A Rutgers vs Rider dual, would be better than almost any other non Big10 dual other than Cornell, Lehigh, or maybe Ok St or Mizzou. All former NJ great HS wrestlers on both sides for the most part.
Sign me up for that.
No it wouldn't. It isn't like Rider averages a ton of fans at their matches. We should wrestle VT, UVA, NCST or others.
Quads suck
Huge +1

And RU has better home attendance than NC St, and Va Tech. By a lot. RU would get a better home attendance wrestling Rider than they would NC St or Va Tech, because the NJ Wrestling community would come out to watch it . Would out draw any Big 10 home match other than Penn St, Iowa or Ohio St too.

Nah. Our attendance would be fine wrestling any of those schools over Rider. Stop thinking small time. This isn't HS.

40,000 high school fans in Atlantic City to watch HS wrestling in only 3 days. P'burg HS outdraws about 95 per cent of D1 Wrestling programs and 3/4 of the Big10.
Those HS fans are passionate and will care more about a RU v Rider match than a RU v NC St bout where they might only care about 1 matchup (141).

It doesn't matter how many HS fans go to AC or PBurg. Most of them aren't coming. Wrestling Rider does nothing to move the needle. Attendance would be virtually the same if we wrestled a ranked UVA, VT, NC ST. And frankly, I don't give a damn about getting Rider fans to attend a match. Let them wallow in their own self-pity yearning to wrestle us & get mad at their own coaches for shooting their mouths off like middle school girls.

I don't care about Rider fans either, just like I don't care about Va Tech or NC St fans. I care about match ups and seeing Rider vs RU intrigues me more than NC St or Va Tech, which by the way , would be a whole lot harder to get scheduled at the RAC than NCSt or Va Tech, MUCH HARDER.
The best OOC match we had last season was Princeton, the best home dual of the season. By far. When was the last real good OOC match you saw scheduled at the RAC? Think hard.

That's because teams don't want to leave the RAC with an L. We have gone undefeated at home twice in the last 4 seasons.

Agree with Abro. I would like to watch the NJ kids that Ive watched from middle school through HS match up with RU. Cefalo, Calas, Clagon, Tropea, Walsh. t would be a good atmosphere, more exciting than kids youve never heard of

On Saturday April 8th, Flowrestling.com will be airing the Pinning Down Autism Duals which will feature teams from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The NY team will feature a rising Senior at heavyweight named Deonte Wilson who finished in second place for both the NY state championship and the NHSCA Junior Division two weeks ago. I was really impressed by this kid. He is built like a freight train and appears to me to be a Big Ten quality athlete. I'd love to hear if any of you may have seen him wrestle at the NHSCA tournament and have any further scouting observations. If not, I would suggest checking him out this weekend. I just wonder whether he is looking for a football scholarship as the little research I did shows that he plays high school football.

Why? Who cares what state the other team's wrestlers are from? You don't need to see NJ vs NJ to see good matchups. I don't care about those who went elsewhere.

Then stay home LOL!
Seeing kids wrestle that you have watched through the years adds intrest to the matches. You dont get that?? Even out of state teams I always look to see how the NJ kids are doing. Alot of the kids have wrestled each other coming up or went to the same club.. it adds a little backdrop to the matches.
Plus you have a brother combo involved with the Correntis!

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Always enjoy seeing fellow NJ guys wrestle and do well, even when they choose to attend a college other than Rutgers.

I'll never understand the nostalgic love fest to wrestle Rider & see other NJ wrestlers compete against us. You can go to a HS match, if you want to see NJ vs NJ.

Count me among the people that don't want to see us give Rider any added visibility. Same reason its a bad idea for us to play Syracuse on football. It might be fun for the fans, but won't help our program at all. A strong Rider is bad for RU. Better to have annual Princeton-RU matches.

That's just dumb, lol.

You view sports as a business , some of us look at sports as ... sport

Perhaps, but I think that's reality. Us putting Rider on the schedule helps them recruit. We do not need any more competition for the kids in our local recruiting areas. There is no reason at all to strengthen their program by giving them a high profile home state Big Ten matchup.

I doubt any elite wrestler is going to choose Rider and whatever little conference they are in over Rutgers and the Big 10. Rutgers is the better school academic wise, Big 10 is the best conference with it's own TV network and RU will soon have new facilities. Plus you get to wrestle in front of 1500-3000 instead of 50-75.
Cmon' let's be serious.

Are you that afraid of Rider?? Wrestling is about competition and NJ is the top 5 wrestling states in the country- so Ill watch D1 NJ vs NJ all day long.
You cant compare wrestling with football just based on scholorship numbers. Its not like kids are turning down RU to go to Rider

I have no inside knowledge, but you don't think we recruited some or all of Chad Walsh, Ryan Wolfe and BJ Clagon? Those were all elite recruits that chose Rider.

Rutgers is absolutely "better" but Rider is producing as many AA's as we are of late. Wrestling them just gives them even more exposure. I am not sure how you can conclude they are not a recruiting threat. They have proven they are.

Do you think Penn St worries about recruiting when they face Lehigh every year? How about Iowa , Iowa St and N Iowa? All 3 in different conferences and none worry about the other when they wrestle each other every year.
It is very hard to schedule decent OOC home matches as it is. Rider and Princeton are perfect opponents and we wouldnt even have to give Rider a return home match at their place .

"He pissed me off, so we are not wrestling them." I'm sure coaches didn't say that, but if this has any truth to it, someone needs to grow up.

Dont forget that grades play a part on where you go

The Dream Team Classic, in its 20th edition, is being held this year at Elmhurst College just outside of Chicago, Illinois. Sponsored by Wrestling USA Magazine and presented by IKWF/IL-USAW, the event will be on Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. CT, featuring some of the nation's best seniors against those from the host state of Illinois. A live webcast will be provided by Trackwrestling. Below is an overview of the matches.

152: No. 4 Stephan Glasgow (Bound Brook, N.J.) vs. No. 6 Austin O'Connor (St. Rita)

Glasgow was a three-time state finalist in the Garden State, winning titles the last two years, including this season in a state champ vs. state champ showdown against two-time state champ Shane Griffith. He also placed third at the Super 32 Challenge in the fall, and made the finals all four years at the NHSCA grade-level nationals, winning as a freshman and senior. O'Connor is a four-time state champion, going undefeated each of the last two seasons, while amassing a career record of 181-4. He is also a two-time placer at the Super 32 Challenge, a 2015 Junior Greco-Roman runner-up, and a Cadet double All-American in 2014.

Not only does Penn St not worry, they have showcased meets v Pitt and Lehigh in front of huge crowds in last few seasons.

The more national level HS matches I see Glasgow participating in, the less I see him RSing next year. I could see JVB slimming down to 149 to fight it out with Giraldo while Glasgow bulks up to 165 next season.

Big Ten home matches are Ohio State, Penn State, Minnesota and Iowa along with Maryland at Yankee Stadium so if we can't increase our season ticket holders to the 2000 are with those teams at the RAC we should be ashamed. They will probably all be top 5 teams in the country!

Just hope we can pick off one or two of them...OSU and Minnesota being the most likely ones. Hoping for 1 or 2 big name OOC matches at home too vs someone like VT, ASU, Mizzou, NC State, UVA.

Any word of us looking hard at grad transfers or JUCOs for Heavyweight with Gross's availability in doubt for at least the first half of the season?

True, but that doesn't really have an impact in this case. Rutgers accepts all minimum qualifiers, just like Rider does. Now perhaps Goodale would back off a kid if he thought he would be able to handle his schoolwork, but that can be said about anywhere. That is actually my reason for liking the Princieton matchup, as, by and large, we are not after the same kids. One of the biggest myths perpetuated on these message boards is that we somehow have academic standards that keep kids out. Its not true. If they clear NCAA, they can come to Rutgers.

You are entitled to your opinion. But, IMHO, you are not seeing the big picture. PSU and Iowa are in a totally different place than RU. The comparison is silly. We now have a huge advantage in conference affiliation that we can use to move ourselves in front of other eastern teams. In Rider's case, that advantage is negated by giving them a showcase matchup against Rutgers with a chance to proclaim themselves as the top school in NJ. RU and Rider are far closer to each other than you seem to be willing to admit. They are going head to head against us in recuriting, and winning some of those battles. They have a good coach. They finished 2 spots behind us in the NCAA's last year. It is truly a lose-lose for RU, outside of a few fans who prioritize NJ HS wrestling rematches.

These other teams you are mentioning are very well established. Rider is not. Its best we do nothing to help them establish themselves as a legitimate program.

How is tOSU one of the most likely? They might be the only team in the country with a chance to knock off PSU in a dual (not that this is likely, but they would at least have a shot if NATO returns to 125).

Here's vs. Iowa:

125 - Paetzel vs. Laux - slight edge to Laux at this time
133 - Delvecchio vs. Wagner/Happel - Delvecchio
141 - Ashnault vs. Turk/Happel - Ashnault
149 - Giraldo vs. Sorenson - Sorenson
157 - Lewis vs. Kemerer - Kemerer
165 - Grello/Van Brill/Scott vs. Marinelli - probably Marinelli
174 - Pagano vs. Young/Gunther - slight edge to Pagano
184 - Gravina vs. Wilke - Gravina
197 - Milligan vs. Holloway - who knows
285 - ??? vs. ???? - not sure if Stoll will be back but either way this is Iowa

That's a possible win. Slight edge to Iowa at this time, but definitely possible - Iowa will be down next year.

Agree that Minnesota is also possible, but not sure where they end up with weight shifts so hard to do a dual comparison right now.

No way with tOSU. Even if they don't suck NATO back down to 125 here is their lineup for next year:

125 - Rodriguez or incoming
133 - NATO
141 - Hayes
149 - Micah Jordan
157 - Ryan or BIrcher
165 - Te'Shawn Campbell
174 - Bo Jordan
184 - Myles Martin
197 - Kollin Moore
285 - Snyder

Probably only looking at about 3 wins there, maybe.

A win over wrestling royalty like Iowa would be the biggest dual win in the history of the program...down or not. Everyone would take notice.

I'm assuming you know our road B1G matches as well.

Does anyone have final D1 Wrestling attendance figures for the 2016-2017 season ? Rutgers might be among the top 4 in the country and Rutgers should have a better wrestling team next year.
