OT: Why are the B52's not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I googled why the smashing pumpkins aren’t in. 1. The hall of fame is biased against rock bands of that era. Which is odd since that era saved rock music from what it morphed into during the 80s. 2. They don’t agree with billy corgans personal politics. So there’s that.

No idea why phish isn’t in. That makes no sense.

Most people cannot name a single Phish song. Huge fan of rock and roll, and I was able to name a song (probably several ) from every artist not into the RRHOF that is eligible. One platinum album (their first one). Not a single song in the top 20.
Not picking on them, but they don't seem to move the needle.

I liked the B52s but their resume is pretty thin. They did have a distinctive sound and presentation. I’d probably vote them in but it’d be borderline.

The Go-Gos getting in while Pat Benetar is still on the outside looking in is a complete joke. Benetar and Chrissy Hynde were both iconic front women for the early MTV era bands and both deserved to get in rather than just the Prentenders. Most people assume PB is already there.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Hynde had a solo career. And I believe Mick Jagger only got in with the Rolling Stones. If I'm right, why should she get in other than with The Pretenders?

I’m somewhat familiar with Phish. Im not big on labels and all the ridiculous sub genres of music now, but Phish generally falls under the “jam band” label. The difference with a group like the Allman Bros. , who helped form that ”sub genre” is they had a number of great 4 minute songs even though they didn’t like to play them live for 4 minutes. Add in a terrific soul singer and that explains things. The “jam bands“ are not for everyone, but I’m a fan. I like very good musicianship and band’s that can extend and play with taste and finesse.

Here is a clue...Bon Jovi has sold 130 million records, has 4 #1 songs, and 19 top 40 songs.

Not an awful resume for a shitty band.
Selling a lot of crap is not proof of talent - just popularity. However it's the RnRHOF, they don't require talent.

Black Flag? Bad Brains? MOTORHEAD? as better than the B52s? Surely you jest.
Who said better? And that is a matter of preference.
I'm guessing you saw none of those bands live. I saw Motorhead in 1990 and Bad Brains when they were much older. If you knew how much each of those bands influenced legions of other artists, maybe you would see it differently.
I never said the B52s were not deserving. It's just they are way behind other bands who have been waiting longer. You keep it up, and I'm going to bring my Mets and Braves buddies into the Phillies thread.

Just was never into those bands and was being controversial. Carry on. ; )

Ah badly worded on my part. They both deserve to get in as front ladies, one as a solo, one as a front vocal as part of a band. I was using CH as a similar performer as Pat Benetar, i.e., woman lead vocalists. CH got in with Prentenders but her contemporary, PB did not get in. I think they both had similar impact to the industry as females in Rock And Roll at the start of the MTV era.

BTW: I’m not a big PB fan but in my mind there is no denying her impact.

Phish are great. But, like many bands I like, I cannot actually recall the name of any of their songs.

I suck at remembering song names, band names, people names, etc. I couldn't tell you the artist or song name of well more than half the songs in my Spotify or Tidal collections.

Play the music and I can hum along with it - that I can remember, often in great detail. But the names... fuhgeddaboutit.

The Pretenders past 1984 was basically Chrissie Hynde, it wouldnt make sense to put her in solo

this is my fave by them

It actually was the first single off of Cosmic Thing and hit #1 on the modern rock/alternative charts in 1989

The lead singer Fred Schneider is originally from New Jersey. He came out with a Dr. Demento classic in the 80's Monster.

I am very close with someone who is a huge fan of the B-52's since Cosmic Thing. I must say I am surprised, this thread has been so popular.

nostalgia probably. Many of us were teenagers in the 80s some were teens when they first came out in the 70s

everyone loves the B 52s
For years I didn't really. My sister is a big fan. With the way music has sucked mostly for 20 + years, funny they don't sound that bad to me anymore. I am more hard rock, but listen to everything, depending on my mood.

I was the annoying little brother. I did buy much of her collection. She has everything. They harmonize great. I think my favorite of theirs is Revolution Earth. However they have many Good songs. I had to laugh at that 2 hits comment. They had more than 2 hits on Cosmic Thing. Oh well Roam if you want to, I guess.

The list seems endless. The only reason we don't hear about it more is, many people just assume many are in that aren't. I doubt they ever get in but on my personal list, Gin Blossoms, Garbage, RATT, and Cinderella. I am not listing anyone who I have seen menitioned. I may have missed a few posts though.

How is Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Tool, INXS, Violent femmes not already in? Is there a better Rock n Roll Hall of fame where these artists are in?

B52's had there 1 hit wonder and can be left out.

2 Top 3 singles, 4 top 30 singles.

Hardly a one hit wonder.

Just some of the more popular B-52 hits over the years:

Rock Lobster
Private Idaho
Love Shack
Roam
Deadbeat Club
Good Stuff
Planet Claire
Channel Z

Given who has gotten in already that shouldn't have, here is a list of some of the many that should get in, in no order.
Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, and Accept.
I listen to Megadeth and Anthrax. As a Christian, I'm not a fan of Slayer, however do like Seasons in the Abyss. These artists with Metallica did a lot for thrash/speed metal. Accept- Balls to the Wall, had another song Fast as a Shark that is widely considered a step toward extreme metal.
Scorpions, Motley Crue, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Dokken, and even Poison should be in. Again given some of the ones in, I could name alot more. I kept out bands in my previous threads. All have had longevity and sold millions of albums.
I will close with acts from or after the 90's. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, Pantera, and Korn. I could add so many others but I will stop here. I don't want to be up all night.

The thing I love about the B-52’s is their music was just fun to listen to music! No over arching political messages just fun music singing about silly things. Rock lobsters, devils in my car, living in Your own private Idaho, A dog named Quicche Lorraine, making love under a Strobe Light. Their album Wild Planet will always be one of my favorites because it was one of my “coming of age” albums. Just good, fun music.

First in line: Gordon Lightfoot. Top 25 all time. He may straddle several genres, but so do many others already in.
I agree, Lightfoot was one of my favorite singers back in the 70s , early 80s. Back in those days, he was considered “rock” as were most musical acts. From Jim Croce , James Taylor, Carol King to America, Steely Dan to Deep Purple , Led Zeppelin. It was all rock. I don’t think the rise of all the musical labels, sub genres has helped the overall quality of music.
