Whole original bad take posted the night of the lafayette loss below

Its not secret that im not the biggest pike fan as the head coach of a big ten program. He is a GREAT man but a very subpar basketball coach.

1) he doesnt recruit well enough for what this job requires
2) hes stuck in the 80’s with his coaching philosophy
3) he doesnt run an offense

the reason we should fire him after this season is because he refuses to adjust his mindset. Hes too afraid of hurting feelings of players rather than putting winning first. If you think this season is bad whats gonna happen next year when we lose our one player capable of scoring (ron)? Hes shown a reluctancy to really go hard at the transfer portal. Yes hes plugged a hole here and there but hes also turned down guys like jahvon quinerly and luther muhammad who wanted to come home! Think about that!

so what’ll now happen. This year we go 3-17 in big ten play and everyone is disappointed but says, “but guys he got us to the tourney and we hadnt been in 3 decades, give him some leash”. Thats just the loser mindset of this fan base because we have buried the bar of what we should expect here. Next year we follow it up with another awful season and now the noise is palpable but we punt the decision one more year. 2023-2024 season is the 3rd straight bad year and we have no choice but to make a coaching change and now the 2024 season starts with a new coach rebuilding taking a few years to get us back to the tourney where we should expect to be every year.

we could start the proper rebuild with a new coach next season but we all know it wont happen for both financial reasons and because of how low the bar is here. But this is inevitable, everyone sees whats coming but we’ll put it off and settle for having a bad team for more years than we need to. I’ll be sure to bump this in march 2024.

I'm not the biggest Pikiell fan either but your post is wrong. He should and will get a long leash because of the last two seasons. I hate the way he schedules, I don't like his roster construction, I don't think the things he emphasizes... that's all true but he got us to the tournament doing it his way. So he gets to keep doing it his way until it's proven not to work.

Truth bomb and you’re right on all of it. I’d give him next year as realistically it’ll never happen this year. If he hasn’t done so already he needs to change his philosophy from top to bottom. This I don’t coach offense stuff has got to stop. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because the ball stoppers left the program and we had better “chemistry” this year. I expected to see a different offense with more ball movement and some sort of plan. Not only have I not seen it; we don’t even play hard anymore . We got outrebounded by a bottom level patriot league team. Believe me when I say high school teams run a more sophisticated offense ; trust me as I’ve scouted and coached for 15 years. I think he has definitely lost the locker room and that is the first step. Question is; what kind of program would we be without Pike and who could we attract ?

We’d be a bad program without him. We have 30 years of evidence proving it. We’d likely attract someone with a lackluster pedigree who would be fired after 3-4 below average seasons.

Last year’s run bought him 3 more years . Unless we are completely awful this year and next. I am it not saying this is right , but we are rutgers.

Kyk is a fvcking loser who thinks he knows better than the coaches. I have never seen a bigger baby than kyk who cries boohoo after every loss. I would rather he cry into his pillow than pollute our board with his negative spin on everything. What a douche!

I also hate the scheduling too

I also agree this thread is a year and a half too soon

Both melodramatic hypotheticals. Let’s get more than 5 games out from our first (should have been second) tournament appearance in 30 years before collecting the buyout donations.
I don’t want Pike fired.
The reality and recruiting consequences of a non competitive 1 or 2 win conference record will be something Pike has to deal with.
If you really think we’re going to play well against conference foes, don’t know what to tell you

For what were paying pike, the facilities, the home court advantage, big ten, recruiting grounds? This is a VERY attractive job. I think Mike Boynton (OK State coach and NYC native) would take it in a heartbeat. Call me crazy but wed be able to basically double kevin willards salary and he wouldnt even have to move from his home in westfield. That’ll never happen tho, he wouldnt do it haha.

You’re getting ahead of yourself. If they play like they have been a terrible conference record is likely but there are a lot of games left. Let’s see what they look like after they gel (which needs to be soon).

Again, im being realistic in saying hes here til march 2024, just saying its inevitable and being that it is wed be best to move on march 2022 but we wont

Thanks Kyk but I don't need therapy from a dude who sounds like he is suicidal after every rutgers loss. Pike has showed success in the past and deserves some deference to right the ship. He took a group of no names to march madness and the NCAA's. Maybe we do take a step back this season, who knows. Lets first see how the season develops.

We could lose every game this season and you still don't fire Pikiell. You wouldn't be able to hire any kind of decent coach -- their agent would tell them "don't go there, they fired the guy who broke a 30 year drought one year later."

It may be illogical but... the world is illogical.

We are seeing the issues with bad recruiting and not hopping on the transfer wagon. The frosh class last year is basically a waste unless you count Jones who the jury is still out on. You either get with the transfer trend or get left behind. You have to play the recruiting game somewhat or you are left with what we have ; all developmental players and that’s no way to build a big ten roster

No names? Haha you mean one of oregons top players? A starter on a team coming off a final 4? A starter on a big east team projected to dance? Then the others? Lol.

Haha i actually am quite calm after RU basketball losses. usually just because ive been in the acceptance stage for what pike is for years at this point. My expectations are pretty low. You my friend seem unhinged tho haha

I’d love Boykin as I think he’d recruit his ass off and that’s half the battle. Unfortunately I think we have Pike for this year , next year and the year after at a minimum unless it gets so bad this year and next

I totally agree with you. As i titled the thread haha, i think hes here til march 2024 unfortunately

He’s here this year and next. But if we lose badly over the next two seasons then he may go. Right now I’m just really down on him

Hi- Mike Boynton's Oklahoma State lost to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies this year. So he's got that going for him. 👍

Yup, bad loss. He beat natty champs baylor last year ;).
Oakland also ranked right by umass and beat a pretty good vermont team as well and lost to bobby huggins by 7. Still a bad loss tho.

why do you think he's lost the locker room? It's only the 5th game of a long season. If true that's horrible but it's also a stain on Ron and Geo as veterans of the program. You would think they would exhibit some leadership ....

Can you imagine the buyout the next coach would demand if we fire the guy who took us from like #275 to two* consecutive tournaments in four years a SINGLE year removed from the 2nd tournament?

Look, I agree with you that Rutgers should compete for championships. I agree that the bar here is very low and there are a number of fans here who would be content with constant mediocrity. I am not one of those fans. That said, I think you absolutely need to take account of the culture and reputation of failure this program had for decades. You cannot demand championships immediately. Pike has, so far (this season's beginning excepted) done as well as you could reasonably expect anyone who wasn't an absolute legend to do.

Pike simply needs to be given time to either (a) recruit players good enough to win with his coaching style (this is not impossible) or (b) improve his offensive coaching. If he can't do one of these things he will eventually need to be fired. But this is not the year barring something insane like a scandal or like 20 fifty point losses in conference play.

* yes I know there was no tournament in 2020 but I am tired of typing "tournament quality team". You know what I mean.

I say that because his veteran players ( geo mainly) are not playing hard or able to get the guys up for the game. We used to outrebounded Big ten teams routinely and now we are getting outrebounded by last place patriot league teams by 16 boards. That speaks to effort and a lack of motivation from our players

There are MAJOR issues but not sure iI put it all in him. He’s the top of the pyramid, however, so it’s on him regardless.

The highlighted narrative is always mentioned but factually its a fallacy. Look at SEC football where coaches get fired everywhere after 2 years or just 2 years after a natty and the next coach doesnt get an unheard of buyout

Yes because they get top salaries and are generally big name coaches coming to schools that recruit themselves. You think this is somehow comparable to Rutgers basketball?? We can dream of a future like that but it is absolutely not reality.

We could give another coach pikes identical contract and wed have a longgggg list of legitimate suitors who would drop everything to take this job. This is a really attractive job now

Rutgers basketball has almost nothing in common with any SEC football school.
