Who was the as$wipe that voted against Ichiro? Was it only to keep him from matching Rivera's unanimous HOF ballot or did he really think he didn't deserve it?
Until Rivera, no one had been unanimous. And unless you're declaring Rivera by far the best player in the history of baseball, it's been unfair for decades. Babe Ruth wasn't unanimous. Lou Gehrig. Tom Seaver. It goes on and on. It's almost tradition of silliness.

RU Deficit

When you get the financials of our "peers" who are not Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and other schools that have much larger stadiums and fanbases that contribute to the $$$ into the Athletics department, share them, and then we can talk.

Spend within our means. The extra spending didn't do shit. It's a dumb game. There are more important things going on in the university that need $$$.
According to Sergeant’s article, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Michigan State outspent Rutgers.
No doubt we’ve increased spending to facilitate success.

You need to come to terms with the fact that the University as a whole is profitable and the Athletic Department will always lose money, hand over fist.
Robust athletics programs facilitate an appealing university environment.

It’s a slow news cycle, and the Star Ledger took its annual dump on the Athletic Department.

This years Deficit will likely increase due to increased coaching salaries and next year it will increase because we’re paying players.

But in the end, the investments are worth it.
Per the Rutgers spokesperson:

“As a member of the Big Ten, Rutgers is among the nation’s top public research universities in academics and intercollegiate athletics. Our competitive athletics programs continue to enhance Rutgers’ prominence, raise the university’s global profile, and build community among our current, future, and former students and their families,” university spokesperson Dory Devlin said in a statement to NJ Advance Media. “Our increased investments in Athletics reflect both the university’s commitment to remaining competitive in one of the best athletic conferences in America and the rising costs of travel, salaries, and benefits.

“Rutgers remains committed to, and will continue to expect, responsible investments in Scarlet Knights athletics.”

OT: NJ Devils 2024-2025 Thread

He really hasn't done much the last 2 years to suggest he should play higher in the lineup.

But what Keefe has done this year is use him pretty heavily as a defensive fwd, and he's played that role to good results.

Moving Timo and his offensive play driving ability down to the 3rd line could, and game 1 suggests it will, lead to better offensive results for Mercer.

Keefe has shown a want to keep lines together for stretches so I imagine we see Timo and Mercer together for a stretch. I'd include Dowling in there but when Haula gets back I imagine he gets that spot.
Yes it is the chicken or egg debate. Mercer will ultimately be better in an offensive role on a scoring line, but you need to leave him there through the growing pains. The NJD have been impetuous, even before General Keefe.

I haven't posted about this but a huge irritant to me is playing Timo Meier on his off wing. Yes he can play LW, but not as well. In San Jose he became a star by playing RW and being on PP1, another spot the Devils don't play him in. Looking back at LY scoring spurt, we finally put him in his tradition roles and he went off. I'm a Keefe fan, but he needs to rethink his use of Timo. In closing we haven't scored 5 goals in a game for a long time. Keep these lines overall.

Wagner, Ichiro, CC into the HoF. Looks like Beltran should get in next year.
Who was the as$wipe that voted against Ichiro? Was it only to keep him from matching Rivera's unanimous HOF ballot or did he really think he didn't deserve it? To me this is a real pus$y move that the writers allow this- - The identity of the lone voter who did not select Ichiro wasn't immediately known. BWAA Voters decide whether they want their votes to be listed publicly. Have some nads, state your name and tell us the reason you did this.

Win the next four or it’s over

If we’re 19-12 somehow before the tournament we will have enough q1 wins to get in regardless

I believe every game left besides Washington and usc will be q1

Iowa maybe q2 as well

Either way even with those 3 “wins” we’d still pick up 5-6 definitive q1 wins and would be in the field at that point to get to the theoretical
19 wins

Forget the quads. Beating NW, USC, Washington, Minny, and Iowa does nothing for us - not tournament teams. The key is not losing because of the loss count. Maryland isn’t likely to be a top half bracket team either and also won’t help that much. They haven’t really beaten anyone and taking a home loss to us would pull them down further (currently about a 9 seed).

So there are really 6 opportunities against teams that could truly help our resume. We would need to go at least 4-2 in these games minimum, on top of not losing more than 3 more times total. And oh yeah -probably would hurt us still if two of those wins were a sweep of Michigan. Not only would that send Michigan plummeting to the bottom of the bracket but the committee historically has taken more stock in beating more solid field teams rather than the same team multiple times.

If we beat 4 of those teams, plus the UCLA win we’d at least be in the conversation though very far from a lock.

so January 1982 had some brutally cold days in New Jersey. I imagine spots like High Point likely saw temps in the minus teens for a couple of days

the coldest temp at Newark was -7 on January 17 and 18.. The highs those days were 14 and 16. The coldest high temp was 11 degrees on January 11. The Freeze Bowl weekend from the 10-12th saw temps 11, 13, 15 for highs and lows of 0, -2, 2. The 13th also recorded 6 inches of snow
