This is a Dean of Students issue. They should be treated the same, not better or worse, than other students who had similar issues while representing the university.
Maybe if on a trip to China that the school paid for.If a regular student shoplifts, they get expelled from college?
Not play a game their freshman year but keep the scholarship.
Go to class and study
Again, they should be treated the same as any other student in similar circumstances. I'm sure that this was not the first time someone taking part in a UCLA extracurricular activity off campus has done something stupid like this.
luck
But the thing is they are not regular students so they shouldn’t be treated the same. Full ride, tutors, gear, meals, medical care, stipend and free trips to China. Not sure what the punishment should be but it will be interesting to see what it is
Absolutely. I find it funny you don’t get this. They are regular students regardless of their scholarships. There must be 1000s of other students at UCLA on all kinds of scholarships. Other than meeting the terms of their scholarships should they also be held to different, higher standards.
And all of you are experts in UCLA's student judicial code and can also cite examples of "regular" students who have been expelled for shoplifting on an official university sanctioned activity?
We don’t know the full story. I’m sure one maybe two were in the wrong place at the wrong time and not all of them shoplifted....unless I missed something earlier this week

Throw them out of school they are common thieves who brought a great deal of embarrassment to the families. School and the US. They should be thrown out of school plain and simpleAnd all of you are experts in UCLA's student judicial code and can also cite examples of "regular" students who have been expelled for shoplifting on an official university sanctioned activity?
1 year of hard labor in a Chinese sweat shop
Thanks for the resume. I guess its more complex that one would think or maybe in the environment you worked it tends to be more complex than it needs to be. However I come from a mindset where it's ok to fire someone who acts inappropriately at an after hours work event. I also believe that its perfectly fine to drug test welfare recipients as well as holding scholarship holders to a higher standard and larger scholarship holders to a higher standard than small scholarship holders.I don't get it? I spent 10 years as a Special Assistant to the Provost and Assistant Director of the Office for Equity and Diversity at a B1G university after a 30 year career in the US Departments of Justice and Education primarily in non-discrimination. I routinely worked with the Dean of Students and the Division of Athletics at the university.
Believe me, I get it.
Well said!Steve, your credentials indicate that you have lived in the artificial world of academe during your working life, so will give you a pass. This is not a case of three garden variety UCLA students wandering in to a fancy local store in LA and doing a little recreational boosting. The team was in China to play a game, the aim of which was to further relations between the US and China. They represent American college athletes, and were expected to conduct themselves, on the court and off, with a presence that reflected well on themselves and UCLA. But no--they (one or more of them, anyway) had to do something egregiously stupid and childish, embarrassing their hosts, their team, and the United States. And you expect them to be treated in the same manner as Freddy or Frieda Freshman would be if either were picked up for shoplifting? Those three knew they were representing more then just themselves, but they did it anyway, and should not expect routine student handling.
