OT: The Sunshields and the Mirrors on the James Webb Space Telescope Have Been Successfully Deployed

I can’t wait for what the JWST has in store for us , new discoveries from the farthest corners of space, I’m sure there will be discoveries that won’t be shared which will be unfortunate but anything new and exciting is a gift.

Why would they be discoveries not shared?

Maybe not in the long run. Remember how much maintenance Hubble needed. No maint. is scheduled for the Webb. I'll bet Elon could send a Starship out there if needed.

Great news so far.

Elon can't do jack shit. He's in the launch/lift business. Doesn't know anything about missions.

Humans will never live anywhere but Earth. The future of space exploration is robotic/uncrewed, just like almost all of our great space exploration achievements to this point. I'm very excited for Europa Clipper.

SpaceX has already brought and returned astronauts to the ISS. They've also put 4 civilians into orbit and safety returned them to Earth. These aren't missions? All at roughly 1/10th the cost of any other aerospace company or country. Guess you haven't heard about landing orbital rocket boosters or Starship either.

I always chuckle when I hear folks who haven't worked in the industry make bold statements like this ... Why doesn't Webb have cameras? Why don't we just fly to Webb and fix it? These are the same folks who then go NASA hasn't done crap since the 60s

Lots to unravel with a trip to L2 ... human psychology, ECLSS systems that are closed loop, radiation protection, mission redundancy plans that have never been thought of, let alone tested ... just the tip of the iceberg there ... what are they going to do when they get there? Was the hardware designed to be attended by crew? Are there handholds on the telescope? What's our MMOD model predict? Are we going untethered?

I'm a fan of SpaceX and exploration in general, and perfectly fine to dream ... heck I think Elon can be the one to make bold statements such as getting to Mars with his Red Dragon by 2022 ... He understands what it takes, the systems, and likely makes these statements to motivate himself and his workers

Chuckle away. If SpaceX gets the Starship up and running L2 is much closer than Mars. I suspect they'd be able to get some bodies over there. Rad mitigation, psych, ECLSS and the rest of the robustness requirements are included in design of the SpaceX Mars mission. So either they have them, have plans for them, or can start from scratch to have them meet any additional needs presented by L2. If it can be and needs to be fixed Webb will be sitting there for a while til they get their ducks in a row. (Yeah if station keeping is off line it would likely be lost - but you NASA experts are more then broken lens kinda guys ; ) )

As to if the Webb has serviceable parts or handholds well now we're back to NASA sucking since the 60's aren't we?

Funny I always get a chuckle out of experts who say something can't be done and drop acronyms to impress their audience.

You realize their crapper for Dragon was leaking shit the last mission, right? And you want to do a 30+ day mission, which likely means 60 days of consumables LOLZ

Exactly what's wrong with America ... Let's totally ignore the person who's worked with SpaceX's passive docking system, who's worked ELCSS for many years and has numerous friends who work SpaceX ECLSS (& other subsystems) & Paragon ECLSS architecture. Let's ignore the guy who's done MMOD testing at JSC & University of Dayton Research Institute for SpaceX test articles. Let's ignore the guy who's done business development and chose Falcon Heavy as part of proposal. Let's ignore the guy who developed some of the requirements for the HLS bid from the competitor (yes we lost, and yes it was embarrassing)

Instead let's listen to the guy who's never worked on a crewed mission before let alone the industry! I imagine, surely he knows way more!! In fact, I think you should be the Chief Engineer, sounds like you know more than some of those employees and actually let's get rid of Elon and put you on top!

EDIT: Took a screenshot of your post and sent it to my buddy at spacex ... shall see his response lol

I have been there already that is why I believe giddiness over some satellite panels opening is not an earth shattering thing. You have little understanding except what you deem important. As a world we have much more important issues. Nice to have space travel but even landing on Mars in 2022-23-24 means nothing . Worry about the fact that several questionable opponents have just passed us by if the reports are true. Why some were worrying about going to explore Mars others said , “ hey let’s push the buttons and see if we can do both.” Get to the planets faster and also be a super power larger than the US. Maybe even an axis of power. I was in class May 5, 1961 age 11 and was able to watch the launch live in class. Every classroom of our had a tv for classes in math , language Spanish and French . It was exciting then and perhaps now for some. Most people in the USA don’t care … they would rather feel secure and not be worrying about NK, Iran, Russia and China having Hypersonic missile capabilities especially when we still are just breaching the field. I love space exploration and the next time I go to the colony beneath Catalina Island I’ll invite you along. You’ll enjoy the the journey.

um...

May I direct you to the Electric Vehicle thread?

LOL. Let me know when they're not throwing away $10B in taxpayer dollars per launch.
closer to 4, depending on whose math you use...

still cheaper than an Apollo landing (inflation adjusted)...... or should we just spend it all on healthcare for illegals instead?

given other options... money well spent compared to other things...

Lighting $4B on fire for a rocket that is obsolete before it's first launch is criminal.

So they aren't going to Mars then? Or are you just hammering a straw man here? Because once Mars is an option so too will L2 be. Show me where I said it's going to happen tomorrow.

I'm not ignoring what you say. But you're very busy arguing against things I haven't said.

I'm not real impressed with the work you're doing here. But you sure seem to be - and you got to drop you resume. Good for you.

So to summarize your expert opinion - SpaceX cannot get to L2 - ever. And I'm an idiot to suggest it. Gotcha . Shitter broke in 2021 so no one's ever getting there? Let me know what your SpaceX friend has to say about that.

Humans just can't grasp... the inter-dimensional Multiverse is full of other civilizations.. they just don't think we are cool enough to hang out with..
I can assure that there are several civilizations now and have been on this planet for several thousand years. The one we should be very serious about is lying 3 miles under California ’s Catalina Island . They have offered to help us going forward but thus far our scientific brethren have failed to act upon this gesture. May be time to send the V.P. To layout a plan.

You're... you're just f*ckin' with us, right?

Hell no buddy the subject of extraterrestrials being here and space travel ( which many laugh and ridicule) is closer than you think. Why would I f’ ck with you. As we speak a war is being waged in a far off place outside our solar system. . At the right time this war and it’s combatants will emerge in the planetary system we call our home. The telescope will bring this into view very clearly .

As someone pointed out previously the Multiverse is real and has been in existence for over 200 million years . Located in the Paradigm sector of the Fornax Galaxy. Remember there are over 10,000 galaxies known to us. Enjoy whatever time is remaining live everyday to the fullest.

@DanceAppreciationTA I'll bet you get paid by NASA and still have a bug up your ass from when I posted they weren't 1960s NASA anymore.

I remember that post - that must have been you taking exception, right? LOL

I never worked for NASA directly, but everyone in that industry is funded by them one way or another. I was paid by a defense contractor ( you can prob tell which one with my experience and also my distaste in some of their programs) and then moved onto a private company later. I work in the energy/consulting field now.

It just bugs me when people talk about stuff that they have not experienced. And no I'm not saying SpaceX will NEVER be able to take Starship to Webb ... but right now its just not feasible and some of it has not even been properly designed yet. Space is complex ... why do you think SpaceX buys million dollar valves ... so much testing. requirements, redundancy behind it. It's not as easy as ... well we have a powerful rocket, just change trajectory to Webb and send some astronauts out in their units.

It's the equivalent of saying the Rutgers Basketball or Football team will win the NCAA championship ... yes it's possible and the foundation is being put in, but there is so much unknown intermediate work that needs to be accomplished before even thinking about the championship.

Also, I just get really frustrated in general with everyone these days ... especially when it comes to generalizations ... somehow we've decided (myself included at times) that we're all experts in everything and that 140 characters or a sentence or two can summarize complex situations. And if someone has first hand experience in a specific subject and they disagree with your thesis, then that person is automatically deceitful or has some hidden agenda

You're a reasonable man. I retract anything that was interpreted as an insult. I think we may have been talking past each other a bit as well.

Bleem : There are no Mermaids nor Mermen. Those terms relating to specific genders were eliminated after the galactic purge almost 50 million years ago. The changes made created a diverse grouping amongst the Novadian counter groups . It now appears we of earth are on a similar journey . Always knew there was life far and beyond . Much of our world developed only because of these visitors. Elon is well aware of their existence.

Interesting.

Is there a religious construct that accompanies this belief? Are there relevant holidays?

Probably, my apologies! I should have handled this better, thanks for the back and forth ... Go Rutgers!

Me too.

If you are asking about an organized religion as we know it no , however there is no need to have a multitude of religions but a Supreme Diety or God does exist. There is only ONE Creator though many doubt HE is the creator of all things. Some call it an energy source , others call it pure love and still others think it’s all due to a natural process of evolution. If you do travel and visit the sub oceanic settlement under Catalina Island you will definitely have a greater understanding of the reasons life itself exists.

Awesome. Do you guys have any swag? Is there a t-shirt I can get? Is there a possibility that, under this new belief system, @Jm0513 has already succumbed to my charms and is currently cooking me dinner?

Sorry but T shirts on a “jelly fish type creature “ is not useful. There are 4 levels in order to enter into what some call Paradise in earth type religions. The same premise though does exist in order to achieve Paradise . If that be a goal of yours? You could go to a print store and create your own design. Meanwhile looking through history you will still see this was always recognizable.

Damn, I haven't heard stuff like that since we got buzzed with a kid named Astroboy back in the Sixties.
Peyote buds I'm guessing....right ?

I see you've met my wife.
BTW, I don't think she likes the word "Supreme" for some reason.

Do I get any days off work for believing in this shit?
