Overrated?

No sane RU fans expect or are discussing a Final Four, this is a roster of 10 new players and a returning player batch of a backup center who is not a complete basketball player, but has size you need in conference games, a very determined and pesky guard in JMIke Davis and a veteran guard playing with a banged up shoulder.

If Tyson Acuff didn't miss the entire summer of workouts and conditioning with a broken foot and this was a roster at full speed and health, then I would have concerns.

Right now (to me) we are getting plenty of mileage out of Derkack, who has outperformed expectations and Lathan Sommerville averaging 11 and 6 as a true freshman.

If anyone was asked if they would sign up for 11 and 6 this past summer, everyone immediately signs up for that, 100%. Crazy thing is, he's putting up numbers in around 23 MPG. I think it's more likely he actually gets better with more reps and minutes.

Gotta get JWill and Acuff going, then we can talk further.

GAME 4 MERRIMACK: That don't impress me much

how many Big 10 schools are going to miss those wide open 3s. See we do not defend the perimeter well and that is partly by design but this year the help defense is non existent and the centers are easily being beat by midgets and even Derkack fooled, in fact Derkack was outplayed by many of his teammates last night
In all seriousness I am not certain major conference schools shoot any better than everyone else. I'd be curious if there ever could be a study.

I think the better point is you can't expect any college basketball team to be 2-20 from 3, I know they finished 4-24

OT: Real Estate Question - Toms River/Brick and area

Sounds delightful in Delaware. Once they force upgrades to a public sewer system, the taxes and expenses will rise.

We built a house in far western NY many years ago with a septic system. The engineer who designed our system also happened to be the town official who approved the design. After we sold, there was an issue with the septic system and the buyer called for some information and was incredulous that the approval was by the same person who designed the system. It really stinks!

I see what you did there. 👍

Some cops may be pulling in $200K total in North Jersey or select towns.. but I doubt that’s the norm, or average across the state.

The average is probably closer to $150K.

Not that South Jersey is cheap, but relative to areas further north, it is definitely much easier to afford.

When people say they can't afford to live in NJ, I don't think they are talking about Cumberland or Salem County, never mind even a nicer place like Cherry Hill or Voorhees.

If people felt very strongly they must stay in NJ, they could definitely move to South Jersey but my guess is, from a cultural perspective, the thought is that Delaware is the same thing and cheaper still, fair or not.

OT: Overnight euro showing snow for this Friday evening

Below is the radar estimated rainfall for the storm so far. Looks like most have gotten between 0.75 and 1.5" in the region, which was much needed. The rain is mostly over for the Philly/SNJ with maybe only another 1/4" of rain to come, but further north there is still a decent amount to come especially north of 78 with an inch or more of additional precip likely. In addition, there's still the potential for snow late tonight into Friday for areas well NW of 95, where several inches are likely, especially above 1000' in the Poconos and maybe far NW Sussex and the Catskills, as cold air wraps in around the retrograding low. Could even be the first measurable snow (1/2" or so) for areas north of 78 and west of 287 up to the NY line and beyond. Hoping to still get mood flakes and maybe a coating here and along 95. Updated precip to come and snowfall to come maps below.

No real change. Expect some light and occasional showers, but not a constant rain, as the total rainfall forecast for that area Friday evening is still only about 0.05", which is enough to get people wet, but certainly no deluge. Temps will be around 40F with 5-10 mph winds. Below is the NWS hourly forecast.

These are good.

Straightforward and to the point.

RAPID REACTION - Merrimack

I did not watch the first half but was reading the game thread and thought what the hell is going on? And the one guy that turns every thread about this year's team into a debate about whether the team should have kept Derrick Simpson instead of jMike 🙄. Tuned in for the second half and the team looked pretty good to me.. the other kid from Merrimack was cooking but I didn't think the team looked bad at all...think ogbole played to take advantage of his size against a smaller team. Looks like they are emphasizing rebounds at the moment...let's see what they do as the competition gets tougher before we start panicking
No debate at all. Irony and hypocrisy compared to last year. Fair topic and was in a game thread where Pike quickly pulled player and many fans making exact same comments. SMH.

Team didn’t look bad at all? We play like last night in the B1G or in Vegas, we are not going to win and may get blown out.

Some positive signs, Ace showed his enormous talent. Dylan in an off game was still pretty darn good. O had his best game. Derkack nice all around game.

Some negative signs, While Sommerville has some nice moves he is becoming a black hole and no D whatsoever. Might want to nip that now. JMac was horrible defensively. No sugar coating that. Derkack can’t go 2-6. We’ve been burned defensively by Monmouth and Merrimack. I shudder what might have happened had Merrimack hit its threes.

I’ll give Acuff and Williams a pass as not sure healthy yet. Martini and Hayes need more shooting touches.

A W is a W and we will only get better but yesterday was a rough watch save for Ace and some Dylan. Nobody is panicking.

Overrated?

Our fans have over hyped this team.
2 top 3 players = final four run in some Fan's eyes.

We hopefully see a team that gets better every week and plays it's best ball by the end of the year.

It takes a while for teams with an all new roster to gel & perform up to coaches expectations.

We have lots of top talent, but they are all young. Best thing about freshman is they become sophomores (or NBA players). Just means the team should improve as we mature during the season. We are going to have a bumpy ride with ups & downs - just hope we end on the upswing.

OT: Real Estate Question - Toms River/Brick and area

And people have been leaving NJ for the past several decades due to taxes (which is why we keep bleeding congressional seats). So yes, it's not new but the morons in Trenton now are actually accelerating the problem. They are not even pretending to give a crap about solving it.

LOL. How many seats were lost in 2020?

So completely clueless.

NJ's populations keeps increasing, as well.

RAPID REACTION - Merrimack

1. Agree, Davis had a rough game
2. Disagree, thought Derkack played a step slow all night, and wasn't great defensively. Clark may not have scored in the beginning, but he had 3 or 4 assists before he ever scored a basket. He was running things.
3. Harper is still trying to figure out how to get through the clogged lanes. Too many guys that don't draw defenders out of the paint out there. They don't even follow Martini out there, he's wide open on his shots.
4.Bailey is special, nothing else needs to be said. Better on the boards than I was anticipating
5. This was our best case scenario kind of game from EO. Bigger games, he won't get fed in the post, should limit his foot shuffles.
6. Hayes was quiet. Hoping his not going to vanish as people pay attention to him because of his shooting. Although he still showed up w help on the boards.
7. Right now, Sommerville is a black hole, and also provides none of the floor spacing I heard all offseason he would. This was a night LS should have been able to dominate, the post was where opportunities were.
8. Williams is a mess right now. Awful offensively, ok defensively.
Would you as an opponents coach, leave PJ Hayes open, leave Martini open OR prefer to have Sommerville go one on one in the post......he literally fouled out a Merrimack player with 16 minutes left in the game.

You have to take what opponents provide you as options to score and take advantage.

I am pretty certain that I explained that there's a way to defend shooters who do not prove as offensive players that they can also score off the dribble. And if that player is NOT a plus defender, there will be games where Hayes and Martini are taken away.

The Merrimack game plan was to stay attached to shooters and make RU beat them off the dribble and in the post.....RU essentially did that, without much fanfare, especially when I'm fairly certain that if Sommerville plays 26 to 27 minutes, he finishes with 16 and 10 rebounds.

OT: One Word You Were Never Comfortable With

Long running joke in our office that irregardless is a word. Even the editor here redlines it because it is supposedly not a word. It's a word!
Yes, it's a word, but as I'm sure you know, it's considered substandard (and superfluous) and never used in formal writing (or even informal writing by most, since "regardless" is a much better choice).

OT: Real Estate Question - Toms River/Brick and area

I can see this happening in resort communities. Like ski places.

But if there is no room to build (for whatever reason - land, inventory, etc.), then I can see something happening down the road.

My Parents commute was an hour each way for ~40yrs. It got longer as they did better and moved to places they wanted to be. Mine is similar for almost 30.

If you want to live where you work or be close to it, decisions have to be made.

First off, there is A LOT of land to build in that area. Secondly, people will make decisions, no doubt, but it will make a lot of decisions that overlap with the complainers on affordable housing. More young people will want to work remotely. They will not return to their hometowns. They will visit their parents less and less.

I really struggle with the idea that building condos, making them an affordable price, and putting a deed restriction like "public employee" or "grew up in town" will be ruinous. But not my issue. I could afford to move back where I'm from...but wouldn't barring an exigent circumstance. And, a kid where I live has teachers and public servants that have options on where to live. I was heartened though that the mayor realized it's a problem. Eventually more will.

You do know that this is public information correct?

That is base pay without overtime, pension etc... It is not uncommon for police to increase income by $100k on minimal outside job coverage.

Some cops may be pulling in $200K total in North Jersey or select towns.. but I doubt that’s the norm, or average across the state.

The average is probably closer to $150K.

FB Recruiting 2025 DE Chase Linton decommits from Rutgers Football

Randomly looked up that George Washington quote in your signature. He apparently never said it.
Not surprising he fell for that one too - he still believes the 2020 election was stolen and believes in countless other conspiracy theories. He'll respond to this with some more BS quotes and he'll put them in bold font, thinking that makes BS more convincing, lol.

OFFICIAL 2024 Rutgers Illinois Prediction Thread

Monangai runs for over 100 yards.
Rutgers wins 21-17 in front of 49,453 hand-counted fans.

I really wouldn't mind seeing that. I think that Illinois is a rather sound team. So, I think that we really need to be playing sound football, as well. That means - no penalties, turnovers, or poor game management. We have to execute scoring drives just like we did last week. Our biggest issue right now is - do we still have enough depth?

Not feeling entirely confident about this one. But, since I'm a homer, I'm going with:
Illinois - 18
RU - 24

And, Monangai channels his inner Brian Leonard and executes the first Leonard Leap in more than a decade On the Banks.

OT: Overnight euro showing snow for this Friday evening

"INTERIOR NORTHEAST SNOWSTORM
📈
?
Fast-forming Miller-B storm Thursday night should have plenty of cold air advection by Friday morning to convert some moisture to heavy wet snow for the Pocono's/Adirondacks/Catskill mountain areas. The snow levels will be mostly confined north of I-80 for elevations over 800' but wouldn't be shocked at some snow showers getting close to #NYC ! Below is the EUROPEAN ENSEMBLES model blend showing potential for 4-6" (isolated more) in some spots
