Paul Mulcahy UNREAL STATS

Best player is Myles.
He creates mismatches, passes, rebounds, scores, blocks, and plays within himself.

And that takes nothing away from rhj or paul, who are each fine players.

And Paul was critical for to team last night and will be going forward.

Great job OP!

Paul Mulcahy single handedly kept us in the game for about 10 mins in the first half.

He did so many little things that dont always show up on the stat sheet...wow...I LOVE this kid...

Yes!!!! Well said sir

Agree with everything in this thread. It was Mulcahy giving us confidence and keeping the team alive in the first half, and youngs energy and exceptional talent in the 2nd half that blew the roof off

I love his game. He did have a couple of opportunities to shoot last night that he will have to take to continue his progression. He hit his foul shots. Makes the other players, especially Myles, more effective. Fits in well with this team. Great addition.

Hmmmm, you may be right about Myles. Somehow, I overlook him because big man basketball is so different than wings and guards. He has grown by leaps and bounds this season. Last night, against a really strong center, he may have been exposed just a bit, but I'm very hopeful that with his intelligence, he can learn from last night and use it to get even better.

One of the biggest things he brought was patience and calm, which doesn't show up in the stat sheet. He settled the rest of the team and got us into our offensive sets - something that Baker usually does when on the floor. Just great to see his development so far.

This is exactly what i was referencing above when I talked about game 1. When he stepped onto the floor, he took over as floor general. In his first minute of his first collegiate game. He made calls and put his teammates in the right positions. I was really excited by what I saw that night, and it just keeps getting better.

not sure how that's possible playing 31 minutes. Harper was at 32 only one with more.

But I heard on postgame (Jerry Recco or WRSU) that Mulcahy was the only Rutgers player to have negative plus/minus last night so there's the negative if you take that stat as something.

A few SHU guys said last year it was no big deal that Paul committed to RU. One asked. "How long will it take before he transfers". I think us getting Harper and Mulcahy who both were first team All State really bothers some SHU fans. One guy said last night that Pikiell is really getting it done and that we are passing by SHU. We did finally get several SHU fans respecting our improvements last night. A few though were having a fit that we are ranked higher than them by the Ledger. They will lose Powell, McKnight and Gill who are 3 of their best players at the end of the school year. At the beginning of the season some SHU fans they shouldn't even play us as it would hurt their rankings. We have definitely improved. For a while I never thought I might see this again during my lifetime and now I am. This is so much more fun for an old guy like me who has been a loyal fan and season ticket holder for many many years. I have been attending Ru games for 49 years now and have followed the team since the Lloyd & Valvano years.

Geo Baker - “Paul will be a Legend when he’s done here”
And like Geo, Mulcahy will have to look to take his shot more often. But how sweet it is to have a floor general out there.

Get well Geo.. when you get back the guard core can pick any 2 and excel.

His other skills aside, his passing is a thing of beauty. The drop pass to Carter in the first half just make you smile and how he was able to see around Watkins and Dread let alone make the pass for the dime to Myles in the first half is amazing

This kid is a stabilizing, calming influence.
He was overwhelmed by the foot and hand-speed of this level at first, but he’s learning the spacing and angles every game.
He still can’t get his shot off, but that will come too.
Great vision, along with protecting the ball, and getting much better on D.
He’s now another big piece of our success

Spot on analysis from a baseball guy.

Strongly disagree with single handedly. Both Mulcahy and Young were key in turning the tide in the second half from laugher to keeping it within reach. The starting lineup clearly lacked a caretaker of the basketball (Paul) and fluidity in the offense; actually any offense (Young). Both of these young men provided what was severely lacking from the starting lineup in the first half.

Ron was a man in the second half.

we can agree to disagree ;)

for an 8-10 min period of the first half, he made several key individual plays keeping the game from getting away...

Young's impact was much more in the 2nd half

dont get me wrong, we needed everyone...just saying that if not for Paul's heroics in the first half, we are already dead by half.

my 2 cents.

Love this kid's game. Can't wait until he starts to shoot more....and he will. He hesitated on an open 3 yesterday and he needs to take that.

This does not pass the sniff test.

He's arguably the best player on the team outside of Myles. That kid as a senior is going to be something.

Complementing Young, this was Mulcahy's first half:
13:46 missed 3 pointer. 8-4
13:17 defensive rebound. 8-4.
12:26 assist to Carter 10-6
9:47 made layup 14-8
9:04 steal 16-8
8:48 assist to Johnson 16-10
5:55 block 18-12
5:55 defensive rebound 18-12
1:01 steal 29-26

In the first half, their stat lines:
Young: 6 pts, 2 rb, 0 ast, 0 stl, 0 blk, 1 tov, 2 pf
Mulcahy: 2 pts, 2 rb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk, 0 tov, 0 pf

Both were very important in keeping the game within striking distance in the first half.

If he develops a three pointer, he will indeed have his name in the rafters. Right now, defenders don't respect his outside shooting.

I agree that he needs to work on his outside shot, but at 36% from 3 he's already the third best 3-point shooting % on the team behind McConnell and Yaboah. He just needs to shoot more.

I am glad you called me out and forced me to do this...because it has hardened my position. as I tried to say (perhaps not clearly), I am referring to the middle of the half...from 13:50 to under 6 mins...this is the 8 mins (apologies, I said 8-10) that I was referring to...where we were not playing well but stayed in the game

13:50 Forces bad shot by Jones...leads to Young rebond
13:21 Huge individual rebount (tips to himself off backboard)
the 12:34 rebound by Young was BECAUSE Mulcahy rebounded the PSU wing...essentially free rebound
12:15 - drive and dish to get Carter easy layup....after several possession where we couldnt score...10-6...crowd starts to come to life...Young commits silly foul immediately after
11:13 - Mulcahy drives and gives Carter a layup...he misses...Mulcahy fights for ball (only RU guy rebounding) and allows us to keep possession
10:20 - Mulcahy prevents Penn State from going up 16-6 by defending the ally-oop
10:00- Mulcahy allows Young to get rebound ;)
9:45 - Mulcahy navigates around 2 guys for the scoop layup...14-8...again...2 consecutive possessions where he prevented us being down big...AND leads to the crowd getting back in the game
next possession...Young falls asleep and allows his guy to feed his man with a layup...once again killing the crowd
8:58 - Mulcahy hustles back and steals the ball on the drive...keeping it to 16-8
8:41...NEXT possession...Mulcahy feeds Myles on a no look pass for the DUNK...16-10...and once again gets the crowd back in the game
5:58...comes off his guy and causes a jump ball by contesting their big man...change of possession!! 18-12

I take your point, it's a team game so one could always argue that there is never anyone who can single handedly (admittedly my words) change a game, however, in rewatching the first half multiple times, I contend that the little things that Paul did (on and off the stat sheet) kept us in the game...and in that middle part of the half when we were on the cusp of getting blown out....which allowed us to get to the end of the half and make the run (where Young did make huge impacts later in the half and DEFINITELY in the 2nd half). Paul was also the primary ball handler that entire time....he didnt turn it over and CALMED us down.

We don't stay in this game without several consecutive "glue guy" plays by Paul...not a chance. and if you watch multiple times, he was clearly THE guy for RU that kept it together for that ~ 8 mins critical stretch.

end of half, and 2nd half...everyone stepped up. but that's not my point.

SirScarlet said "single handedly". I claimed both were instrumental.

I mean Paul wasn't going Mamba out there...

Going back to my original post... for the period time that I mentioned he was the most instrumental player on the team.... by far.

Young hardly played a factor in that same period of time.

He replied above to clarify but what I believe many folks meant (me for 1) was that his insertion into the game and play during those mid 1st half mins changed the whole game for Rutgers. Reset it and that shows in your tracking of young.
It was by no means a 1 player show. Total team effort for sure.
