OT - Top Bars in NJ

No it's now protected wet lands.

You may be thinking of Harrigans which is about 1/4-1/2 mile south.

Yes that is the one. You are correct.

Route 71 is just a blur of 7-11s to me these days (with a crucial Surf Taco and Cielito Lindo area).

Haha, met my wife in Lucky 7, guess I was lucky that day.
But can she say the same? LOL

Bar A is something for everyone. It's a decent restaurant and the front bar is a nice local atmosphere during the day/happy hour/ most weeknights.
Very true.

Reggie does a great fundraising business for a lot of area schools and organizations.

Yeah but Parker House is very much alive :sunglasses:
We have had this discussion before but to quote Claus Von Bulow....you have no idea. LOL

Did you ever get to the Patio Bar in Pt. Beach as I suggested?

Properly known as South Belmar and a reminder of when Bar A wasn't even the best bar in that town.

I remember still a friend calling in sick from the pay phone in the bathroom yelling "sick" as loud as he could because his boss at the New Brunswick sheriffs office couldn't hear him as the turtle races raged outside.
Also true.

Back in the 90s if you left the Parker House having one to many and dared get into your car and drive...you could save a lot of time by driving directly to the police station and turning yourself in.
The odds of getting to wherever you were staying without being pulled over were low.
And if you were local sometimes you could even get a ride home...or so I have heard. LOL

I know several married couple that met at the pool bar...lol
Lots. And after happy hour they ended up at the Parker House.

We used to spend the night at the Osprey or Leggetts then around 1:30 pile in a car to drive to Jimmy Byrnes because it was open till 3:00. You'd never think about doing that now.

In the mid 70's I had a room upstairs at the Parker House and worked a few fill in shifts behind the bar downstairs. Fun times.
Man, if I knew you and @zappaa way back then there is no way I would have been able to keep up.
The amount of people crammed into was just crazy. A fire in that place would have been catastrophic- not that it ever entered my mind when I used to go there.
Very true.

You used to need a "resident permit" if you lived on Beacon Blvd. Even few years after it shut its doors for good. I had to get one.

Where was Jimmy Byrnes?
Right on 71 across from Beacon Blvd. Jimmy Byrne's at one end of Beacon with the Parker House at the other...not too shabby. ;)

And I always referred to it as the Warren and not the Pool Bar.

I thought the turtle races were at Mary's Husbands and not Bar A?

NIRH
Parking at Jimmy Burns was like arriving at the Green lot at Rutgers Stadiun, you were directed to your parking spot by a guy in an orange vest and flash light.

Yeah but I don't think I was there at the right time. I have been to many of the more local spots over the years as I know some people there full time, so I get the atmosphere though.

I cannot imagine Sea Girt being accommodating to another bar, though. I think there are more cops outside there weekend summers than there are outside big subway stations, although I find them to be nicer than some of the others. They will direct people to the Uber pickup and forgave my friend who left the taxi with a cup full of...juice...

You know what we should do, we should make the Scarlet Nation top bars in NJ. Everyone list the top 5 and we will see who gets the most votes. First we need to split the state up though. For example I feel I can give an expert opinion of the bars in Morris/Sussex but I never walked in a bar in Cumberland county in my life so they shouldn't be penalized. Maybe the categories should be Northwest (Morris/Sussex/Warren/Western Passaic), Around NYC (Eastern Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Union), Around Rutgers (Middlesex/Somerset) West Jersey (Hunderton/Mercer), Around Philly (Western Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem), Northern Shore (Monmouth/Ocean), Southern Shore(Eastern Burlington, Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland). So I would do: Category:Northwest NJ, Top 5 1)Pub 199 (Mt Arlington), 2)The Famished Frog (Morristown) 3)Thatcher McGees (Denville) 4)Kroughs (Sparta), 5)Taphouse 15 (Jefferson)- On a side note I like Gatwins better in Jefferson but Taphouse 15 is so so much more popular, same thing with the Village Saloon and Kroughs in Sparta
Love Kroghs (Sparta), San Moritz (Sparta), Village Saloon (Sparta) and Gatwyns (Jefferson) Pub 519 (also great steaks and lobster) (Tranquillity). Vote to skip Taphouse 15

Maybe not in the vicinity, but you never know....I could see something closer to the tracks in town and/or 71 someday. No way by the beach though.

I didn't hear a mention from @zappaa , @knightfan7 or any of the others in the thread about the old Sand Bar in the basement of the Yankee Clipper. That was fun.

Surprised to hear that about the Patio Bar.

So many great places in this thread. For my money the South Monmouth North Ocean bar scene was the greatest. From the Parker House to The Sand Bar at the Brielle Yacht Club, Union Landing, O'neils in Manasquan and all of the others in this thread. Taking the water taxi from the Patio Bar to Clarks landing then to The Sand Bar and Union Landing was always great fun.
However, for my money The Pool Bar at the Warren was hands down, one of the Best Jersey shore spots ever. Sunday afternoons were unbelievable. Immense amounts of talent and always a great time! Its criminal that places like that and the Bluffs are gone. They were everything that was great about the Jersey shore nightlife.

+1

I missed a good summer one year while still in school because I decided to hang out in NB at my fraternity house instead of listening to my Dad about the Warren. At 87 he still shakes his head and laughs at me when the topic comes up.

One of the cool things I always found about the place was the age difference as you went from the building itself towards Ocean Avenue. The old people (like really old - wheelchairs) were near the hotel and you had strollers by the curb.

I may have been to the Yankee Clipper once or twice. Leggetts, Osprey, Parker House (was called the Sea Girt Ale House back then), Jimmy Byrnes, D'Jais happy hour, and Royal Manor were the hangouts.

Quick story about Sea Girt. When the new owners took over the Parker House in '74 or '75 they got a lot of heat from the local officials probably because they themselves weren't local. They wouldn't let them serve on the porch or use the small bar they had installed by the main entrance.

The day they reopened after gutting and remodeling the 1st floor, they invited anyone in town who had any authority on their dime. Wined and dined the hell out of them. Closing time was 1am back then and the last people had left by 12:45. At 1:01 the police showed up to make sure no one was still drinking. It was a very rocky relationship for many years.
