Coming up on CBS News at 11:00 - "Rutgers ranks top of the list - BUT not something colleges and Universities want to be known for ". WTF?

Well #1 - I'm never up at 11:00 unless I'm partying with my wife and that happens every decade or so and I'm totally not into the news at 11:00 anyway.
#2- If it's important- you would have said it at 6:00.
And by the way - Lonnie never got a forecast right in the past 5 years...

That's probably more to do with women being empowered and encouraged to report them than there being a higher rate than elsewhere.

Exactly. If you look at the top 20, its mostly schools you'd expect to find higher "reported" rapes vs other schools, while the schools you would expect to find "unreported" rapes are nowhere to be found... *coughBAYLORcough*

....that bastion of "Christian" values. Lmao.

Back in the day I think it was STDs ... Might be that

There's nothing factually incorrect (I assume) in that article, yet it is obviously designed to catch greater negative attention than it deserves since the rate isn't mentioned until 5 paragraphs in. If this was written as a scientific paper it would be rejected, but it's "journalism" so it did its job. Yuck.

That STD study that someone mentioned is a good example. If I remember correctly, all they found was that the background rate of HPV was very high and RU researchers just used the students they evaluated as an example of a population. There was no comparison made and the media misrepresented it immediately.

actually, it was the number of reported rapes in 2014....Rutgers tied for 7th in the nation with 32 reported rapes for the year. The information was posted because of the rape of the unconscious woman out Stanford and the slap on the wrist of 6 months in county jail and the possibility of time off for good behavior for her rapist.

the list of reported rapes in 2014
  1. Brown University 43
  2. University of Connecticut 43
  3. Dartmouth College 42
  4. Wesleyan University 37
  5. University of Virginia 35
  6. Harvard University 33
  7. University of North Carolina at Charlotte 32
  8. Rutgers University-New Brunswick 32
  9. University of Vermont 27
  10. Stanford University 26
  11. Emory University 25
  12. George Washington University 23
  13. Boston College 22
  14. University of Pittsburgh 20
  15. Ohio State University 20
  16. Williams College 19
  17. University of New Hampshire 19
  18. Ohio University 19
  19. Reed College 18
  20. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 18

It's interesting to see 3 of the Ivy League schools high on the lift ss well as a few other "elite" schools. The question is are these schools being more honest than others in their reporting. Given the size of Rutgers compared to most of the schools listed Rutgers stats do not appear to be that negative. If one would go by reported incidents vs student population Rutgers wouldn't be in the top 20. And I am also sure there unfortunately are many unreported incidents at most schools.

As mentioned above, the silver lining regarding this matter is that unlike the large majority of school, RU may be at the vanguard of rape prevention, reporting and law enforcement. There is evidence that a large chunk of private and other large state colleges (read South) deliberately preclude accurate reporting and often even cover up allegations of rape.

without question there are many more unreported rapes.

A lot has to do with the support system for the woman and for the actual report process. I'm under the impression from recent New stories that many colleges either downplay or ignore these situations. I am sad at the numbers accommodated with Rutgers but in the sake respect glad that these horrible happening s are not covered up to protect the University.

Reported rapes and the ranking here are meaningless. It is a junk statistic that really tells you nothing. To the points mentioned, it could be good news or it could be bad news. It is logically flawed and can't even be correlated with anything let only have a causation component tied to it.

If we were first in the stateamong colleges and universities in terms of incidents per thousand, I could see some of the reporting here. But we are not.

Why wasn't UConn the lead in this news story? Don't they own New York and the associated media market?
