I know that it is early in the season but I wanted to revisit the predictions you folks came up with for the ppg we expected for this squad. Here are the early totals

EO = 14.8
Geo = 14.3
Thiam = 11.3
Kiss = 11.3
Jr = 8
MM = 6.5
Doorson = 5.8
Johnson = 4
Carter = 1.3
McC = 1
Duc = 0.5

A few notes...

1. The growth of some of these guys is encouraging. Thiam’s frosh-to-today ppg of 4 to 7 to 11. EO is 2.5 to 8 to 14. Doorson’s last 3 years are 1 to 2 to 6.

2. If MM stays at around 6-7 for this year is fine by me. He needs to be more efficient with his 7ppg and play defense and rebound. I think back to dahntay Jones’s freshman year. He was a better overall player than Mathis and he also came off the bench and provided about 10ppg in his first year. If Mathis can figure things out and stay at 7ppg while the competitors improve, that’s a good first year for me

3. Thiam has stepped up, which is sorely needed. He needs to keep playing with confidence

4. Harper has exceeded our expectations but I see his 8ppg staying strong and maybe improving. I can see Kiss’s 11.3 falling

5. Would love it if we kept getting 6 and 4 from our top 2 big men.

6. I’m fine if Macconnell gives us just 1ppg as long as he gives us some minutes at the point and facilitates the offense well.

7. I have to think the 1ppg for carter and duc might be just it. They will play more once we face the bigger teams

8. Can we reasonably expect/need some combination of 30 points per night from our top 2 guys? Is that the sign of a healthy offense?

These numbers are interesting so far. But the most interesting number is that every single non-freshmen who has taken three point shots is shooting at least 50% from three. I think we will have to wait until this comes down to earth to analyze how the scoring load will be distributed as the year goes on.

Given that we scored 185in our first two games, I wouldn’t expect these numbers to go up. My one exception would be Myles whose numbers I’d hope to,see closer to eight.

I like the Jones/Mathis comparison. He does seem to be similar caliber athlete with a similar attacking mindset.

As for health of offense, having two guys producing 14-15 ppg is a great start. EO is the workhorse and Gio can take over at times. Both find ways to score without being the primary option, which is great. I think the key is still Thiam; I don’t see us running the offense through Kiss or the low post & he’s a player that creates matchup problems for most teams. It was great that when we needed a bucket yesterday, Pike recognized this drew up a play and he delivered. He also had that block where he talked a little trash which was fun to see some emotion/ personality from him. Goo loved it.

I’m sure he’s being challenged daily by Johnson & Mathis daily and he’s coming into his own. If he can get into that 14-15 ppg range and they continue to develop, we’ll have a really nice rotation.
