Something I find disturbing about east coasters

I suspect the OP puts ketchup on what he calls macaroni and thinks he is eating Italian food.

You need to order from OFF the menu. That's what most "rave" about. I learned it maybe the 5th time I went when I was living out there.

I have heard that, but haven't tried yet ... is it really that good?

I mean, I can go to Carl's Jr and choose between a triple-bacon burger and a burger with bacon, jalapeno poppers and other assorted delights, all off the big billboard menu on the drive-thru. Plus, they have a taco shop attached.

I'm totally with you, man. I don't get it. People here in LA swear by In n Out. I have one pretty close to my house and every time I drive by, and I mean anytime of day or night--there is a line of cars at the drive thru. Whatevs!

It's a fast food burger. If you like that, fine. Maybe its a better than average fast food burger but that still makes it pretty unappealing but I'm just not a fast food guy.

And their fries suck too :)

It's good to hear an LA guy weigh in. Thought maybe it was better out there and the ones inland were just kind of inferior spinoffs. Seems like a case of the hype taking on a life its own.

I can see if you like it, even call it your favorite, but when people travel out west, and not even necessarily to California, and that's all they can talk about eating? No.

I kind of feel the same way about the Shake Shack on 8th Ave & 44th in NYC. Every time I go past there, regardless of the time, there is a long line. And often the line wraps out the door and around the block.

Now I like Shake Shack, and I go there often enough. But it isn't so good that I would stand in a 40 minute line to order. Even though I like the place, I just can't get the appeal that people are willing to wait in long lines.

(And at least with Shake Shack, I like to think that some of the revenue is somehow finding their way back to Rutgers Athletics.)

Just learned about the "off menu" just last year. Kind of funny when you think about it for a chain.

I've noticed throughout the years, including on this board .. that some of you people call a pizza a pie. A pie is cherry pie, apple pie, cream pie, pecan pie, etc... but it's not a pizza. People have coffee and pie. A pizza is a pizza .. not a pie. Only communist call a pizza a pie tmk. So for those of you who travel to Seattle for the RU vs UW game and you want to order a pizza .. don't be asking for a pie or chances are you will be arrested and locked up for being a communist subversive.

What is it about In N Out burger? I see people rave about this place all the time, but it makes some of the most straightforward, "meh" burgers I've ever eaten. And it has like three options on the menu. Not bad, but why does it get so much praise?

I have one within 10 minutes, and I can think of 10 other burger places I'd go before going there.

Totally agree! Boring burger.

I also think with In N Out Burger, it is more about it being a novelty for us east coasters. I never feel like I am in Vegas unless we stop at InNOut.

Dawg has not resurfaced in a while now. I wonder if he got introduced to another Jersey tradition. The Jimmy Hoffa.

This is basically the point I was trying to make. While I both live and work within walking distance of a Shake Shack and find their burgers to be quite tasty, I wouldn't go there to eat more than once a month or so. It's simply too heavy for everyday lunch, not worth waiting in the sometimes long lines at lunch hour, and if I had it too often the enjoyment would be lessened. Smashburger is surprisingly good as well, but more of a sit-down spot. In terms of other fast food, I even can't remember the last time I've had burgers at McDonald's or Wendy's; Burger King on Busch campus was convenient for at least one meal a week.

Comparatively, In N Out has great burgers and freshly made fries. I've traveled out to California & Nevada a total of three times to date, happened to eat there once on every trip, and each time I enjoyed their fare thoroughly. And again, we're strictly speaking fast food burgers here; I've also made it out to several nice restaurants and sit-down spots on my trips as well.

Its a decent burger, but there are around at least 20 burgers in the city that'd I'd rather have. The only time I ever really go eat there is in the winter time when there's no line.

Shortly after moving to California I stopped into a place with huge signs saying "New York Style Pizza" and ordered a stromboli off of the menu. 10-15 minutes later they served me a calzone. Then they looked at me like I had 2 heads when I was adamant that they were serving me someone else's meal. They continued insisting that the calzone was, in fact, a stromboli.

I ended up eating the calzone, but not only disappointed that I didn't get what I had ordered but that it was completely bland and raw on the inside and burned on outside.

So the energy of the Strip, endless din of slot machines, hooker collector card-littered sidewalks, showgirls and impersonators don't drop a hint :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

And cheddar cheese, pineapple, broccoli, and a few other things simply don't belong on a pie. There, I feel better.
Maybe, but you don't look better. Strawberry's Pub's bacon-cheddar is quite possibly the best pizza in the United States. So don't tell me about cheddar not belonging on pizza.

Great thread.

Great thread. But I'm not sure if I should be making fun of Washingtonians or Alaskans. Guess I'll go with both, just to cover my bases.

In Alaska going " animal style" has a different meaning than it does at In N Out

You are not paying attention...if it has cheddar it ain't pizza. Disqualified

Btw- who the F live in NJ and goes to a g*d damn Olive Garden?

Kind of like going to a Red Lobster in Main or the north west.

There are none here on Staten Island and Carraba's had a short visit before they left.
The only Pizza Hut, Domino's or Papa John's are delivery or take-out only and they are usually where you wouldn't take
your family out.

It was the same question that I had when I moved to SoCal about Taco Bell, considering all the great hole in the wall Mexican places here. Then someone informed me, Taco Bell isn't Mexican food. Then it all made sense.

Another highly disturbing pizza faux pas--CHEDDAR.

Cheddar cheese on pizza IMMEDIATELY disqualifies it from being good.

I know of one famous Seaside Heights pizza that bills itself as a tomato pie who uses cheddar. Blech!

So does fruit, example pineapple. I eat fruit with my cereal or yogurt. It doesn't belong on pizza

no one calls it "plain" out here, they call it "cheese"....like you're gonna order a pizza with no cheese. I ask for plain and every time they say, "plain? what?"

Same in PA in the Philly area. A plain pie is a "cheese" pizza. I still refuse to say "cheese pizza" unless I'm misunderstood.

Growing up in Central Jersey, I've heard the term "tomato pie", but always assumed it was describing pizza. In the Philly area a "Tomato Pie" is basically a Sicilian with sauce only and no cheese. And it's served cold. And it looks just like this.

The last thing I would eat while visiting Seattle is pizza. I would definitely indulge in some smoked salmon though.

Red Lobster is the grossest of gross chain restaurants. They had one thing going for them. All you can eat crab legs. But they stopped that 10 or more years ago. Go anywhere where there's a beach and you know what you won't find. A f--king Red Lobster. That should tell anyone all they need to know. </end rant>
