equity ownership but the profits are split too just like the BTN iirc. It’s probably 50-50

How is this better for Cal and Stanford at 30% revenue than trying to go to the Big 12? I realize the ACC schools on average have better academic profiles and may be more alike, but taking pennies on the dollar to travel coast to coast seems like a poor decision.

I wonder if adding more slices to the pie helps FSU and Clemson legally challenge the GOR.
It's been reported that the Big 12 decided it didn't want Cal and Stanford. https://www.si.com/college/stanford...sted-in-stanford-or-remaining-pac-12-programs

Keep in mind that expansion means that ESPN has to add to its payments to the ACC pro rata, and the money from not paying full shares immediately to the newcomers will be distributed in part on a performance basis. So FSU and Clemson will actually be doing better after expansion.

SMU, like Duke, might be "religious" but in reality, it's probably a less conservative school than say Texas A&M. SMU isn't like Baylor.

1) wrong…you clearly have not interacted much with SMU types…that is a very churchy conservative (albeit super wealthy bunch). 2) now cal and stanny have to be in a conference with the Methodists…

This. This is completely a move to pad their numbers so they can absorb losing teams in the future.
This is what I don’t understand. If this is the case why did they not add JMU and App State or USF & UConn instead of Cal and Stanford? Better atmospheres, more eyeballs, more fans in the stands, and WAY less travel for all sports. They added SMU so nothing about G5 vs P5

Dykes was a weird hire. They had a little success under him one year, but lost nearly every game against Cal, USC and UCLA. His Cal teams had great offenses and horrifically bad defenses. I recall one game where they gave up 700 yards passing to Wazzou.

Religious school battles: ACC (Notre Dame, SMU) versus Big 12 (TCU, Baylor, BYU). Reuniting BYU and Utah returns the Holy War to traditional rivalry games.

Duke and Wake started as religious schools - as was Rutgers, but are no longer so.

These things can take time, and with Rutgers, it was 1 step up and 10 steps back under the end of the Flood tenure and then Ash.
It's not them, it's the administration and bot. None have long term visions or goals, no plan. All of this should force a reset, redress, and meeting of the minds. We could be cal and Stanford

Anyone who doesn't understand that athletics drives more than just seats is a damn fool. Kiffin said it best

Didn't RU experience a significant spike in student applications in 2006? Wonder what happened that year. :)

I’d love an explanation as to how this makes any financial sense…this move seems like a textbook definition of desperation…they literally had no better option that this weird, awkward geographic cluster and it somehow made sense.

Remarkable state of affairs.

Parenthetically; how lucky is Rutgers?!?
Parenthetically? Very nice .

So those schools went straight? I thought one was born that way. LOL

Once the ACC implodes, or the cherry-picking of it begins in a few years, Cal and Stanford will be there for the taking again by the B1G. They would jump ship in a heartbeat if the opportunity presents itself to be with 4 West Coast former members. They don’t bring enough value for that to matter right now. Unfortunately, I don’t think they will improve in the ACC to be any more valuable to the B1G…unless Stanford can entice ND to join…which I doubt.
