OT: Things in sports that need to disappear

Basketball:
Allowing timeouts for some player lying on the ground with the ball.
A jump ball when a bad shot is wedged between the rim and the glass. That should go to the defense.

Overuse of the word physicality

OMG so true - a guy jumps 2 feet to catch a ball and TV guys gush over it like it was witnessing moon landing

Starting Weso Coast games with East Coast teams on the weekend late at night. Stupid to have a Saturday night game like the Mets at SD starting at 10:30est. And start the Friday night game at 9:30est.

Underrated comment. If you miss a shot, it shouldn’t come down to a 50/50 luck of the draw situation.

- Chip in the football to measure first downs or TDs (I'd like to say that i would want that, even if I wasn't a Bills fan)
- The ghost runner on 2nd base in extra innings. Play the game it was designed to be played; maybe put a runner on first starting in the 12th if you had to
- Sports gambling commercials. They must make up a third of commercials and prey on people who are poor or have an addictive personality.
- NIL (the way it has played out). The intent of it was good, and the other extreme wasn't fair. Major changes need to be made to curb the ridiculousness that we're seeing.

The US banned TV advertisements for cigarettes and should also do it for sports gambling. If you smoke you're ruining your own life while sports gambling addiction has a wider ruinous effect.

Not a bad list.
Ghost runner is particularly stupid.

- Fans at golf tournaments yelling "GET IN THE HOLE", "MASHED POTATOS", "BABBABOOEY" etc after a shot. That stopped being humorous 15 years ago.

- Stoppage time in soccer. Seriously... every other timed sport has figured out how to start and stop the game clock without it being a hidden secret known only to the refs

- The need for every MLB pitcher to throw 100 mph. Its a shame that if Greg Maddux was a senior in HS or college, he wouldn't have a single scout watching him.

- Anticipated fouls in basketball. Simple concept for refs... wait until you actually see contact before blowing the whistle.

- "Load management" in the NBA.

- In game interviews with coaches. Nothing of value comes out of them.

What else?
The offside rule in soccer once the ball is past the top of the penalty box area.
3 hour pre game shows that tell u little
Two minute warning in college football
Stupid kickoff formation in NFL

How about the targeting rule in college football ? No one really seems to know what it is and they actually eject players on terribile calls. I mean it’s one thing to live with a bad call, but a bad ejection?? Happened to us in the MSU game in 23

This a good thread. Lots of great ideas in here already.
My opinions…
-Baseball games in April and October/November. 162 game season is crazy too much. (I know I know, purists gnashing their teeth at that). First game 1st Friday in May, last regular season game on 8/31. 100 games? Playoffs don’t stretch past 9/30.
-Baseball. Too many strikeouts and home runs. Need more action in the game and mlb knows it!
-Football. Too long play clock. Play clock should actually be 10-15 seconds shorter. I often watch on dvr and can usually fast forward 30 seconds (2 clicks) after every play and miss nothing except some chatter.
-Baseball. No salary cap.
-College sports. No salary/NIL cap. I know it’s hard to figure out but it’s literally impossible to regularly compete against the outsized budget schools (just like in mlb).
-Football. Tv timeouts that are 3+ minutes.
-Football. Kickoff. Sorry, I used to love the kickoff but that play is pretty much meaningless anymore.
-Penn State athletics.
Purists can't talk about 162 game season. At one point, it was 154 games so it has been changed.

Related to targeting - I don't like the stat for "QB hits" because it encourages late and sloppy hits. I constantly see guys hitting QBs when they know ball is out. Defenders often finish their waning rushes with a launch of some kind. QB hits is a dumb stat all leagues should drop

I always wondered — why do the fans/spectators have to be quiet when players are preparing to serve in tennis or hit a golf shot, but can yell and scream when someone shooting a free throw or there’s two strikes on a batter? Don’t the athletes in all the scenarios need to concentrate?

I think the team vs individual dynamic I’d important here. Trying to help your team beat the other team? Good. Trying to screw over one athlete in an individual event? Bad.

Constant piped in loud arena and stadium music. I didn't buy tickets to a concert, I bought them to a sporting event. I would like to see the sights, traditions and sounds of that. Not some DJ, I don't know when they decided this was en vogue but I can't stand it.
Amen.

Agreed. While I support having the freedom to gamble if one chooses to, there is more of a social detriment to those commercials than meets the eye. It's bad enough to have to listen to the reads of the ads, maybe it's possible to limit the scope of how often this is in your face.

1) The 17 game NFL season.
2) 5 minute referee huddles for false starts.
3) Letting some OTs line up offsides.
4) Discussions of point spreads and gambling odds in place of actual analysis of games.
5) Loudmouthed hot take sports show bullshit.

How does an initial football 1st down spotted? Does the chain gang measure the initial spot? I have never seen the initial spot measured by the chain gang.

My point being, if the initial 1st down spot is not measured then doesn't that make the final measurement bogus?
Yes! This one is crazy to me. I'm shocked that the spot doesn't get argued, reviewed, automated more than it does (unless it does and I'm just not paying attention). In a "game of inches" they just leave the actual placement of the ball up to the ref's judgement without much question?

Was actually done on NBC in 1980. Jets/Dolphins had more field mics and the PA gave a little more info than usual but no TV announcers.

They did this back in the day for a Devils game when they were on SportsChannel. The main game was on SportsChannel and an alt telecast with no play by play, and more mics close to the ice was on SportsChannel Plus. They even had a disclaimer saying that occasionally inappropriate language might be heard. I was probably 11 or 12 at the time and it was the coolest. I only saw it the one time so it didn't stick, but man was it a cool way to watch the game.

Gambling
Useless predictions
Super Bowl should be played on Saturday not sunday
MLB season way too long
