Esp the NJIT coach who had to slowly build a D1 program from scratch with a middle school gym. Now that they're in a conference, they're doing pretty good.

Not familiar with Monmouth but they must be doing something right if they beat all of those P5 schools this year. Can't be all luck.

I don't know anything about the NJIT coach, so won't comment on him.

While the Monmouth story is a nice one, I don't think King Rice is much of an upgrade over EJ and I don't think you hand the keys to a P5 program over to him. I think King needs to come to gripes with the idea that at his age, building a 1st class mid major program is the most realistic goal.

I am in the minority here.....the fact that King Rice allows his bench to act like they do tells me all I need to know.

Generally speaking, I agree with you.

But I think there is a method to that madness...and it is about generating national recognition because he knows he has a team that is going to flirt with an at large bid to the tourney all year. The more they are on SportsCenter and the front page of Yahoo Sports, the better their case will be.

the committee is smarter than that. Yesterday there were an extra 3,000 people in our building last night that gave the team a huge lift. People will go because of them and then forget that they are there while they watch the game.

The bench is generating a lot of interest for them and is a marketing bonanza to their athletic department and is drawing attention from people outside of their target market.

Maybe...but in the meantime, he get's a free running commercial about his program between now and selection Sunday.

Nobody gives a crap about Monmouth beating Rutgers...yet, national media will continue to the "bench watch."

The program was on the Today Show on Sunday morning. The last time two times we were on the Today Show, Rice was calling somebody a Lithuanian ****** and Bannon was conducting naked free throw shooting contests.

Every little bit helps when you are an unknown program.

I think Engle at NJIT had the more difficult job, it was a brutal task actually. But we need a GS-type for hoops at this point. Someone with tremendous energy, vision and ties in this area- or at least can put the right staff together. We also need these facility plans to be credible when the new coach goes out to try and sell the vision. I think we're in this situation for at least another year, though.

Would hire King Rice in a heartbeat if EJ was let go.

He's played at college basketballs highest level-----been an Assistant under an outstanding HC and has shown the ability to recruit good players .

This is unfair, but given what has happened to our programs it has to be a consideration. Again unfair...really unfair.....Rice and Hurley past non basketball stuff has to be a major factor.

NO NO NO. 1. He has some personal demons he is working on. 2. He went into the stands attacking fans . That's all we need for the press to write about that and then you people would complain about a background check. Jeez.

Right now a lot of RU fans would take most names mentioned instead of retaining Jordan.
Rice-light and Hurley-older brother are names acceptable to some as long as Eddie goes.
So even the NJIT HC is going to get positive reviews, but once they are hired: the I want it now crowd will be criticizing their every move if RU MBB doesn't get turned around quickly by them.

Those willing to give Jordan 7 years to make the program a constant winner, have given up on him in year 3 and some might have jumped ship last season.
Right or wrong they have their reasons and I went from supporter to undecided.

I thought he was a bad hire on day one, and was further convinced when he lost a game 92-31.

Seven years for building a basketball program is nuts - 10 years in lunacy.

If he was going to fix things here, we would see an improving team - one heading closer to .500 then one looking a six wins. And we would also have a good recruiting class waiting to come in next year. We don't have either of these things - it wont happen for EJ - and I don't have to wait until 2020 or 2023 to tell me that.

they would be considered but definitely nowhere near the top of the list..one hit wonders don't usually work out too well

Jordan deserves to be fired. This has been an epic fail on so many levels- poor recruiting, the team has zero fundamentals and they continue to be unprepared daily. With that said, I do not want King Rice or the NJIT coach. The biggest factor will be is whether or not we have a facilities upgrade commitment.

Without a confirmed plan in place- not sure anyone takes over this sinking ship. If we do, we can reach a little higher in terms of next coach expectation- perhaps a P5 assistant or slightly more successful mid-major coach.

I'd hire King Rice tomorrow. He has a system, can recruit to his system, and plays an exciting, fun brand of hoops. I'd take a lot of coaches tomorrow though. Watching an Eddie team is like watching a SMU after they got the death penalty. It's just horrible.

King Rice is damaged goods coming here. Look what he did. The press would have a field day. Jeez Mike Rice and Julie Herman were already crucified here.

That would end up looking like the 3 that Williams tried .

Be realistic----it's a bad job.

That's ridiculous------anybody who doesn't agree with you is your mortal enemy.

I attend more games than half the guys on this board do and no one would love to have a better program to support more than I would.

But a bunch of you guys really need a reality check.

The HBC is doing an impossible job given the hand he got dealt.

Now you may not like the way it's being done and that's fair but to think that some hotshot HC is going to leave a good job to come here is just fantasy.

If and when it happens it will have to be an up and coming Assistant from a major program like NW did with Collins or a HC from a lower level program like a King Rice or a Masiello.

You obviously know nothing about me.

I've pissed off plenty of people with my negativity about the program through the years on this board.
The difference is that they know I will always bleed scarlet and that RU is my first, my last and my only team. You have to know that your screen name alone is going to rub people the wrong way.

By the way, I actually agree with your sentence that when Ed departs sometime between the end of this season and March 2017 that the choices will be a Power 5 assistant or a mid major head coach.

Yes, no one is disagreeing with that. It's just the guy's delivery.

No. Both of those coaches have done a tremendous job, but we need to finally turn the corner and get a young but seasoned P5 coach to come in and get this done. We don't need retreads. We don't need assistants of famous coaches. We need someone who has done it before at the P5 level and is will to take on this job. Think some of the coaching names who have come up here recently as well as several others not mentioned.

Young but seasoned P5 coach? So ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, PAC 12?

Won't happen unless RichardnPitino leaves Minnesota before he's fired.

Who else would leave a power 5 job to take the Rutgers job? Chance are they're getting paid well and have better support.

Think how small a group of candidates you're asking for. Young, seasoned, power 5 good and not a retread!
