How do you guys feel about Eddie starting Batie in the second and giving him plus minutes ? Watching the game , i think he brought a good scrappiness and grit to the team , nice passes , few plays and played solid . Honestly believe that Dadika and Goode couldn't of did any better .

I like Jake but he probably lacks the quickness to play at this level.

Batie should have earned some minutes going forward after today. He played some good games last year but this year rarely saw the court.
Batie got whipped on D way too much, but I agree his athleticism stood out today. Deserves another look at this point for sure
Agree but it's interesting that it looks like Batie and Dadika appear to have moved ahead of Goode. I don't understand what EJ ever saw in Goode to have given him an offer. He plays with no confidence, no shot , no ability to create a shot , and no quickness.
Staff never saw him play in a game before the offer. He won knockout at his practice 20 times in row and gave him a ship.
what I saw in Batie is a kid who can be a contributor down the road (especially relative to the talent we already have on the roster)

If you watch the kid in warm ups, he hits 8-10 of his three's. The kid has totally lost his confidence and to my naked eye, he doesn't try hard enough to get open. He doesn't go hard around screens, doesn't back up behind the screens, and more glaring is he doesn't look or try to shoot. To me he realizes he is not a player at this level, but doesn't do enough or try hard enough to prove anyone wrong. If he is staying the kid has to check his heart, desire, and will to succeed. I
It is really sad. He is the best shooter we have on the team .

If so I agree that he doesnt play with enough confidence. and not to pile on EJ, but how Goode has been used is one of the issues I have. The # of games he would play for significant stretches and we never ran a play to get him an open shot was damning. sure, there were times he passed up open shots, but those moments were few and far between.
my logic is simple...you have a kid on the floor who is clearly a defensive liability (Goode)...but you play him for a long stretch and do NOTHING to try and exploit his major strength?

we're down to 7 players...we dont see the practices...I'd like to see what Batie can do in game situations given the #s, the opportunity, etc.

Batie is a smallish athletic player. However, we already knew he had more athleticism than Goode and Dadika. Not sure why under the current circumstances that he wasn't getting the nod over those two who really contribute very little. Batie gave you aggressiveness, a great block on a break, a few good passes, some tough rebounding. He made some mistakes too and gets rubbed off on screens but no worse than those two on defense. At least you have 5 players to attack on offense when Batie is in the game. With Goode or Dadika it's like trying to play with 4.

Goode actually hesitated yesterday as he went up for his layup against Penn St. When I saw that it convinced me this kid doubts his ability to play at this level. Very sad and I feel sorry for Goode. It wouldn't surprise me if he transfers after the season to some Division 3 school where he's likely to shine ...
I think dadika has some skill and a BBall IQ. At least when I see him and Batie, I see basketball TEAM players. Shortcomings, yeah. But maybe had they played more earlier (at least to give the starters a blow)..they'd be able to add more now.
What don't you see ? The kid is playing scared without any confidence . He passes up shots and doesn't try hard enough to get open. The only reason Eddie is playing him , which has become less and less the last number of games, is that he has no choice.
Yes they both have some skill and Batie has some toughness to him. But they are limited and are walkons for a reason . When they play against bigger, longer players they struggle. They will make a play here or there. Eddie really has very little options right now.

what I was trying to add to the conversation, was to suggest that it's on the coach for not finding more situations to get the kid to improve his confidence. we all knew coming in that the kid is a shooter who cant really create his own shots...yet, he's playing minutes and we are not creating any situations where he has a clean look...thats on Eddie.
Cannot create situations if the kid is scared to play, scared to shoot, scared to move to get open, scared to try harder. That is on the kid. I guess you can rebut that Eddie recruited him. Eddie desperately needed a 3 point shooter. He picked one that doesn't want it bad enough to succeed at this level .

what I am putting on Eddie is not doing anything/much to run any plays (double/triple screens, etc), to get the kid any open looks. I can think of only a handful of wide open looks that we got for Goode
meanwhile, every team we play is getting multiple wide open looks for their shooters EACH game
if he got a ton of open looks and missed them, I would agree with your latest post. but by my memory of the entire season, I can only think of a handful of situations where the ball got passed around, ended up with a wide open shot for Goode and he either passed it up, or missed.
Then you missed some games in my humble opinion. Plenty of games early in the year that if Goode hit 1 or 2 threes it could have made a difference. The plays other teams run are screens or double screens with their guy cutting hard and tight to get open. Justin does not move at that speed. Why? I do not know? Even if he is not the quickest guy in the world, he came hide and cut hard around screens but he doesn't. When teams have gone zone the last 6-7 games , because we are scoring against their man to man , we really could use him and he is a no show.

i think we have seen enough of Goode to know his limitations defensively, and there is no doubt that he can't create his own shot. However, I am not yet ready to say he cant be a guy who can come off the bench and make some shots. That may be the ultimate result, but for me, I need to see a much bigger sample set of him failing before I can go there.
Hey I am sure Eddie, the staff, and everyone of the players would like to see him come out of his shell. Ru is last in made 3's in the Big 10 and last in defending it. A recipe for disaster. The last 8 games , the margin differential from 3 is the difference in the final school. I will go check out the box scores but my recollection is 27-33 to 6-9 every game.
correct. and the "little options" is exactly why these guys should have gotten some time a month to 6 weeks ago. Again at a minimum to spell the starters so they didn't wilt in the last 10 mins.
