EDITED - missed some games in 2016-17

Pike’s record in road and neutral OOC games is awful.

2016-17:
66-59 WIN @ Depaul
73-61 loss @ Miami
71-66 WIN @ Stony Brook
67-53 WIN over Fordham @ MSG
72-61 loss @ SHU

2017-18:
No road/neutral games, but lost to Stony Brook and Hartford at home.

2018-19:
57-54 WIN @ Miami
78-70 loss @ Fordham
72-66 loss @ SHU

2019-20:
80-72 loss to St. Bonaventure @ Toronto
71-60 loss @ Pitt

2020-21:
None

2021-22:
73-70 loss @ Depaul
85-83 loss @ UMass
77-63 loss @ SHU

2022-23:
72-66 loss to Temple @ Mohegan Sun
68-61 loss @ Miami

2023-24:
68-61 loss to Princeton @ Trenton CURE Arena
76-57 loss @ Wake Forest
70-63 WIN @ SHU
70-60 loss to Miss. State @ Prudential Center

2024-25:
79-77 loss @ Kennesaw State

So that’s 5-15 in road and neutral OOC games.

I mean let’s be fair that he did stabilize the program and take us to what would’ve been 3 straight tournaments

Is he the guy to get us over hump jury is out

But don’t diminish what did get accomplished compared the the 30 years of futility prior
No doubt. But let’s also be honest. Hes a .500 HC in conference since 2019-20 and has had too many crappy performances against subpar competition in that time. I like Pike, but he’s not above criticism.

Maybe the two five star players should take some responsibility themselves for losing to Kennesaw State.

That said, Pikiell’s record in OOC road games is atrocious and it’s so much of a pattern at this point that there is clearly something there.

As I was watching the 1st half, I saw a lot of drives that weren't finished and some shots by the wrong guys. Were the Davis, Williams and Derkack 3 point attempts all in the 1st half?

That's not a pretty record though.

I think some of the non-con issues are scheduling related. St. Bonaventure/Temple at completely soulless neutral venue, KSU in the most obvious look ahead spot of all time, strange away game at UMass

That fin atrocious and looks just like the Rutgers acceptability standard for contract extensions and raises.

I'm moving into the Highway Robbery camp for these two coaches.
Here’s the thing… had Pike continued getting the lunch pail guys and scraping together hard nosed defenses that win anywhere from 15-20 games a year and make the tournament occasionally he probably would be on a longer leash because talent would be questioned

This superstar recruiting class probably accelerates the hot seat for him if he fails this year

i think the hot seat would come after if next year is a major slip...then 2 years from now becomes a big year for him to perform

but along way to go, lets let this year play out first

19-48 away from the RAC since the start of 2019-20.
The killer is that they play a lot of these games down a lot in the first half and spend so much energy trying to claw there way back into it that they have nothing left in the tank at the end.
During the broadcast today the commentary said they arrived very late last night, why?

It just seems to be a recurring theme with Pike’s teams away from home.

i mean its likely they werent focused because of the Ace hype returning home and the fact that ACE immaturity showed from the get go early. He wanted to put on a show and show off and he ended up being humbled. But judging from the previous games at the rac, this team thinks its better than they are and they can just walk on the court and win. The game was lost after that ridiculous 40-15 run Kennessaw went on...thats simply absurd..i think people are forgetting just how bad that first half was

So that’s 2-15 in road and neutral OOC games.
There is no defending that out of conference away/ neutral record. Period. His teams do not seem ready to match the opponent ‘s effort even though for the other team it is like their Super Bowl. The team knew the other team was going to come at them but still not a good mindset . Definitely can see that from the freshman but Zack and Jeremiah , Jordan and Pj , the transfers and upperclassmen have to get the guys ready to play. Shooting on the road has been historical problem for Tutgers but a lot of visiting teams. Rebounding and effort can overcome a sub par shooting night. Not having either on the first half was inexcusable

In 16/17 rutgers defeated DePaul fordham and stony brook in road and neutral games.

We are not ready to play early in the year …irA been a pike trend . Team starts to turn corner in December and play better as season goes

These OOC games are mainly earlier in the season, and Pike has been a notoriously slow starter. Not an excuse, just a fact.

You’re right, somehow I missed those. OP has been edited. Pike is 5-15 in road/neutral OOC games.

Still bad, and it’s 1-11 since the 2019-20 season.

Syracuse kind of a similar quality team is 7-17 over the same time frame. I don’t think that stat is super meaningful. It’s not huge sample size either but i would suspect teams of our kenpom rankings have similar experiences in road and neutral games. I suspect it kind of goes with the territory of our kenpom neighborhood. There’s certainly been lots of memorable wins. More than any other coach before him by far.

I hear what you're saying, but 1-11 since the start of the 2019-20 season against the likes of Fordham, St. Bonaventure, a bad Pitt team, Depaul, UMass, Temple, Princeton, some poor SHU teams, and now Kennesaw State?

I would bet Syracuse's road/neutral OOC losses are against better competition, as they usually play in early season/Feast Week type tournaments.

Somebody above said it: Pike just doesn't have his teams at peak performance levels in November/December. It's probably because, historically, he's still teaching his players "team defense" -- no easy feat -- and so the teams just don't gel until January. But it's still a problem.
