Figured w/the Nations League games yesterday and two disappointing results (USA losing to Canada and Italy losing to Germany), we'd turn the page and focus on the 2026 World Cup.
Qualification starts soon and the games begin next summer

I really wanted to the USA and Italy both play, but can't see spending the money for the US unless they dramatically turn things around
Re. Italy, they better make the damn tournament this time - missing it twice in a row is nauseating on every conceivable level

Still might go to the US game vs. Turkey in Hartford - but after the past 2 matches, the motivation to do so has dwindled dramatically
Re. the World Cup - anyone planning on going?

I’ll be going. Don’t really care which games. Eyeing Toronto and Philly. US team stinks. Uninspired soccer the past two games.

The club World Cup is happening in the US in June. That should be good soccer.
The club World Cup should be pretty good, some interesting matches at both Met Life and Lincoln financial

Will definitely try to go to any of the matches here in Atl. Probably group stages as I imagine the semi-final ticket prices will be ridiculous and hard to come by, just the same.

Want to see France and Spain so will try to plan travel around that. For club world cup I have tickets to see Bayern Munich in Cincinnati (where I live). Kids want to see Man City so we may try to make that happen depending on how far they go and where they play.

I attended four matches in Palo Alto ‘94: Brazil-Russia, Brazil-Cameroon, USA-Brazil and Romania-Sweden. Fantastic experience. I’ll try to attend at least one match next year, but haven’t even tried to purchase tickets yet. I think I’ll be more excited when the specific matchups with dates and venues are known.

I saw Germany vs. Bulgaria at Giants Stadium in '94. Obviously not happy with the result, but it was cool to get to a WC match. Had good seats too. The Club WC might be fun to check out this summer.

I may head out to Cincy to see BVB play. It’s cool that they put all the German clubs in Cincy with the big German population there. Or so I’ve heard bc I’ve never been to Cincy.

Maybe you can get in a Reds game too. Supposed to be a nice park.

Cincy is a great sports town.

Ticket prices are insane out here - at least the last I checked.

Enjoy the time here. Covington,KY is just across the River and also lots of fun.

Not sure how exactly they will do ticketing,

But I am going to aim for Philly, Boston, and Metlife.

How did everyone get tickets last time and I wonder if it's still the same this time (lottery, Ticketmaster, mix of both)?

I went to Mexico-Bulgaria in 94 at Giants Stadium, buddy's dad got the tickets through work and we sat ~10th row lower level, pretty cool. Pre-match we went to some party and saw Christine Whitman there - game was great and that was the first time I saw Mexican fans in person.

Quite a site to behold

The party scene during WC matches was as incredible as being in the seats for a match. One example - I was going to see Brazil-Cameroon at Stanford Stadium and decided to arrive early to Palo Alto for some early drinking and eating. My buddy and I went to a downtown sports bar to catch some of the Mexico-Ireland match - this was well before 10 AM. The place was so packed we couldn’t get in - there were dozens of drunk-ass Irish fans standing on the tables singing and crying (Mexico won that match). The atmosphere inside the bar and on the street was tremendous. Downtown Palo Alto was like Bourbon Street.

So we then decided to go a smallish super market across the street from Stanford Stadium to get some beer and munchies. We knew the day was going to be utterly insane when the market was stuffed with hundreds of partying Brazilllians, including some Braziilan beer models doing a PR event right outside the market.

My friend and I walk to the back of the store, get the beer and stand in one of the longest and most dysfunctional checkout lines I’ve even been a part of. Brazilian fans all dressed in the familiar greens and yellows were everywhere Boomboxes blasting samba from all directions, dozens smoking and sharing grass, eveyone drinking, most everyone is dancing- and this is just the checkout line.

Well, my buddy and I were on the checkout line for over and hour, drank all the beer, partied and had a great old time. The line never moved. It did not matter - everyone was having a great time getting wasted in a checkout line. We stumbled out of the market without paying and it was only like 11 AM.

Hearing that single tickets in upper tiers of stadiums will be $300+ each. Not sure how that translates through all 3 countries.

Yea I might also try to get to a Dortmund match if we're in town. Also seeing pretty good ticket prices for the RB Salzburg match (why not if they're in town and prices are right). TQL Stadium is a great venue. Area near the stadium (Over the Rhine) has lots of bars/restaurants and is a really great environment on match days.

As an aside Dortmund plays the 21st and 25th in Cincinnati. Yankees are in town for a series the 23rd - 25th

I am going to enter the lottery with buddies of mine and just hope for the best. If we get tickets to any of the games, we'll fly to where we get them and have a good time. Not going to overthink or over plan it.

MetLife, Philly, and Gillette near Boston, I'll be at 2026 World Cup games in these stadiums.

In 1994, I lucked out because my aunt with no kids was a Gillette marketing exec in Boston and had tix to all the Foxboro games. I got all the tix. Had people drive me to stadium. Best was Argentina 2 Nigeria 1. Weirdest was Bolivia South Korea 0-0. Flotilla of Bolivians on highway to game, never seen anything like that.

FIFA designated Stockton University, 115 miles from MetLife, as a base camp for 2026. Why isn't Rutgers in the mix to be a 2026 World Cup base camp?

On Wednesday, Richie was asked about Rutgers 2026 World Cup efforts. The university nailed it in 1994. Here is the post:

FIFA is selecting training base camp locations for the 2026 World Cup. I was surprised to see Stockton University was selected as a New York/New Jersey (MetLife) training base even though it is located 115 miles from the stadium.

FIFA says it will announce another batch of of World Cup training locations this year. Is the Rutgers athletics department working to get Rutgers selected as a FIFA sanctioned training base?

I think Italy trained at the Pingry School that year.
