Share Your Recommendations for Those Traveling To Columbus

My group is leaning towards hitting a bar near the stadium rather than tailgating on Saturday morning. What are your recommendations?

There is a small bar called thirsty scholar. Cool little place we hung before the game two years ago.

hello all - welcome to Columbus, you'll have a great time. My suggestion if you are in town on Friday would be to walk the OSU campus - yes, High Street is filled with bars, restaurants, and party spots, but the campus itself is beautiful. Take a walk on the Oval to soak it all in. Other options on Friday would be the Columbus Zoo, as several people have already mentioned. Also, the Columbus Museum of Art, COSI, the Statehouse, the Scioto Mile, and Franklin Park Conservatory are all popular spots.

On Friday night, you have several dining/drinking options. Short North (more upscale/adult), Arena District/Park Street (more college kids, 20-somethings), Campus/High Street (self explanatory), Brewery District/German Village (older, less insane).

Highly recommend Hyde Park in the Short North for a great steak dinner. If you want seafood, check out The Pearl or the Guild House, both upscale and tasty. For tacos, try Bakersfield or Condado. For burgers, my choices are Thurman Cafe in German Village, or Bareburger in the Short North. If you want to have a heart attack from giant grilled cheese, hit Melt Bar and Grilled in the Short North.

On Saturday, I highly recommend just finding a public tailgate and soaking in the atmosphere around the stadium. I'm not enamored with many of the bars immediately outside the stadium, like Varsity Club. They will be packed to the gills anyway. There is also a giant BW3 at the corner of Lane and High if you're interested.

After the game, head down to the Short North for Gallery Hop or if you're still wanting more sports, hit the Crew game at 7:30 vs. Chicago. Always a good time.

Hope this helps, and hope you enjoy our fair city.

OK. So highly recommend Paulie Gees Pizza in the short north. We walked around afterwards & would agree with the poster who said the people there don't give a crap about football. Very hipster...had a NYC village vibe. We did not, however, see any galleries. As a matter of fact, at 8:15pm a lot of the businesses were closed . There we're a couple of restaurants open, one Mexican place was packed with a line outside, and there were at least 4 costume shops.

Off to the zoo today. Hopefully the weather holds out

Does anyone have a suggestion on game day lots? Will have my family with us and walking 15 to 20 minutes is fine. Goal would be arrive at 10 am on Saturday and park somewhere that we could walk around after game and grab some food. Here is the map I found. http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/osu/tickets/pdf/m-footbl-gameday-parking-map.pdf

I've got to admit - I rarely drive to the games. I usually have someone drop me off and then I just walk, drink, or both for a while until I can find an open bus (they're often free and just let people on and off after the games).

The few times I have driven, I try to park as far away as is practical for walking. Generally, I try to score a cheap church parking lot or something like that off Neil Avenue, up near Dodridge or a little South of there. Neil Avenue will take you down to campus (that's all pretty much campus housing on there anyway). DO NOT park on the streets. They have tow trucks literally lined up and just haul away car after car after car.

All that said, however, if you can convince someone who wants to make a few bucks to drop you off somewhere close by and then pick you up after you've walked for a while after the game, it'll make for a way less hectic experience. I've even had times that I would just walk all the way down High Street until I convinced someone with a truck to let me ride in the back. No one is moving fast enough at that point for it to be dangerous anyway. Traffic and parking is horrible on game day. Best of luck.

I hope you guys have fun at the zoo. It really is great. Skip the aquarium - it is pretty lame really and it gets packed in there. That's the only part of the zoo that could use some love. The rest of it is pretty amazing.

I forget the two names but there is a German place and sandwich bar that everyone claims you should go to. I tried both but they were madhouses. Their main drag is a great place to set up camp. Lots of bars and restaurants that open up to the main strip. Huge Barnes and Nobles with lots of gear to purchase as well.

By the way, the place you were thinking of is Katzinger's Deli - and yes, it's awesome but very busy.

Try the Gallery Hop on Saturday night. All businesses stay open later. Keep in mind the Short North extends for miles and theres a lot to see (I am not sure how far you ventured as most restaurants stay open until at least 10 and bars close at 2). Galleries to check out:

Buckeye Donuts in the morning are great. Whether you are into donuts or breakfast sandwiches. Usually packed.

@tOSU_fan the aquarium is the perfect place to hide during the thunderstorm currently occurring!

Fair enough :) I guess I'm spoiled. After seeing some of the really great aquariums around the country, ours pales in comparison. But you can stay dry and check out the big fat manatees swimming around! I hope you guys are enjoying the visit.

Just heard from my pop took them 11 hours to get to Columbus today. Apparently major construction somewhere along the way.

Route 70 has an area about 10 miles long of construction.... One lane open. Thankfully my GPS rerouted me &,we missed most of it.

Oh that must've been it. I also assume they hit it at the wrong time of day. Well, they made it, and are headed to a Greek restaurant for dinner. Go figure. 4 Greek guys go to a Greek restaurant. How original!

Had lunch at the Varsity Club today. We were the ONLY Rutgers people in the whole place. Too much rain to walk around the campus or go to German Village. Back at the team hotel now...it's always fun to be around R U fans. Dinner after the game at Hubbards Grill in the Short North.

Good spot, but watch the service - it can be a bit snippy.
