When to start fertalizing the lawn ??? (2016 thread)

Tenacity (mesotrione) will take Nimblewill out. Please follow the label, though, since it is very powerful and is fine if used as directed but can adversely impact desirable turf if not used properly. Not cheap either but a little goes a long way. It's based on the natural effect of the bottle brush plant. Note that it can bleach desirable turf temporarily. This is a product that the base use is 4 oz an acre so you don't want to be imprecise.

I have large patches (brown now, but starting to green up) of nimblewill. Tenacity is the only product I've found on the internet that will kill that weed.

Have you yourself ever used this herbicide on your lawn? I hesitate because everything I've read about it indicates that (as you said above) it not only turns this weed white to kill it but also bleaches the good grass which then may take weeks before it turns green again.

What is your actual experience with tenacity?

Okay, just to clarify, I am NOT talking about putting down fertilizer. I want to reseed these areas that took a beating over the winter. Should I do it as early as possible? Or wait until it's a little warmer (consistently I mean, given today's almost 80 degree temperature)?
Seed in September if you could. Don't do it now.

Yes, I've used to successfully for several years. Follow the label and be careful with your measurements.

Ed, sorry, I was running out to get a round of golf in and didn't get to give a more thorough answer. I have personally used Tenacity (a.i. Is mesotrione) on Nimblewill, poa annua, and other "undesirables." I had excellent success against Nimblewill, and moderate to good success against poa annua (a tough one to beat). I applied as per label specifically for Nimblewill, which is 5 oz per acre rate with two or three applications two or three weeks apart. Used as directed, Tenacity will not bleach your "desirable" turf. It will bleach weedy grasses, weeds, and your turf if you apply too much. Some turf pros use it as a diagnostic at a low level because it will bleach the undesirables (they then typically spot spray to deal with the problem). You can acces the label on line and see if you are comfortable using it.

Ed, some additional info.

Thread from last year but here goes a question anyway...

seeding my front yard, it faces west and gets afternoon sun. no trees, but shade in the morning when the sun is over the back side of the house. Should I use a sun mix or sun/ shade?

phys73...thanks for telling your experience with TENACITY. I now feel confident in using it.

Simple - when ground temp is above freezing to prevent runoff into sewers/local water areas. Take a soil temp reading or just use common sense.
