Warning to students heading to the alley this morning

How much does a Middlesex Count Sheriff's Officer get paid for the day to harass Rutgers fans? Obviously, there is some hidden agenda. Unless they are jerks, why?

The kid said it was okay to look in the bag. What a rotten lie!

You're right, it is lame without students passing out inside your tailgate area, stealing your food and alcohol, knocking over tables of food, squeezing over 100 kids behind 1 or 2 vehicles, having a full blown sound system warming up your eardrums for the scoreboard, urinating between the cars in your tailgate - damn I miss that!
Then tailgate somewhere else. It's people like you who complained that brought about the police patrolling the way they do and why the students are no longer in the blue lot. The same people who complain about the students not showing up early are the same who complained about their antics while tailgating. They are also the same people who don't participate in any of the cheers and sit all game.

Oh and get off my lawn.

The students are no longer in the blue lot because there's a 30+ priority point limit to park there.

But don't let... ya know... actual facts get in the way of your stupid argument.

So you don't think maybe the students that were out of control, passing out, knocking over tables, stealing food and drinks, and urinating between cars had anything to do with the students no longer being in the blue lot?

Stupid argument? You ever hear of the secondary market? How do you think students got their blue lot passes? How do you think a large number of tailgaters get their lot passes?

They are not there because of the cops, not because of priority points. The cops are there because people complained. Good job. You just killed a great experience for a bunch of students and killed a large part of the game day atmosphere.

Yes.

People who pay $1000 a year to park there complained about drunk students stealing food and alcohol, knocking over tables, urinating between cars, etc.

Damn. Whatever is wrong with those people. They must be real assholes.

Oh wait...

Yeah, you're NEVER going to win this argument. You've been prattling on this same way for 2 years and you look just as stupid now as then.

Students disrupt others tailgates and steal shit. Students are moved out of lot. And somehow it's the fault of the of the people whose tailgates got disrupted and had their stuff stolen?

That logic is right up there with blaming rape victims for being too attractive.

Well then I guess you got what you wanted then. Don't complain about the police presence then. Don't complain about students not being there early.

College kids drink, listen to loud music and get crazy. It's part of being in college.

Just because I have a different perspective on things because I was in college within the past 40 years doesn't mean I have a stupid argument. The majority of people under the age of 50 probably agree with me.

Wow, what a DB you are.

For your information, there are people who pay a hell of a lot of money to have a nice tailgate in the Blue Lot, the Yellow Lot, the Scarlet Lot, the Green Lot, you name it. And to have anyone, students, alumni, visiting fans, etc. exhibit that kind of behavior is unacceptable. Period.

By the way, I'm not one of those who complained, but I support those who did. Particularly since we're now in the big time, in the Big Ten, whose teams bring a lot of fans to these games. So the last thing we want is to be painted by what was happening in that lot.

As for your last comment about those who complained being people who don't participate in cheering on the team, you couldn't be more wrong. They are some of the most fervent, ardent, loud-mouthed (sorry, couldn't help slip that in :D) fans that I know.

So you fail miserably with your comments and demonstrate your ignorance in the process. Congratulations!

No. They don't.

No. They don't.

At tailgates ? Yes, they most definitely do. Especially with a team that's been bad for 2 years, and crappy opponents with a crappy noon kickoff. Iowa probably won't be much different, if the very slow ticket /parking pass market is an indicator.
Michigan should be a bit better.

Not all of them. I don't drink, and while I love loud music, I am respectful of my neighbors wherever I am listening to my music, and when I get crazy, I don't disturb others. I had a fantastic time at college without being a drunken jagaloon.

I am under 50. And I know quite a few kids going off to college who have taken a pledge that they will not drink alcohol. They will have a great time too.

Of course, there will always be the few that ruin it for the bunch. The majority of the students were just there to have a good time they weren't all drunken buffoons.

Then you should turn your ire toward the drunken buffoons, and not the paying customers who chose to not tolerate their buffoonery.

But the ones that did ruin it ruined it for everyone. Very unfortunate. While I don't drink, I don't live like puritan. I recall walking through the blue lot a few years ago, and the behavior of some students was pretty appalling.

I'm not disagreeing with you that there isn't appalling behaviour. But that happens everywhere. It happens at Big Ten Universities. It happens at ivy league universities. Is the answer these ridiculous cop patrols that we currently have? Absolutely not. Students don't tailgate anymore anywhere close to what they used to and it's BECAUSE of the cops. If you think that's a positive for Rutgers you couldn't be more wrong. I worry this is hurting the student experience and game day atmosphere and it definitely hurts student attendance.

I can't see how that's not a reasonable stance.

most if not all Big 10 schools do not give students primo parking spots near the stadium, usually they are seperated somewhat

My daughter told me today for the Penn St game her alum sisters at her sorority and Alum Frat friends have 6 blue parking passes for the game. They have 160 responses so far. Something like a class reunion.

Perhaps because their buzz wore off from pregaming on College Avenue by then and they could no longer tolerate watching Laviano under center?
That is definitely true. I did the same with Ryan Love but usually left way before halftime. So I get it.

So you're saying you agree it's okay for drunk kids to steal food and drinks from the tailgate next to them? Really? I don't think so.

If it was just loud music, or even just an occasional piss between cars, I'm guessing that could've been handled w/out involving the school. I wasn't there, but I recall hearing from several different, unrelated, forum members that they tried to handle it on their own, but that in more than one instance, the kids were completely out of control.

It's ridiculous to expect other tailgaters to put up with that just because college kids get crazy. I was totally nuts in college, but I didn't steal anything from anybody or piss on people's cars. And although I wasn't always initially considerate, when reminded, I became considerate instead of being a jackass to the people to whom I was being inconsiderate.

I'm sure it was only a few problem kids. It's still not the fault of people whose tailgates were ruined by these few that ruin things.

Serious question...how?

I'd be more worried about NBPD, Piscataway or Highland Park much more than those guys.

Well I'll venture this. The are part of the LEO community in the county Rutgers is located in. I'm sure if they want things to be difficult they can make that happen for students on campus, at the game, driving around town. I don't think this is a hard concept to grasp.

I figure a phone call or two to another agency and Bob's your Uncle.

It's a shame the kids get so much bs from the police. They should be active only if trouble occurs or if things start really getting out of hand.

Agreed but in out current litigious, politically correct society if Jimmy Drunkface gets himself run over, beaten up, falls off of something or killed somehow at a game his mommy and daddy will sue the shit out of Rutgers and everyone providing security because they looked the other way while their dipshit offspring was daring Mr. Darwin.

But they'll have MORE fun if they drink.

Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to have fun. [winking]

Yeah, the school handled it pretty poorly. They should have separated the students from the rest of the blue lot. The Alley was really a great idea. I'm just worried it gets ruined by the police presence as well. I mean there is obviously drinking going on. Are there underage students there?

Agree with: students shouldn't get prime parking spots without approiate qualifications

Disagree with: the ridiculous harassment of students, and fans in general (see: my group of 35+ somethings 2 years ago in the purple lot, as well as the group next to and across from us, one game...), by officers (regardless RU, Piscataway, or Middlesex) throughout the lots. Plowing through tailgates of people who donate even a single $, with your 4-wheeler, is completely unnecessary IMHO. I also believe that waiting for students to walk into a specific area, with alcohol - 21 or not - is entrapment. Let the kids have their fun UNTIL it warrants otherwise. Just my thoughts although I'm quite sure some here will disagree with me.

Thankfully when I was in school, the police did not harass the student tailgates.

Not at all, just saying that's what a lot of students do at tailgates. To expect otherwise is being naive.

Okay.

Other than game day most people only deal with these types when they hear the phrase, "All rise..." And if you're hearing that as a Rutgers student you have a LOT more to be concerned about than your next tailgate.

Again, you have much more to worry with the real guys on a daily basis as opposed to the JV.

Okay. That's certainly true. And I'm with the students - I think they should be left alone to have fun (now that they are in a location where they aren't ruining things for other tailgaters).

I guess we should give Hobbs some props..he showed up in student Alley..told cops there to lay off the over enforcement and even got up and spoke..hoisting a beer..its on twitter..
Too bad the other LEO groups that never deal with the public as daily calls for service as its primary function ,like NJ transit,Middlesex County Sherriffs (and still dont have the experience to deal with this demographic of fan base.),they continued onward in other lots with over enforcement instead of just ensuring saftey and well being of crowd control ,and reacting when there was issue, not looking for problems and creating them with zero discretion.

this..UNLESS there is a reason otherwise to engage them based on public or personal safety. At the same time the students ought to understand that they are being given a opportunity. (I know, rather idealist)

Agree 100%.

Screw this up and you only have yourselves to blame.
