With Russo's good elite 11 performance will Rivals and the other services give him an extra star?

Rivals - 2 star
247 - 3 star
Scout - 3 star
ESPN - no rank

PA ranks:
247 - # 36 in state
Rivals - not in top 30
Scout - not in top 30

I don't want to take a way from Russo's performance in any way, but it is just one camp. People might be blowing it a bit out of proportion.

Personally, once a kid is coming to RU, I don't really care about his star ranking any more. I care for kids we are recruiting, because it helps me gauge how good others think they are, but once a kid commits to RU, it doesn't really matter. He will be as good as he is for us. He will either prove the "recruiting experts" right, or he will prove that Flood and staff have are good at identifying under-recruited talent.

It may just be one camp but this camp has at least 2 ex PRO qbs, several QB coaching experts and others who work strictly with QBs.

I put a lot more faith in this camp than a 2 or 3 rivals writers who never played the sport and favor recruits who have offers from a name program. Automatically giving them additional stars because of the school.

Perfect example is the PSU commit Zembeic. He is a 4 star but will not make the Elite 11 and this kid is 2*s better than Russo. Give that some thought.

Yet many sites said Zembeic was one of the top 10 guys there, and had a bad 7v7, whereas Russo had a good 7v7 which is why he got in although the rest of the camp he didn't stand out as much. It just shows that every recruiting thing, including camps, are flawed. We won't know anything until he is taking snaps in an RU jersey

Woz - That might explain a 4 star vs. 3 star comparison. There's simply no rational explanation for a 4 star vs. 2 star differential.

Russo won't be a 2 star for very long... A bigger factor than his performance though is his lack of offers, which I still don't understand. I know every fan base thinks their coach is the best at "finding diamonds in the rough" and having a great eye for talent, but if he looks so good at camp other coaches should be looking at him no

In season and even during the spring and preseason camps we can look directly at performance to gauge how things are going. So, for those people who do not want an off-season from football, recruiting (besides replacing coaches) is the only thing to follow.

That is why stars matter to some here. That is why watching recruits perform in the pre-college camps matter to some. As for me, I can wait until the season starts... then again, I did open this thread.

I expect he'll be getting calls from enough P5 schools now to make us nervous.

why does anyone care how many stars he has? Does it make you feel better? If he is coming here and can perform and help us win games isn't that all that mattters? I could care less what our recruiting rankings are as long as we continue to win games and have good solid citizens playing for RU year after year.
And what if we dont win? Then will you care about recruiting rankings?

IThats not the point. He obviously is good enough to warrant placement in the finals of the elite 11. People who know quarterbacks have said he shows good skills. So why is the # of stars important to some people? If he is 3 stars instead of 2, will that help us win more games? recruiting rankings dont win games, players and coaches do.

His inclusion in the Elite 11 finals just made all of his star ratings irrelevant. Everyone now knows that he can ball with the best of them.

Because stars may help to bring in other kids that the staff wants. Some of these kids do pay attention to stars just like many on this board.

Perception can be a factor.

Totally agree.

The Florida kids don't play the Jersey Kids or Maryland kids in HS. All they have is Star rankings. Sure some mike look at some kids videos, but not everyone has them readily available. If I am a 4-star and I am picking between 3 schools that I feel comfortable at, I'd prefer to go to the school that has a bunch of 3 and 4 stars as opposed to the ones that have 2 or 3.

If Makes a difference when it seemed that if JG could commit and it would have cause others who might have been on the fence and highly rated to commit.

I understand some 4 star kids end up being busts and some 2 star kids excel... but it is naive to think that kids would not prefer to go to a school where it appears that they have the best chance of winning because they have highly rated kids.

I hate to see this in a negative light as I'm very happy for the kid, but if he gets named elite 11 and has a big senior season, I wouldn't be surprised to see some other teams come calling while finishing up their classes, in particular our neighbors to the west who just signed 2 players from Russo's high school in their 2015 class

Because coaches base offers on what they see on film and not what they do in shorts where there no offensive line and no defensive pressure. The hard thing for fans is that coaches don't watch highlight films. Fans typically only see the highlights. So there must be something there that they don't like. Perhaps he will come on as a senior and get more offers.

This is a good point. Its not like the dude had a ton of offers. So whatever he showed in this event is different from what everyone else - including our coach thought tpo an extent (since he picked him third and CLEARLY behind JG and Haskins) of the kid going in. Maybe we lucked out and Flood saw something in him. Or maybe hes just really good in pads, but looks like junk when hes out on the field (which isnt necessarily fatal, given the kid is only 17.)

Either way - hes committed to RU, and hes doing well. Thats good enough for me.

2 star kids are usually those that evaluators haven't seen a lot of - meaning they haven't participated in a lot of camps, or became a starter later in high school and haven't shown as much on the field. The Elite 11 performance will very likely be factored in the next time they readjust their star ratings. As far as offers - the sites only know what the prospects tell them. If Russo is committed to Rutgers, why would he keep telling them about additional offers he's getting now?

Just happy he's doing well, and hope he does well on the field next year and at RU.

Kid only started for one year. Clearly had much better stats than JG and similar to Haskins (some better some not) last year on the field. Flood gave him a committable offer months before the other two committed. I have no clue what our staff saw that other didn't but maybe we caught a rabbit in the hat.

Need to consider level of competition too. JG and JH may have played against higher levels.

TTFP already has a verbal from a 4 star pro style QB.

How can any recruit watching the video of Dilfer talking about Anthony fail to be impressed with this young man? Kudos to our coaches for recognizing his talent.

I scratch my head when evaluators downgrade this young man's talent because he played for a team that emphasized the run and totally dominated its competition. He was the leader of that team. Assuming that the young man was just a team manager ignores all the intangibles needed to play the role he did with that team.

Just so we're clear. Rivals/Scout/247 stars are meaningless. Offers from peer schools are not a factor. But Trent Dilfer's assessments are solid gold?

Dilfer isn't the only one making assessments and besides, he went 6-6 with 2 TDs. What else is there to say about that? He earned it. The kid is gold under pressure.

Who do you think has spent more time watching Russo live and in person?

Agreed. Not to mention you have all of the top rated quarterbacks to compare him to and he more than holds his own. The recruiting services have no way of getting this deep of an evaluation.

But to the same notion, this was one weekend vs. an entire season. Morale of the story, NOTHING accurately shows how good a high school QB will be in college

I don't care about winning on signing day. I only care about winning in the fall. I don't care about "perception" or anything else. I just want Russo to become a good college QB.

Two things -

1)

2) Wonder what our recruiting "gurus" would have said on this board if Brady Hoke was our coach pulling in the classes he did (6th in 2012, 4th in 2013, 20th in 2014) and losing the way he did.
