Just reported that some meat processing plants have shut down, leading to fears of a massive meat shortage. Start your engines and head to the grocery store to stock up/hoard as much as possible. 0__0

Looks like tomorrow morning = Sam's. I may pick up another small chest freezer and stuff to fill it.

Look on the bright side of this . Less meat better health. Eat more fish and vegetables. This country has eaten much to much meat ...pork, beef , chicken is just bad for your health.

Right now the biggest has been Smithfield Farms closed one of their plants in South Dakota. The company is the largest processor of pork products in the world. The good news is from a quality standpoint they won't be missed. Refrigerated meat inventories are high at this time.
The problem isn't supply. Farmers will just have to work really hard to find new slaughterhouses/processors. Stores like Acme and Wal-Mart that don't have butcher's will feel the pain first. Places like most ShopRite's that have meat departments with actual butchers will do much better.

Acme has butchers
Not the ones in PA. They have meat department employees but they cut less than 10% of their product and from Trenton to Philly they have the smallest meat departments I've ever seen. All prepackaged meats.

I'm sure the data is out there somewhere but how much meat is produced in NJ/NY/PA? How much of that is processed by the big companies?

My wife placed an order with Rastelli’s. Got shorted on a couple of SR online orders for meat. I’ll review it for everyone after delivery.

This was reported a few days ago on CNNMoney. If people didn't think this was going to effect the supply chain they weren't thinking about this to hard. My opinion is that food is going to be more expensive and the selections are going to be limited this whole year. Less people planting right now equals less food 3 or 4 months from now when it's ripe and ready to be picked. Not crazy bad but inconvenient bad where you're like all I could get were golden delicious apples because there were no honey crisps.

I just told my brother that this morning. I might even start raising my own chickens like some of the nut jobs are turning to. 0__0

Just bought a freezer over the phone from a local appliance store. So good on me. I'll pick it up in the morning then shuffle off to Sam's.

I know there are a lot of reasons they are shutting down, but I wonder how much is because of demand. With everyone eating at home instead of restaurants I would guess people are eating less and certainly wasting way less food.

Going to be an awful lot of "roadkill" going on.
May have to go back to hunting.

Many companies are now starting to only produce top 10-25-50 items.

Example ..::
You won’t see cream of onion, asparagus flavored , with butter and garlic free roam chicken soup.

Just Chicken , minestrone , potato and few basic others

No Lavender oxy clean HE allergen free Tide

Just good ole tide. Ect ect.

You want honey crisps, you just give me a call.

I got a 30 pack of toilet paper I am willing to trade for 4 chickens or 15 pounds of ground beef.

But anti hunters have told me for years how I don't need to hunt in this day and age because I can just buy meat at the store.

My wife and I went on a non-severe diet at the beginning of this thing and we’ve lost at least 5 pounds each. There’s never been an easier time to go on a diet with no fast food, no restaurant meals, and complications getting groceries.

Nothing against hunting myself, but this thread in the middle of a once-in-a-lifetime event isn't the big gotcha to prove them wrong.
