Schiano in the running for USF head coaching job

If it were not for Schiano and his efforts on and off the field at RU we would not be in the BIG. You don't know what could have happened if he had the BIG to sell to NJ recruits and South Floridians. When he started at Rutgers he had in facilities and infrastructure the equivalent of what the men's basketball coach has. He had nothing but a vision and Mulcahy and he built the program. Before Schiano got here we were pathetic kind of like we are now. I remember because I was at Rutgers as a student. They should build a statue of that dude in front of the stadium. How some of us forget.
This is truth though our demo had us on the BIG radar for over 20 years...GS and Mulcahy helped build the proper culture...they had an excellent vision..

how many of those kids actually worked out here? Davis. amazing how many of our 4 stars with these supposed huge offers never panned out. See his last class. Also, ignore the fact his best classes were after the Pitt self destruction. Pitt and UNC owned him in recruiting NJ. Finally, the idea he is going to come hard in NJ while in FLorida is silly. Almost as silly as thinking we are losing kids to USF
AND, a lot of his Florida recruits would wind up in trouble or even jail.

would he still take the job if they don't give him access to a helicopter ? more ground to cover there than here.

It would be funny to see the reaction of him returning to Tampa Bay after what happen last time he was a HC there. That said, if hired he should do well there, the AAC is pretty easy outside of Houston and maybe Cincy.

re: a statue....

so it was only a coincidence that RUs rise happened when VT, Miami and BC left, televised Thursday night BE games happened, and bowl slots doubled ?

Isn't GS still in year 1 of 2 year commitment to Urban. He is not going any where until the commitment is fulfilled.

Yes, things could have been a bit different if he had the BIG to sell, but he chose to pack up in the middle of the night and move on to Tampa Bay instead, taking all of his coaches (except Flood! Thank You) and leaving a recruiting class hanging. So why wasn't Flood taken? Greg thought that he was just not good enough and that leads us to your point about being in a pathetic situation again. I am very confident that Ash will get us there!

He turned down Michigan to stay at Rutgers and you criticize the guy for going to the NFL? You do know the NFL is the pinnacle of football coaching right?

So where is he now? I don't see him as a head coach in the NFL today or any NCAA team for that matter! And I'm not criticizing him! I'm saying that was his choice which we all have. It did not pan out well for him. Now he has Ash's old position and Ash has his old position.

This is correct. We would probably be playing in the AAC or worse right now if schiano failed here. There was talk about downgrading the program to a Delaware type level. A few more years like the Shea and early schiano days and we would be done. We should be so lucky if ash has similar success.

I don't think anyone forgets what he did for Rutgers. But that doesn't mean we don't think he reached his peak here and would prefer to not ever have him back.
I also always said that I would not be against a statue for the guy or naming a facility after him..until, a little report came out that he may have also chose to walk away from helping an innocent child.

USF would actually be a great fit for Schiano. He would also have very little need to recruit NJ all that hard and to be honest, the top NJ kids we want are the ones we are fighting the likes of Fla, Mia, FSU etc for. Realistically, if a NJ kid wanted to play in Florida, Greg would be competing more with those programs first before we had to worry about him.

Is there any open job that he hasn't been mentioned for the past few years?

I would think he could get a better job than USF. The Ohio State fans and press love him.

Agreed, the B1G had us on the shortlist since the early 90s and were waiting on ND to say yes to pair us together, but Schiano's efforts here made it a much more palpable add alongside Maryland since we were actually consistently good for nearly a decade at that point.

Had Greg not left, we'd be competing for one of the top spots in the conference today and would have likely won the AAC with those future NFL players that Flood won with. Hopefully Ash can generate that type of recruiting success going forward, and 2017 is so far a nice sign as long as these guys stick.

I think Kiffin to USF.

This makes a lot of sense since Tampa is where Lane grew up. He has connections from living there as well as recruiting it for Bama. Of the list the OP provided, him and Charlie Strong would be the top 2 candidates.

We loved him here too! For the time and effort it took to elevate our program from where it was to very respectable. A hell of a job. Many could not do it. The big question was can he take you to the next level? And sadly he could not. The book is still being written on Greg, but so far I see no evidence, weather at RU or Tampa Bay where he could take you over the mountain top. He still has time to show otherwise, but it seems to me that after 3 years no big name is interested in him for a reason.

I'm not sure he would have done any better that year. He may have won the Ville game but he more than likely loses a WTF game.

I respectfully disagree. With his D schemes and that talent he would have won the conf. He would have found a way to beat Pitt making UL game a scrimmage. He would have pounded Bridgewater. Anyway it's all speculation on my part and water under the bridge.

If Schiano stayed, Tom gets his waiver (trust me) and the team beats Kent State and Louisville. I still think they have a wtf game against Pitt but Rutgers goes to the Orange Bowl that year.
Ahhhh- I don't disagree with that but if he had the same exact team that Flood had...

The schemes would have been different. No way they give Bridgewater all that time to throw.

And maybe Teddy would have burned the blitz. I remember him doing it one time when we did blitz that game.

Big question is whether Wright would hold on to one of those two passes.

@McMurphyESPN: USF's top candidates include Rich Bisaccia, Lawrence Dawsey, Lane Kiffin, Les Miles, Greg Schiano & Charlie Strong, sources told @espn

I swear some people have lost their minds. Exactly how hard do we recruit the Tampa area? And exactly how many Jersey kids are going to choose to play at a school where they're going to get a lousy education, play in front of the stadium that's 80% empty most of the time, and isn't a P5 conference school, over one that is the opposite? Just stop it. Please.

That's all, thanks.

Yeah...and all of those RU guys I suddenly started seeing in the NFL were there because VPI, Miami, and BC left. The job GS did here looks so great partially because of how bad a job the guys before him...and the one after him...did.
As I said earlier in this thread, some guys I know think Rutgers has already peaked as a program under GS and won't likely get to those heights again. They say it's mostly because people in New Jersey just don't give two chits about Rutgers. I don't agree with them....but I see their point.

I'd root for Schiano to get whatever job he wants.. but I think he'd hate to have to fight the non-power-5 battles again.

If its just a family play, I get it. And if he can win there he can move up again... but I have to think he can do better. Hmmm.. then again, maybe there aren't many barriers to recruiting or keeping kids eligible at USF.

He has been looking for a HC gig for the last three off seasons. If he could do better, he would already have job.
