Rene is a goner I think.

So it doesn't make it true if it is coming from Rene's mouth? I get what you are saying but he could've easily said, "I don't have a favorite right now and I will make a decision soon." Instead, he choose to state it is between UNC and Wisky meaning unless something great happens RU is seemingly out.
Again, I can easily word the question to get a certain response. Recruits are aware of what school they are speaking with and answers reflect it. I'm not saying Rene is changing his commitment, but the response by Rutgers is the same every time some unfavorable news comes out. This was similar to his comments about Wisconsin not long ago.

At this point, we're a "safety school".

The early commits that we get from the high-level kids are only as good as their next, better offer. Then they're gone.

When it happened to Fludd, folks blamed his inability to close. Now that it's happening to Ash, people can blame "new staff, new system".

The reality is that the "blame", such as it is, falls squarely on our reputation for lack of success. We are not OSU, we're not MSU, we're not LSU, we're not Michigan or Wisconsin.

Until we manage to demonstrate a consistent ability to play with those teams, to beat them almost as often as not, the landscape of recruiting won't change in any appreciable way and we'll be having these same "commit/decommit" anxieties every year.

NSD is in February. The season is from September to December. That leaves just a tick over 7 months out of the year that would be better spent drinking.

I wish there was an audio tape on the interview because I'm willing to bet the reporter used only favorable quotes to support his story. Not all quotes make it into the story because it might go against the principles of the story.

I'm not so sure about that. I get that this is happening more and more in recent years, but I think Flood was particularly guilty of getting kids who weren't ready to commit to commit as a placeholder. Both of last 2 years it seemed as though Flood pushed kids to commit early. I think he was trying to use that to build recruiting momentum, thinking that even if some of the kids don't stick, most will, and you will close strong as the class fills up. It didn't really work last year, and it is not working this year.

I don't think we would have held these kids any better had Flood stayed. Therefore, I don't really think any of this is on Ash. I do think Ash and staff will be more successful moving forward, and we will see less of this.

Livingston is the most beautiful of the campuses now. You get more out of touch with every single post.

I'm on Livingston Campus twice a week, at least. Your definition of "beauty" must be different from mine. But thanks for playing. What other post of mine did you think was out of touch?

The part in bold is absolutely, 100% true.

I don't think any of it is on Ash, either. As I said, I think it's all about "Rutgers" at this point. My hope is that Ash puts together an on-field product that manages to win a few games and not put everybody to sleep, which will in turn lead to better recruiting down the road.

Somebody else said it a couple weeks ago, but I remember it resonating - even when Flood's teams won, they were just plain boring.

I still don't know what the hell that "War of the Worlds" lookin' thing next to the RAC is.

8081 The Bowl game is a distant memory . Does not apply here. And in spite of the scandals down there Chapel Hill is not a bowl of shredded wheat academically.

UNC has 5 DB verbal commits
Wisky has 5 DB verbal commits.
RU has 1 other DB verbal commit.
We slaughtered UNC in our bowl game in 2014.
??????????????????????

You should be embarrassed for posting that. That's not a reason any kid would choose one school over another.

Hope you are right. "So if you don't end up at Rutgers, what would your second choice be?" <redacted>

As someone said in this thread: "And you know this how?"
Well, I'll say this: everything I heard months ago about him turned out to be true. Temple never stopped recruiting Russo, and he loved the staff. But he also loved the Fludd staff, and respected his commitment to them. he didn't even attend the Temple-ND game when every other kid in the area was there out of respect for the Rutgers staff. And central to that, I've understood, was his relationship with Barthel. He was the linch pin.

So even when Fludd was fired, Russo hung on. Even when Mehringer was hired, with the intention of running a more spread offense, he hung on. Fludd was fired in November, Ash was hired on December 7 - a month ago. Only once Barthel was sent off did Russo almost immediately withdraw his verbal. Temple was immediately in a great position to get him, even with Les Miles and Cam Cameron both coming to Archbishop Wood to woo him and try to get him to take an official to Baton Rouge. And once I knew that Barthel was going to be working at Temple, I knew the Owls were a lock. It's true that LSU never extended the official offer, but they (per an LSU site) were prioritizing Haskins, with Russo as their first backup. So maybe now with Haskins at tOSU, he would've been offered? Maybe he still will be. But between his love for Rhule's staff, and the addition of Bathel, I can't see him going anywhere else now.

If you're going to tell me that a recruiting coordinator, who does not decided on the offense, defense, two deep, practice, or anything else that has to do with the kid's playing career would carry that much weight I say horse hockey.

As I see it, Russo is at Temple for 4 main reasons.....

Always liked the Temple Staff
Fits the offense
LSU didn't offer
RU is looking for a different type of QB and he knew it

What if someone was to tell you he was looking around before Flood was fired? Could you dispute that? What if he wasn't thrilled with the new offensive direction and decided to go now rather than being recruited over in a year? Could you dispute that? I can't. There's too much unknown.

Finally, if Barthel is such a freekin Svengali what the hell happened to all the Jersey kids he had such a connection with? Was Russo the only one to fall into his clutches?

I really like the kid and wish him the best but come on man.

Russo definitely liked the Temple staff; there's no disputing that. It's unclear if he fits the offense, because Temple has a new OC. The guy was the QB coach for the Falcons, so he may well prefer a pro style, but I can't say. LSU (which also doesn't run a pro style offense) didn't offer, but it was clear they would if Haskins committed somewhere else. With signing day not until Feb, 3, and Temple clearly willing to wait for his commitment, why wouldn't he just wait out LSU if he preferred them? And at this point, Rutgers will take any skilled quarterback and see what happens. That's not a knock, but there are much stronger programs who play it that same way - grab the talent when you can, and sort it out later. That's not to say they wouldn't have also gone after kids more suited to the spread, but when you can, you stockpile talent at positions.

Barthel is not a svengali, but Russo really connected with him, and that played a huge role in this flip.

Amen. We haven't successfully recruited an adequate amount of New Jersey kids for a number of years. Why would said recruiters be retained by a new staff ? Hopefully, we can do better.

Apparently he is still visiting. OP really struggles with this whole headline attention thing.

Hey, dumbass, the only one struggling is you...with reality. Kid says UNC and Wisconsin are his top 2. That's reality.

Kindly ignore me you phony fake insider schmuck.

Yes, that is a consideration. Maybe not for you, but a kid with a high opinion of himself, or herself could easily be intimidated. If you don't believe me, look at some of the transfers from the women's basketball team. They are asked to do things on the court that many of these women never had to do in HS, like play Defense. And, some have bolted to easier pastures.
Please. Every coach says that cliche. No body going to out work us, we are going to be the strongest, the fourth quarter belongs to us ect. No recruit is going to be afraid of some coaching motto.

Transfer are because of the actual intensity they are not ready for. Not some motto. Most end up finding that it the same everywhere unless the transfer down.

CFB recruiting is a total scam. These kids are getting scholarships so they should be drafted.
I don't know who wastes time following bunch of teenagers deciding who to go steady with?

Drafted? Wow.

The fans are the ones who hang on every word they say or every tweet they send. Verbal commitments mean nothing going forward to many recruits. As soon as people understand and quit taking it so personally the better off they'll be.

Sorry, there is huge difference between saying it(coach speak), and actually doing it! Ash, in my opinion is a doer. And, "afraid" never said that, but lazy, entitled, with out a doubt. Again, this is my opinion based on dealing with today's youth, daily. Your opinion, is yours.

Rene is no longer sure he'll have "time"to visit Rutgers if that tells you anything.
This. If Rene is putting out statements as such regardless of how he is questioned it gives you a clue to where this is headed. As I mentioned previously, a simple "I'll let things play out" or "I don't have a favorite as of now and will just take my OVs" something to that effect without tipping his hand about where he is leaning would've sufficed.

Yea, he is all but gone at this point. Its a UNC-Wisky battle now. Makes zero sense since he had high praise for Ash at OSU but I guess Ash at RU isn't good enough for him. [eyeroll]
That sucks. Wanted this guy badly.
