You are correct that for the most part Laviano is playing well for a first time starter. The issue many are having is Rettig, if given an opportunity, could possibly be playing well also. The difference is the type of throws Cook was able to consistently complete despite tight coverage by RU's defensive backs which were the difference in the game. The announcer raved about Cook's great throws and catches against good coverage. Not only has Laviano not completed passes remotely of that caliber, he doesn't even attempt to complete any. In the 1st half against Norfolk, Rettig threw a perfectly placed pass to a tightly covered Patton which was very similar to the passes completed by Cook and other elite QB's. Many, including myself, believe if Rettig can bring that to the RU offense, combined with the talent level at receiver and running back, they could be very potent. Laviano is the safe choice and plays a safe style but doesn't it make sense to have tried the QB with the potential to lead a potent offense and then fall back to the safe QB if the first option struggles?
