Warning to students heading to the alley this morning

Only with a special license from the state. I had one when I was in HS. I delivered for a combo grocery/store. I had to go to Newark, fill out an application, be fingerprinted, and have my picture taken. I had to have the license on me at all times.

You can work in an establishment under 21.
There shouldn't even be a drinking age. Let alone setting it at 21. Should legalize most drugs too. We are raising veal in this country and everybody from helicopter parents to the government are conspiring in it.

I'm surprised you have not offered a pro tip. Underage students should have 21 year old hookers transport their booze and blow into the alley. Problem solved.

You and I are on the same page. Tailgating lot patrol should NOT be their detail for the day.

Was just informing the rest of us who might not know why RU feels they have to have so many of the Middlesex County guys here.
This is partially their own fault IMO.

It's a big enough pie where those who don't have good table manners should not be invited back to the table.

$75-80 an hour for 8-10 hrs. Plus your fed. If you can't play ball we'll get other agencies who can.

I would consider it less of an invitation to the table as a demand they are let to the table... Or Else... This is NJ afterall. The middlesex county Sheriffs can make a lot of trouble for a college campus in middlesex county.

Serious question...how?

I'd be more worried about NBPD, Piscataway or Highland Park much more than those guys.

The quote from the athletic department members who visited our tailgate was "that was not the agreement". Their displeasure at our retelling of the sheriff story was evident. It should be notes that the MCS who told us the story said he uses discretion & doesn't even bring his ticket book. His partner, however, was asking for ID from two girls passing by as the conversation was going on.

I sent a link to this thread to someone in athletics last night & received a reply today " Your feedback is always welcomed & we are working in how we can make the game day experience better for everyone including the Alley"

I was told something similar earlier in the week.

once again this is reasons students will NOT come to a game..and stay in dorms, houses off campus to drink.. you CAN NOT have multi jurisdiction law enforcement agencies,(some who do ZERO street enforcement and interaction with public as its daily function),all doing three different tolerance levels of enforcement at games.Rutgers still hasnt fixed this!!! Sheriffs officers,NJ Transit police..have ZERO idea how to interact within this enviornment and demographic. RU pd,New Brunswick and Piscataway PD need to be the lead enforcement..and interacting with tailgates, students and Rutgers athletic Dept and School needs to get its act together and have a uniform message to all law enforcement, working this detail,on what is to be enforced..they are hiring the police as an extra duty job.. unreal..you wonder why student section is half empty?

Wait. Were you or were you not the one who was chastising RU fans for being unhappy about the game in Yankee stadium. I believe, to paraphrase you, that you were telling us we're in the Big Ten and we should stop acting like a small-time program.

I can certainly understand the students being unhappy with all the law enforcement hassling them at tailgates prior to the game. IMO, the cops should remain on the periphery and only intervene if there's a problem.

But, it's pretty small-time for students to not show up for the game because they are unhappy with law enforcement enforcing laws, even if the laws are stupid and the cops are being overzealous.

I grew in a different state and different time when the drinking age was 18 (and it wasn't that strictly enforced). I recall before my high school graduation. My friend and I miscalculated and got there too early. Instead of waiting, we stopped into a local bar for a beer, and many of our HS teachers were in the same place. They invited us over and we had a beer together with them ... I suspect current HS and even college students could not imagine having a beer with their teachers.

It's small time that the students don't want to get a $300 ticket for underage drinking? Come on.

The blue lot used to be awesome as a student. It was intimidating to opposing fans to have to walk down the road between the blue and yellow lots to see all the students out and about. Now the blue lot is lame.

For The Alley, do the kids have to show ID to get in? If so I think it was a very smart idea.

During my tailgate yesterday, yellow lot, I saw two Sherriff guys walking down our aisle and was surprised they were walking the lots. My son and his classmates tailgate with us , they are now about 26 years old. I watched how the two officers stopped a few feet away from them watched what they were doing and started walking towards them. I then offered them some water or food. Very rudely ignored my very sincere offer and asked if they were with my tailgate. I said they were and why would they care. Thier reply was "underage drinking".

I luckily did not lose my temper, and pretty much said all of them are class of 2012 RU graduates and if you can do the math then figure it out, they walked away.

Point of the story is, they were purposely scanning the lots for underage drinking.

No, that's a horrible idea. The Alley was the best idea Hobbs and co. have had yet, and will improve student attendance dramatically if the team shows any signs of life.

And that's why this kind of stuff @RC1978 is talking about will continue to happen...

This kind of thing for these guys is not in their wheelhouse.

Keep them around but put them at the entrance and inside the Stadium. No reason to have them anywhere else. Also by doing this it frees up RUPD to be out an about.

The Middlesex County Sheriffs are the absolute worst and the AD department needs to do everything in their power to limit their duties to standing by the dumpsters in front of the stadium.

please stop it...if you are underage and carrying cases of beer you are going to be ticketed..thats just how it works

if the students could control themselves in the first place things would have never changed. For years students tailgated underage in the blue lot without much if any incident. There was rarely gestapo patrols. Yes you saw underage kids being written up but everybody blended in. RU isnt just going to totally allow a free for all for underage kids. These kids need to wise up. Either drink the beer from somewhere you know in the Alley or find some more resourceful way to sneak it in

Lol.

+1

They still get to be the "tough guys" and stay out of our hair.

Win-win.

This twenty year old senior had previously never even received a parking ticket
The kid was cool about it (but maybe it was shock) but his alumni Dad was super pissed and had to be walked away from the situation.
Anyone else in Yellow get hassled?
Pretty sure Rutgers won't be seeing any donations from this family
There was absolutely no reason for this to occur.

If they're not IDing then the cops are just going to break it up just like they did the Blue lot. If something is school sponsored and there is underage drinking going on its probably the worst situation possible.

It would be smart to ID. As a former risk management chair of a fraternity it's exactly what we did when we had parties along with hiring a bouncer. We never got in trouble for parties because of it and because if it we are one if the lone fraternities who haven't gotten booted out of their houses.

Hi Elmira. I grew up 60 miles south. The drinking age was 21 but no one cared. We used to say "if you could get a dime up on the bar you could get a beer." The bars were supposed to close at 2am M-F and midnight on Sat (Catholic church rule so people would theoretically be able to go to church in the morning). Also were supposed to be closed all day Sun. Did they follow those rules? NO. Just meant at those "closed" times, they locked the front door and opened the back one. We did have some lives lost to drunk driving, but it was just considered part of life. We also did not have a drug problem and we turned out as many doctors, lawyers, business leaders, etc. as any other generation.

Now we have a generation, or 3, of liberals who all want to tell us what is good for us and how to lead our lives. In my time the politicians (democrats where I come from) were happy just being corrupt and other wise wanted their constituents to be happy and like politicians.

Kids these days just need to learn that we could drag race on highways, drink at 13, tear down goalposts, torch the ROTC house, and still have a future. They're so dang entitled!

good for you 1978, good for you.

I am a BIG personal responsibility guy and I get the challenges of today... and I even was going to jump all over the OP for the GOON reference. But after reading this thread I can see there indeed appears to be a real issue with this group.

There has to be a balance and common sense approach. Before they shoot somebody.

Public intoxication is one thing. Participation in the enjoyment of college life needs to be considered as it is part of the growing process.

Simple solution:
Rutgers should ask for a list of the students issued citations along with the list of the arresting officers.

Those officers should be placed on a list of officers strictly prohibited from working Rutgers games.

They decide: Do they want the OT, or do they want to fill up their ticket books shooting fish in a barrel?

I would suspect the same.

We were in yellow, pretty close to the front. Didn't have any issues. I offered water to any LEOs walking by, as usual. Now that they aren't riding the ATVs up and down the rows (which was really stupid), things seem fine.

There was carry-over to posts made in another thread by the person I responded to that you must not be aware of, or you'd understand where I was coming from. Maybe.

In any event, I didn't say it was cool for students to be ticketed, in fact I said the opposite.

But yeah, not attending a football game because you can't drink in public is small time. You think OSU students wouldn't show up for their games if they couldn't get drunk in public beforehand?

We'll likely never know. I doubt that Columbus police would ever crack down against OSU students that weren't starting fights, etc.

Perhaps because their buzz wore off from pregaming on College Avenue by then and they could no longer tolerate watching Laviano under center?

This would go over well in the press.

Why would you want to discriminate against students who don't have ID?
Because there is alcohol there. Imagine the headlines. This is a school sponsored event and the AD was just video taped drinking a beer. If there are underage kids there do you think they are drinking soda? What is stopping the cops from going to the alley?

When I was there two season ago, they had a heavy police presence all over town and people were carded when they tried to enter public drinking areas. Non-drinking-age kids were given wristbands, IIRC.

Walking into the stadium, they had a SWAT team, fully geared up, on the street in front of the stadium along with a large Armored vehicle they've purchased from the military.

My guess is that underage kids at OSU find somewhere (off-campus housing would be my guess) to drink. I doubt seriously if the school designates an area for officially sanctioned underage drinking.

I think having a drinking age is stupid. I think hassling college kids that want to drink is stupid. But if I was an RU student, I would not have some ridiculous expectation that RU will somehow tell the police or sheriffs that they may not enforce the laws of the state. I might hope the laws wouldn't be enforced. But I wouldn't expect it.

You're right, it is lame without students passing out inside your tailgate area, stealing your food and alcohol, knocking over tables of food, squeezing over 100 kids behind 1 or 2 vehicles, having a full blown sound system warming up your eardrums for the scoreboard, urinating between the cars in your tailgate - damn I miss that!
