1. Dylan Harper is just Clown Shoes. My goodness he almost willed this team to victory single handedly. 37 points (on 11-19 FG and a whopping 15-16 FTs).

2. But the real story of the game was the lack of 3-pt shooting (2-13, including several misses on wiiiide open looks) and poor defensive rebounding (we gave up 16 offensive rebounds and only had 19 defensive rebounds). You’re not going to win many games in today’s game of college basketball only hitting two from deep, especially against a team like Alabama that hit 10 threes. If Derkack just hits one of those wide open looks, the game is tied in the last 30 seconds.

3. Ace Bailey showed out tonight. Not only did he have 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist, but he was also active on the defensive end, with 2 steals, 1 block, and some solid on-ball defense where he was using his length to bother his man. I feel like Ace finally learned how to “compete” in college basketball.

4. Losing JWill to fouling out hurt bigtime down the stretch, as Sears just kept getting down hill, mostly against Derkack, and either getting to the tin or dishing to the wing.

5. It’s odd to say in a game we gave up 95 points, but I really feel like our defense played better tonight. After we went down 8 in the last 5 or 6 minutes, we got several stops and crawled back to within 2 points at 90-88. In fact, every time Bama would go up by 7-9 points, we would scratch and claw back to a 3 or 4 point deficit. The lead never got to double digits, which is a testament to the defense, the team’s heart, and Dylan and Ace.

6. Have to give a shout-out to Ogbole. He played his best game as a Scarlet Knight, with 9 points, 8 rebounds (including 3 OREB), and hit 5-6 FTs, including 2 of 2 when Bama chose him to shoot the FTs for Dylan. He provided some strength and toughness on the interior that we are sorely lacking, and has a surprising touch around the rim and on foul shots. If he can provide this type of play against the bigger teams, he will help this team.

7. JMike, Martini, and Hayes provided nothing again, and JMike was affirmatively a huge liability, especially being out of control on offense.

8. We have a major problem moving forward if our supposed best 3-point shooters (Hayes and Martini) are nearly unplayable because of their defense. This makes the continued improvement of Acuff even more important. But Pike has to find a way to squeeze good minutes out of Hayes and Martini to provide a 3-point threat.

9. I’m disappointed we lost, but quite honestly, we played about as well (or better) than we could have expected. We looked like we belonged, and we have to be pleased with our showing on a national stage.

#2 was the game. Hit two more three-pointers, going 3-10 and 30% and we win.

The rebounding is a bit of a problem, but that’s also been offset by the turnovers we have been creating. That’s the construction of the roster.

First we all watched a heck of a game; really last two games. And when you're in the company of Mr. Douby (7 games in) you're one tremendous athlete. Need to call out EO - honestly thought they put another completely different player on the court. His ability to set screens for Dylan is starting to take shape. Like Derkack a lot and brings plenty to the table. But would prefer a contested 3 from Ace versus an open 3 from him (at least at this point until he shows an outside shot). As mentioned above - we have shooters who can't play D; And defenders who can't shoot. But the ND win was huge. Wasn't expecting one tonight (last night) - but they gave so much to build on.

Dylan guarding Sears down the stretch tells you everything. Ace was better on the defensive end and he makes a difference when he plays hard. It cant be every third possession.

I was told today correctly that everyone cant be Caleb…..but him being engaged 2/3 of possessions can turn us from a bad defensive team to an average one. That should be enough.

The stat of the game was 2-13 or 15.4% from 3. Consider Bama was 10-25 or 40% from 3. Cannot possibly compete going forward with such poor outside shooting. We were hurt with 3s by JWill fouling out so early.

Zach Martini is a total bust so far. Needs to be removed as a captain of the team.

Hayes is looking like dead wood as well.

JMike is not good.

Ogbole is a good surprise so far. Somerville is a project.

Dekack has many pluses but makes many bad plays and not a reliable FT shooter.

Ace had his coming to the party game. Will only get better. And won’t turn 18 until after the season.

And Dylan Harper has the heart of a lion and the skill of a Swiss watch maker. On to Saturday’s game.

Long story short, Pike shockingly whiffed in the portal because he still has zero clue what type of player would have success at the B1G level. I’m very disappointed.

Someone needs to tell Acuff you can’t play defense flat footed bending at the waist.

You need to be on the balls of your feet, sitting down. I learned this in 6th grade.

He gets blown by, by anyone quick because his lateral movement is hindered being flat footed.

With all the guard coaches on this team no one can help with this?

Sounds like we are flip flopping on the who should get major minutes at center

I don’t think it’s just bad technique. The kid is obviously hobbled. He moves like a 50 year old guy in a rec league. More reason why it was a huge wtf that pike had him in so much. He was getting abused play after play

You realized it's based on money, right? How much did you give?

Anyway, imagine paying $1M and Cliff plays like that. If I didn't know he was a stud for us I wouldn't have noticed him all night.

But that was the three point stat and we did compete against strong potential a final four team…. All the forward looking absolute statements coming out again.

The 24 point difference from the 3 point line was the main reason for the loss.Rutgers stayed in the game because of Harper and Bailey creating shots off the dribble and the teams ability to make foul shots .The defensive problem with rebounding is upsetting because there is no corrective action taking place.Martini and Hayes were productive players at other schools but at Rutgers their playing time has diminished along with the number of three point shots.Slngling them out for poor defense makes little sense on a team that has shown a inability to defend even weak out of conference opponents.Bottom line Rutgers has two elite college basketball players and the rest of the roster is deeply flawed on offense and or also on defense.Williams is the only player showing some ability on defense but he gets in foul trouble or needs rest from injuries.

Hobbled yes, but it’s terrible technique. But with JWill in foul trouble it narrows options.

24 points is overstating the difference, it is really 8 points, the difference between a 3 pointer and a 2.

I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to match Alabama's physicality. That bodes well for conference games. Our poor 3 point shooting has to improve because rebounding is going to be a season long problem. Happy to see an improved Ogbole but I really don't see a much higher ceiling for him. We have a significant interior paint defense problem. Let's face it, we are going to have to outscore many of the better teams that have a strong inside presence.

I thought the D was pretty good, and showing clear progress game by game. Alabama is a fantastic team moving the ball inside and out breaking down the D and draining big shots.

Alabama scored 95 points, but that was a big factor of the pace. Both teams we’re going fast.

With us coming back to make it a one score game with Dylan up front on the right and Ace on the right wing
the ball goes left with Dercak then crossing into the lane and not scoring. A possession where neither Ace nor Dylan touched the ball was disgraceful at that time in the game.

I think it’s too simplistic to say “there is no corrective action taking place.” We have been getting torched from 3 and frankly getting torched with penetration. The last two games I saw a significant step forward on overall D intensity, turnovers created, and stopping penetration. But still getting torched from 3 and still lots of work to be done on the perimeter D with fighting through screens, switching, etc. Progress though.

Hard to focus on rebounding when you are getting torched from deep and need to focus on that. All the factors touch each other. If you have to extend the D to cover perimeter it’s hard to focus on rebounding. And with limited practice time you can’t prioritize everything. It’s not like there is some easy X and Os solution that if only Pike told this guy to do that, it would all be better. These are all new players.

I’m looking for incremental progress and generally seeing it.

He’s just really slow. Maybe its the injury but it’s a big problem for our defense.

Degaz, great post! All salient points especially with regards to Martini and Hayes. Pike must find a way to get them touches even if we need to switch to zone on defense. Two more threes win us the game.

Nah, he struck out on a couple of guys.. I had Matt alocco penciled in as Dylan's back cour partner lol...didn't pan out, there was also a shooter from the west more highly rated than pj that they came on a visit as well. Missed on a couple of big men as well...but I believe the guys he was able to get will get better as the season progresses. Acuff is coming off of a broken foot..

The guy from the West Pikiell missed on was a 3 and D guy: Not as good a 3-point shooter (in fact only okay, but acceptable), AND an excellent defender. Hayes is likely the better 3-point shooter, but not nearly the defender. I want to say it was Jadon Jones of Long Beach State ... a 3 and D 6'5" guard. I think he announced to go to Oklahoma, where he shows up on their roster, but has not played a game yet according to OU's stats has not yet played ... hurt, maybe a back issue.
