Appropriate punishment for UCLA 3

This is a Dean of Students issue. They should be treated the same, not better or worse, than other students who had similar issues while representing the university.

You and I (had we done this as regular citizens) would would still be in China and would not have had POTUS interfere...

They will be celebrated and probably end up on the late night talk circuit.

Again, they should be treated the same as any other student in similar circumstances. I'm sure that this was not the first time someone taking part in a UCLA extracurricular activity off campus has done something stupid like this.

Not play a game their freshman year but keep the scholarship.
Go to class and study

Watch how fast Lavar pulls his last Kardashian son if that were to happen.

UCLA is in the business of winning basketball games, not teaching kids life lessons. He won't miss a Pac 12 game.

The boys will get a “ slap “ on the wrist as is the norm... a regular student would be expelled for st least a semester...a regular traveler?... would certainly be SH....out of luck

But the thing is they are not regular students so they shouldn’t be treated the same. Full ride, tutors, gear, meals, medical care, stipend and free trips to China. Not sure what the punishment should be but it will be interesting to see what it is

They are regular students regardless of their scholarships. There must be 1000s of other students at UCLA on all kinds of scholarships. Other than meeting the terms of their scholarships should they also be held to different, higher standards.

And all of you are experts in UCLA's student judicial code and can also cite examples of "regular" students who have been expelled for shoplifting on an official university sanctioned activity?

Absolutely. I find it funny you don’t get this.

We don’t know the full story. I’m sure one maybe two were in the wrong place at the wrong time and not all of them shoplifted....unless I missed something earlier this week

If you are on a university-sponsored trip and in the band or cheerleaders, etc, and you get in trouble, you get kicked out of the organization immediately (obviously) and then the dean takes it from there as to whether you will be kicked out of school. Now will these 3 be kicked off the team? Even at a very good school academically like UCLA, I doubt it.

Except for the fact that surveillance cameras caught them in the act of shoplifting from several high end stores near their hotel. These kids should face the Chinese legal system. It might make them appreciate where they live

I don't get it? I spent 10 years as a Special Assistant to the Provost and Assistant Director of the Office for Equity and Diversity at a B1G university after a 30 year career in the US Departments of Justice and Education primarily in non-discrimination. I routinely worked with the Dean of Students and the Division of Athletics at the university.

Believe me, I get it.

For someone with your credentials I'm surprised at your lack of reading comprehension. I didn't say they should be expelled, now did I? I specifically said I don't know what their punishment should be but it will be interesting to see what it is.

This should be placed in the hands of the most competent body. I hereby nominate the NCAA!!! :boxing:

Throw them out of school they are common thieves who brought a great deal of embarrassment to the families. School and the US. They should be thrown out of school plain and simple

6 to 10 games suspension

After the season all 3 either go pro or transfer out. The coach and athletic dept will threaten not to renew their scholarships to persuade them to leave.

Thanks for the resume. I guess its more complex that one would think or maybe in the environment you worked it tends to be more complex than it needs to be. However I come from a mindset where it's ok to fire someone who acts inappropriately at an after hours work event. I also believe that its perfectly fine to drug test welfare recipients as well as holding scholarship holders to a higher standard and larger scholarship holders to a higher standard than small scholarship holders.

Even though athletic scholarship students give back to the University in some way, they like employees and welfare recipients have their hands open in the arrangement thus should be held to a higher standard than the paying student and taxpayer. If you are a taker then you should be held to higher standards.

Steve, your credentials indicate that you have lived in the artificial world of academe during your working life, so will give you a pass. This is not a case of three garden variety UCLA students wandering in to a fancy local store in LA and doing a little recreational boosting. The team was in China to play a game, the aim of which was to further relations between the US and China. They represent American college athletes, and were expected to conduct themselves, on the court and off, with a presence that reflected well on themselves and UCLA. But no--they (one or more of them, anyway) had to do something egregiously stupid and childish, embarrassing their hosts, their team, and the United States. And you expect them to be treated in the same manner as Freddy or Frieda Freshman would be if either were picked up for shoplifting? Those three knew they were representing more then just themselves, but they did it anyway, and should not expect routine student handling.

They are too stupid to be in college. They stuck out like sore thumbs in China with all eyes on them as they went about. Yet they still tried to pilfer stuff. Guess they never heard about the Otto Warmbier story. Dumb jocks. And they get a free ride to college.
